📚 Chapter 17 Worksheet: Product and Price |

This worksheet covers Cambridge A-Level Business Chapter 17, focusing on two core elements of the marketing mix: product and price. You will learn how product decisions, branding, the product life cycle, product portfolio analysis and pricing strategies connect to business objectives, market structure and competitive behaviour.

The material is organised so that each section can be used as a stand-alone revision task or as part of a full chapter review. Definitions come first, then applied examples, then evaluation points that match the assessment objectives AO1 to AO4 used by Cambridge examiners.

1. The Marketing Mix: 4Ps and 7Ps | 营销组合:从4P到7P

The marketing mix is the set of controllable tactical tools a business uses to influence demand and satisfy its target market. The traditional 4Ps are product, price, place and promotion. Cambridge examiners expect you to treat these elements as an integrated mix rather than four separate decisions.

Service businesses often extend this to the 7Ps by adding people, process and physical evidence. These extra Ps matter because services are intangible, inseparable, variable and perishable, so staff behaviour and service design become part of the product itself.

Product and price are the two Ps examined in this chapter. Product decisions create the offer; pricing decisions capture value from that offer. If a business positions a product as premium but prices it at the bottom of the market, the mix becomes inconsistent and the brand loses credibility.

ElementCore decision
ProductFeatures, quality, design, brand, range, packaging
PriceLevel, strategy, discounts, credit terms
PlaceChannels, retailers, online versus physical
PromotionAdvertising, sales promotion, PR, direct marketing

2. Product: Core, Actual and Augmented Benefits |

A product is anything offered to a market to satisfy a need or want. Marketers analyse it at three levels: the core benefit, the actual product, and the augmented product. The core benefit answers the question 'what is the customer really buying?'.

The actual product is the tangible offer: quality level, features, design, packaging and brand name. The augmented product adds non-physical benefits such as warranty, delivery, installation, training, credit terms and after-sales service. Augmented benefits are often the easiest way to differentiate in a crowded market.

Product differentiation can come from tangible features or intangible branding. Effective differentiation reduces the price elasticity of demand, allowing a business to charge higher prices, build customer loyalty and earn higher margins than undifferentiated rivals.

3. Branding and Brand Loyalty |

A brand is a name, term, sign, symbol or design, or a combination of these, that identifies the goods or services of one seller and differentiates them from competitors. A successful brand adds value beyond the physical product, which is why it can be treated as an intangible asset on the balance sheet.

Branding benefits the business through premium pricing, repeat purchase, customer loyalty, easier new product launch, brand extension, stronger bargaining power with retailers, and reduced price elasticity of demand. It also raises costs, because advertising, design, packaging and legal protection all require ongoing spending.

Branding also benefits consumers: it signals consistent quality, reduces search and purchase risk, and can provide status or identity. The main risks are brand dilution through over-extension, damage from a single product failure, and the rising power of retailer own-label brands.

4. Product Positioning and Differentiation |

Positioning is the place a product occupies in the minds of target customers relative to competing products. It is usually shown on a positioning (perceptual) map with two axes, for example price against perceived quality, or traditional against modern styling.

A unique selling point (USP) is a feature that competitors do not offer and that customers value. Differentiation may be based on physical features, service quality, staff expertise, location, delivery speed, or image and brand personality.

Evaluation matters here: differentiation raises costs, and successful features are quickly copied. Over-differentiation may also confuse customers or push the price above what the target segment is willing to pay, so the benefit must justify the premium.

5. The Product Life Cycle |

The product life cycle (PLC) describes the stages a product passes through: development, introduction, growth, maturity and decline. Sales and profits follow different patterns, which means the marketing mix must be adjusted at each stage.

StageSales and profitTypical pricing
IntroductionLow sales, negative profit because of launch costsSkimming or penetration
GrowthRapidly rising sales, profit peaks for early moversCompetitive, gradual reduction
MaturitySales peak and flatten, price competition squeezes marginsDiscounts, promotional pricing
DeclineFalling sales, falling profit, possible lossesPrice cuts to clear stock

In introduction, costs are high because of research and development, tooling and launch promotion, and demand is inelastic. In growth, competitors enter, distribution widens and unit costs fall through economies of scale, so price can be reduced without destroying profit.

