📚 IGCSE AQA Business: Business Growth – Key Exam Points | IGCSE AQA
Business growth is a central topic in the IGCSE AQA Business syllabus. It explains how enterprises expand in size, the reasons behind their growth ambitions, the methods available, and the benefits and drawbacks of becoming larger. A strong grasp of business growth enables students to evaluate corporate strategies and real-world case studies effectively.
1. What is Business Growth? |
Business growth means the expansion of a firm's size. It is commonly measured by increases in sales turnover, number of employees, market share, number of outlets, or total asset value. Growth can be gradual or rapid, and can take place through internal or external channels.
A business might grow to outperform competitors, satisfy shareholder demands, or simply to stay relevant in a dynamic market. Regardless of the motive, growth changes the structure and strategy of the organisation.
2. Why Do Businesses Want to Grow? |
Businesses pursue expansion for several interconnected reasons. First, growth can boost total profits – even if profit margins remain the same, selling more units can raise overall earnings.
Second, larger firms are often able to benefit from economies of scale, which reduce the average cost of production and strengthen competitiveness.
Third, increased size brings greater market power, allowing a business to negotiate better terms with suppliers and influence market prices.
Fourth, growth helps spread risk through diversification into new products or markets. Finally, managers may pursue growth for personal objectives such as higher salaries, prestige, or job security.
3. Internal (Organic) Growth |
Internal growth, also called organic growth, occurs when a business expands by using its own resources. Common methods include opening new branches, increasing factory capacity, launching new product lines, and selling through franchised outlets.
One major advantage of organic growth is that it relies on the firm's existing expertise and brand strength, which keeps risk relatively low.
It also allows management to retain full control and avoid the culture clashes and integration costs often associated with takeovers. However, organic growth can be slow, and a business may miss emerging opportunities while waiting for internal expansion to bear fruit.
For example, a bakery that uses retained profits to open a second shop in a neighbouring town is growing organically.
4. External Growth: Mergers and Acquisitions |
External growth takes place when a firm expands by combining with, or purchasing, another business. A merger is an agreement where two companies join to form an entirely new entity. An acquisition (or takeover) happens when one company buys another – this can be welcomed (friendly) or resisted (hostile).
External growth is faster than organic growth and provides immediate access to new customer bases, technologies, and distribution networks. It can also remove a competitor from the market overnight.
Nevertheless, mergers and acquisitions carry risks: the combined workforce may clash, key employees might leave, and the purchase price could be overvalued, leading to disappointing returns.
5. Types of Integration |
Integration is categorised according to the relationship between the firms. The following table gives an overview. After the table, each type is explained in more detail with its strategic advantages.
| Type of Integration | Description | Example |
| Horizontal | Same industry and same stage of production. | Two car manufacturers merge. |
| Backward vertical | Firm buys a supplier (moving back towards raw materials). | A bakery acquiring a flour mill. |
| Forward vertical | Firm buys a customer (moving forward towards the final consumer). | A flour mill opening its own bakeries. |
| Conglomerate (diversification) | Firms in completely different industries combine. | A mobile phone company buying a fashion brand. |
Horizontal integration combines competitors at the same production stage. It increases market share, reduces competition, and can yield substantial economies of scale. However, it may attract intervention from competition authorities if a monopoly appears likely.
Backward vertical integration secures supply and can lower input costs by cutting out the supplier's profit margin. Forward vertical integration ensures control over retail outlets and brings the firm closer to the end consumer, improving market intelligence.
Conglomerate integration spreads risk across unrelated markets. If one sector struggles, another may perform well. The downside is that management may lack expertise in the new field, diluting focus.
6. Economies of Scale |
Economies of scale describe the fall in average costs as a firm increases output. The relationship can be shown as:
Average Cost = Total Cost ÷ Output
As output rises, total cost is spread over more units, so average cost falls – provided the firm operates efficiently. Internal economies arise from the firm's own growth; external economies come from the expansion of the whole industry.
Technical economies: large businesses can afford specialised machinery and mass production lines, cutting unit costs.
Purchasing economies: buying raw materials in bulk brings discounts and reduces the cost per unit.
Managerial economics: large firms can employ specialist managers for each function, improving decision-making and efficiency.
Financial economies: banks often consider large firms as lower risk, so they can borrow at lower interest rates.
Marketing economies: the cost of an advertising campaign is spread over a huge volume of sales.
Risk‑bearing economies: a diversified large firm can absorb failures in one product line while continuing to profit from others.
External economies arise when the industry as a whole grows, leading to a better pool of skilled labour, improved infrastructure, and specialised suppliers that benefit every firm in the sector.
7. Diseconomies of Scale |
Diseconomies of scale occur when a business becomes so large that average costs start to rise. The firm moves beyond its optimal scale, and inefficiencies appear.
Communication problems: in a very large organisation, messages can be distorted across multiple layers of management, slowing decision‑making.
Coordination difficulties: running hundreds of branches or factories makes coordination extremely complex, leading to delays and duplicated work.
Poor motivation: employees may feel like a small, unimportant part of a giant machine, reducing their morale and productivity.
Bureaucracy: formal rules and paperwork multiply, making the business less flexible and responsive to market changes.
External diseconomies can also affect large firms – for instance, when an industry becomes clustered, traffic congestion raises transport costs and competition for local labour pushes up wages.
8. Financing Growth |
All growth requires funding. Businesses can use internal or external sources, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.
Internal finance includes retained profits and the sale of unwanted assets. Retained profit is cost‑effective because no interest is paid and ownership is not diluted. However, the amount available may be limited, and using too much retained profit can leave no buffer for emergencies.
External finance includes bank loans, overdrafts, issuing new shares, venture capital, and leasing. Loans and share issues can raise large sums quickly, but loans charge interest and must be repaid, while selling shares may reduce the original owners' control. Venture capitalists often demand a significant stake and input into decisions.
A growing firm must carefully match its choice of finance to the purpose and duration of the growth project. For example
