📚 UCAS Clearing: Another Door to Your Ideal University | UCAS 补录：开往理想学校的另一扇门
For most students, the standard application route is the main path into a UK university. In reality, however, the UK admissions system also contains a clearing stage, much like the supplementary recruitment that follows the Chinese gaokao. For applicants who missed the deadline, or who simply want to change direction, Clearing becomes an excellent alternative door.

1. What Is UCAS Clearing? | 什么是 UCAS 补录？
UCAS Clearing is the annual late-admissions service that runs from early July to late October. During this window, universities publish courses that still hold vacant places, and applicants who hold no offer - or who have not yet applied at all - may contact those universities directly to compete for a place.
UCAS 补录（Clearing）是每年 7 月初至 10 月下旬开放的后期招生服务。在这一窗口期内，大学会公布仍有空位的课程，而没有持有任何录取、或者尚未提出申请的学生，可以直接联系这些大学争取名额。
Clearing is not a "second-class" route. Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL, LSE and dozens of Russell Group universities have all advertised Clearing places in recent cycles, usually for courses where recruitment fell short of target or where offers were declined.

Two features define Clearing: it is course-specific, and it is first-come, first-served. A vacancy can disappear within hours on A-level results day, so speed and preparation matter more than prestige-hunting.

2. Who Should Use Clearing? | 哪些同学适合走补录？
Clearing is designed for applicants who, for whatever reason, are not holding a confirmed place. In practice, six groups of students use it most often.

- Applicants who did not submit a UCAS application before the 30 June deadline - 未在 6 月 30 日截止日前提交 UCAS 申请的学生；

3. Key Dates: The Clearing Calendar | 关键时间节点：补录日历
The Clearing calendar is tight and unforgiving. The table below shows the typical sequence; exact dates should always be checked on the official UCAS website for the current cycle.

The practical lesson is simple: prepare your documents before results day, not on it. Applicants who have their grades, English test scores and personal statement ready at 8 a.m. on results day are the ones who get through on the phone.

4. How Clearing Works: Step by Step | 补录流程分步详解
Clearing is a conversation-driven process. You do not wait for a decision - you initiate contact and negotiate. The sequence below is the standard workflow.
补录是一个由沟通驱动的过程。你不是在等待决定，而是要主动联系并争取。以下顺序是标准工作流程。
- Step 1 - Sign in to UCAS Hub and confirm your Clearing number - 第一步：登录 UCAS Hub，确认你的补录编号（Clearing number）；
- Step 2 - Search live vacancies using subject, region, entry requirement and study mode filters - 第二步：用专业、地区、入学要求和学制筛选实时空位；
- Step 3 - Shortlist 8 to 12 courses and note the admissions phone number for each - 第三步：筛选出 8 至 12 门课程，记下每门课的招生电话；
- Step 4 - Call the universities, starting with your highest priority - 第四步：从最优先的学校开始逐一打电话；
- Step 5 - If the admissions tutor is interested, you will receive a verbal offer, usually valid for 24 to 48 hours - 第五步：如果招生官有意向，你会获得一个口头录取，通常有效期为 24 至 48 小时；
- Step 6 - Go back to UCAS Hub and add the course as your Clearing choice - 第六步：回到 UCAS Hub，把这门课程添加为你的补录志愿；

A crucial rule: you may only add one Clearing choice at a time, and only with the university's agreement. If the university does not confirm, you can remove it and add another. Adding a choice without permission simply wastes a slot.
一条关键规则：同一时间你只能添加一个补录志愿，而且必须获得大学同意。如果大学没有确认，你可以删除后再添加另一个。未经许可就添加，只会白白浪费一个名额。
5. Clearing Plus and the Official Search Tool | Clearing Plus 与官方搜索工具
Since 2020, UCAS has operated Clearing Plus, a matching service that works in the opposite direction to traditional Clearing. Instead of students hunting for courses, the system suggests courses to unplaced applicants based on their grades, subjects and stated preferences.
自 2020 年起，UCAS 推出了 Clearing Plus 匹配服务，其运作方向与传统补录相反。不再是学生去"找"课程，而是系统根据成绩、科目和填报偏好，主动向未获学位的申请人推荐课程。
With Clearing Plus, an applicant sees a personalised list of recommended courses and can press "I am interested". The university then receives the expression of interest and may call the applicant directly.

Clearing Plus does not replace the standard search. The official search remains the most reliable tool because it shows the entry requirements, the number of places, the tuition fee status and whether the course accepts international applicants.

For international applicants, always filter by fee status. A course that looks ideal may be open only to home-fee students, and phoning about it wastes precious time on results day.

6. Entry Requirements and Grade Flexibility | 入学要求与成绩弹性
Clearing entry requirements are usually lower than the standard published offer, often by one or two A-level grades. This flexibility exists because a university would rather fill a seat than leave it empty, but it does not mean there are no standards at all.

7. Clearing in Numbers: Why It Matters | 补录数据：为什么它值得重视
Clearing is a mass-scale operation, not a niche corner of admissions. In 2019, more than 4,700 international students secured UK university places through Clearing, a figure that demonstrates how significant this route is for overseas applicants.

In recent cycles, the total number of applicants placed through Clearing each year has run into the tens of thousands, and several thousand of them hold non-UK fee status. Most of those calls happen in a 48-hour surge around A-level results day.

8. Adjustment and Upgrading: Moving Up, Not Down | 调剂与升级：向上走，而非向下
Historically, UCAS ran a separate process called Adjustment, which allowed applicants who exceeded the conditions of their firm offer to switch to a higher-tariff course. UCAS withdrew the formal Adjustment process from the 2022 cycle onwards.
历史上，UCAS 曾运行一个名为 Adjustment（调剂）的独立流程，允许成绩超出第一志愿条件的学生，转向要求更高的课程。自 2022 年招生周期起，UCAS 取消了正式的 Adjustment 流程。
Today, upgrading is handled through Clearing itself. An applicant who has exceeded their offer can search for a more competitive course and contact the university directly, exactly as in normal Clearing.