Maturity usually lasts longest and generates the cash that funds new products. In decline, the business must decide whether to harvest the product, extend it, sell the brand, or withdraw and redeploy resources. The PLC is a model, not a law: some products skip stages and others stay in maturity for decades.

6. Extension Strategies |

When a product approaches maturity or decline, a business can apply extension strategies to delay withdrawal. Common approaches include finding new market segments, entering new geographic markets, targeting new uses, reformulating or repackaging, rebranding, and launching a line extension.

Pricing and promotion are also extension tools. A price reduction can revive volume among price-sensitive buyers, while a fresh advertising campaign, sponsorship or loyalty scheme can reposition a mature product as younger or more premium.

Evaluation: extension is usually cheaper than developing a new product and exploits existing brand equity, but it may merely delay the inevitable, dilute the brand, and consume funds that could support genuine innovation. Rivals may also imitate the repositioned product quickly.

7. Product Portfolio Analysis: The Boston Matrix |

The Boston Matrix, or growth-share matrix, plots each product in a portfolio against market growth rate (high or low) and relative market share (high or low), producing four categories: stars, cash cows, question marks and dogs.

The resulting strategies are build, hold, harvest and divest. A balanced portfolio contains cash cows that fund stars and selected question marks, so that the business always has products at different stages of the life cycle.

Limitations should be evaluated: the model uses only two variables, ignores synergy and cash flow timing, depends on how the market is defined, and gives a static snapshot. A low-share product in a slow market may still be profitable in a niche.

8. New Product Development |

New product development (NPD) follows a sequence: idea generation, screening, concept testing, business analysis, product development, test marketing and commercialisation. Each stage is a filter designed to stop weak ideas before they consume large budgets.

Firms develop new products because every product eventually matures, because competitors innovate, because technology and consumer tastes change, and because NPD can spread risk across a wider portfolio and raise barriers to entry.

Risks are substantial. Failure rates for new consumer products are high, development is expensive and slow, cannibalisation may damage existing sales, and a first mover gains early brand loyalty but also bears the education costs that followers avoid.

9. Pricing Objectives and Influences |

Pricing objectives must follow from the overall business objectives. Typical objectives include profit maximisation, sales revenue maximisation, market share growth, survival, maintaining a quality or prestige image, price stability, target return on investment, and ethical or social aims.

Internal influences on price include costs of production, the firm's objectives, the consistency of the marketing mix, spare capacity and the strength of the brand. External influences include demand and price elasticity, competitor prices and reactions, the stage of the product life cycle, the length of the distribution channel, government policy and taxation, and general economic conditions.

Price elasticity of demand = %Δ quantity demanded ÷ %Δ price

If demand is elastic (the value is greater than 1 in absolute terms), a price cut raises total revenue. If demand is inelastic (less than 1), a price rise raises total revenue. Differentiation, branding and habit all make demand less elastic.

10. Cost-Based and Market-Based Pricing |

Cost-plus pricing adds a standard mark-up to average unit cost. It is simple, easy to justify to customers and guarantees a margin if costs are estimated correctly, but it ignores demand, competitor prices and perceived value.

Mark-up price = unit cost × (1 + mark-up %)

Marginal cost or contribution pricing sets price above variable cost so that each sale contributes to fixed costs and profit. It is useful when spare capacity exists or in a competitive tender, but it can trigger a price war and may signal low quality.

Contribution per unit = selling price − variable cost per unit

Market-based methods start from the customer and the competition. These include competitive pricing, going-rate pricing, loss leader pricing to attract footfall, limit pricing to deter entry, and predatory pricing, which is normally illegal if it aims to eliminate rivals.

11. Strategic Pricing Methods |

Price skimming sets a high launch price and lowers it over time. It suits innovative, technology-led products with an inelastic early demand curve, allows rapid recovery of research and
