📚 External Influences on Business Activity |

Businesses do not operate in a vacuum. Managers must constantly monitor the external environment because changes in economic conditions, government policy, law, technology, society and international markets can alter costs, demand, competition and strategic choices. This article examines the main external influences covered in Cambridge A Level Business and explains how firms can analyse and respond to them.

1. Understanding External Influences |

External influences are factors outside a firm's control that can affect its performance. They are often grouped into political, economic, social, technological, legal, environmental and ethical categories, known as PESTLE. Unlike internal decisions, managers cannot directly control these forces; they can only anticipate, adapt and influence them to a limited extent.

The distinction between external and internal influences matters for strategic planning. Internal factors such as finance, operations and human resources can be managed directly, while external factors require scanning, forecasting and contingency planning. A firm that ignores external change risks losing market share or facing regulatory penalties.

2. Economic Environment: GDP, Inflation and Unemployment | 经济环境:GDP、通胀与失业

Gross domestic product (GDP) measures the total value of goods and services produced in an economy. When GDP grows, household incomes tend to rise, boosting demand for normal goods and services. During a recession, GDP falls, consumer confidence weakens, and businesses may face falling sales, excess capacity and pressure to cut costs.

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level. High inflation increases input costs such as raw materials and wages, squeezing profit margins. It also creates uncertainty, making long-term investment planning difficult. Deflation, or falling prices, can be equally damaging because consumers delay purchases and real debt burdens rise.
