Before you buy anything, download the current 9709 syllabus from the Cambridge International website and read the statistics sections line by line. Probability & Statistics 1 (Paper 5) covers representation of data (stem-and-leaf diagrams, box-and-whisker plots, histograms with unequal class widths, cumulative frequency graphs), measures of location and spread including coding, probability (mutually exclusive and independent events, conditional probability, tree and Venn diagrams), permutations and combinations, discrete random variables with E(X) and Var(X), the binomial distribution, the geometric distribution, and the normal distribution including standardisation. Probability & Statistics 2 (Paper 6) covers the Poisson distribution, linear combinations of random variables, continuous random variables and probability density functions, sampling and estimation, hypothesis tests, and chi-squared tests.

Each of Papers 5 and 6 lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and carries 50 marks; in the full A Level a candidate takes two applied papers, each contributing about 20% of the final grade. Papers exist in regional variants (51/52/53 and 61/62/63), but the syllabus content is identical, so papers from every variant are fair game for practice. Note what is not examined: the t-distribution, correlation and regression, and analysis of variance are outside 9709, so do not spend weeks on them.

You need one endorsed coursebook per paper plus one practice book. The Cambridge University Press series (the Probability & Statistics 1 and 2 Coursebooks published for the 9709 syllabus) follows the syllabus order exactly and contains plenty of exam-style questions with worked solutions. The Hodder Education series by Sophie Goldie is an equally solid alternative, with slightly more explanation and a gentler ramp into harder questions. Buy one series only; owning three textbooks is a common and expensive mistake.

For extra practice, a classic reference such as A Concise Course in Advanced Level Statistics by Crawshaw and Chambers is excellent for deepening understanding of distributions and estimation, even though its chapter order does not match 9709. Official Cambridge materials are free and non-negotiable: the syllabus, the specimen papers, the past papers with mark schemes, the examiner reports, and the grade thresholds for recent sessions. Set up a single folder per paper and store the syllabus and the formula booklet there from day one.
