📚 Blood Vessels: Structure, Function and Adaptations |
Blood vessels are the living tubes that carry blood between the heart and every tissue in the body. Their structure is closely matched to their role, because arteries must withstand high pressure, capillaries must allow rapid exchange, and veins must return blood at low pressure without backflow. Understanding these adaptations is a core part of the Cambridge International A Level Biology course, and it links directly to topics such as the cardiac cycle, gas exchange, tissue fluid formation and thermoregulation.
1. Overview of Blood Vessel Types |
In a closed circulatory system, blood remains inside vessels throughout its journey. In humans the circuit contains five main types of vessel: arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins, arranged in a continuous loop.
Blood flows from the heart into arteries, then into smaller arterioles, through capillary beds where exchange occurs, and finally into venules and veins that return blood to the heart.
This arrangement means each vessel type encounters different pressures and flow rates, and its wall structure reflects those conditions.
Examiners frequently test this idea as a structure-to-function question, so it is worth learning each vessel type as a pair: the feature, and the advantage that feature gives.
2. The Three Layers of a Blood Vessel Wall |
Most vessels larger than a capillary share a common three-layer plan, although the thickness of each layer varies enormously between vessel types.
The inner layer, or endothelium, is a single layer of flattened squamous endothelial cells with a very smooth surface. It reduces friction, helps prevent clotting, and in capillaries it is the only layer present.
The middle layer, or tunica media, contains smooth muscle and elastic fibres. Its thickness determines how far the vessel can stretch and how much its diameter can be changed by contraction.
The outer layer, or tunica externa, is mainly collagen-rich connective tissue. Collagen has a high tensile strength, so it prevents the vessel from over-stretching or bursting under pressure.
Taken together, these three layers give the wall its strength, its elasticity and its ability to change diameter - the three properties that explain almost every adaptation described in this article.
3. Arteries: Structure and Function |
Arteries carry blood away from the heart at high pressure. The aorta receives blood directly from the left ventricle during systole, and the pulmonary arteries receive it from the right ventricle, so both must cope with the full force of ventricular contraction.
Their walls are therefore thick, strong and elastic, with a large amount of elastic fibre and smooth muscle in the middle layer.
Elastic fibres allow the artery to stretch when the heart pumps and to recoil when the heart relaxes. This keeps blood pressure relatively steady and maintains flow even between heartbeats.
A thick wall also means a relatively narrow lumen, which helps to maintain the high pressure generated by the heart.
The endothelium is folded in large arteries, allowing further expansion, and it is smooth enough to keep friction low so that blood flows rapidly without turbulence.
4. Arterioles and the Control of Blood Flow |
Arterioles are the smallest arteries, and they contain a high proportion of smooth muscle relative to their diameter.
Because this muscle can contract or relax, arterioles act as taps that control how much blood enters each capillary bed.
Contraction, called vasoconstriction, narrows the lumen and reduces flow to that tissue. Relaxation, called vasodilation, widens the lumen and increases flow.
Arterioles are also the main site of resistance to blood flow, so they are largely responsible for the sharp fall in blood pressure that occurs between the arteries and the capillaries.
This makes arterioles the key control point of the circulation: the heart sets the overall output, but arterioles decide where that output actually goes.
5. Capillaries: Structure and Function |
Capillaries are the smallest vessels, typically about 5-10 μm in diameter - not much wider than a single red blood cell.
Their wall is a single layer of endothelial cells, often only one cell thick, so the diffusion distance between blood and tissue fluid is extremely short.
Capillaries are so numerous that their total cross-sectional area is far greater than that of the aorta, which is why blood flows most slowly in capillary beds.
They penetrate almost every tissue, forming dense networks called capillary beds, so no cell in the body lies far from a capillary.
The wall is also highly permeable: it is only one cell thick and has pores between cells, allowing water, gases, glucose, amino acids and ions to pass, while plasma proteins and blood cells are normally retained.
