📚 Case Study Analysis in A-Level CAIE Physical Education | A-Level CAIE
Case study questions in CAIE A-Level Physical Education (9396) are designed to move you beyond textbook recall. A typical question presents a short sporting scenario, such as a swimmer preparing for a 200 m freestyle final or a basketball player experiencing pre-match anxiety, and asks you to identify, apply, justify and evaluate relevant theory. Strong answers treat the scenario as evidence, not as decoration.
CAIE A-Level
1. What a Case Study Question Really Asks |
In CAIE PE, case studies are not essays about everything you know. Examiners give credit for selecting the most relevant concepts and linking them directly to details in the stimulus. If the scenario mentions an athlete losing accuracy in the final minutes of a netball match, you should immediately connect this to fatigue, attentional narrowing and the autonomic nervous system rather than describing all psychological theories.
A case study therefore tests three things at once: your subject knowledge, your ability to select from that knowledge, and your ability to justify the selection with reference to the scenario. That is why a short, precise answer that quotes the stimulus usually scores higher than a long, generic one.
2. Command Words and Assessment Objectives |
Every case study is built from command words, and each command word maps onto an assessment objective. 'State' and 'identify' test AO1 knowledge; 'explain' and 'apply' test AO2 application; 'analyse', 'justify' and 'evaluate' test AO3 analysis and evaluation. Misreading the command word is the single most common cause of lost marks.
| Command word | 指令词 | What the examiner wants | 考官想要什么 | Typical mark | 典型分值 |
| Identify / State | One correct term or fact, no explanation needed |
| Describe | Accurate detail about a process or structure |
| Explain / Apply | Cause-and-effect link to the scenario |
| Justify / Evaluate | Weigh alternatives and reach a supported judgement |
3. Decoding the Stimulus |
Read the scenario twice before writing anything. On the first read, underline every concrete detail: the sport, the level, the time of day, the scoreline, the athlete's words, the coach's behaviour. On the second read, label each detail with the syllabus area it belongs to - physiology, biomechanics, skill acquisition, psychology, or socio-cultural.
A worked example: "A 17-year-old swimmer is preparing for a 200 m freestyle final. She reports feeling sick before the race and her split times show a fast first 50 m followed by a fade." The details 'feeling sick' and 'fast start then fade' are both evidence, and they pull in opposite directions - one points to cognitive anxiety, the other to an inefficient energy system distribution. Top answers handle both.
4. Anatomy and Physiology Case Studies |
Physiology scenarios almost always involve a demand being placed on a system. The examiner wants you to name the system, describe its acute response, and then explain how that response limits or supports performance in this specific situation.
For the swimmer above, a strong chain runs like this: the 200 m freestyle is predominantly anaerobic, relying on the ATP-PC system for the first 10 s and the lactic acid system up to roughly 60-90 s. An excessively fast first 50 m accelerates phosphocreatine depletion and lactate accumulation, which lowers intramuscular pH and inhibits glycolytic enzymes. The result is a drop in force production and the observed fade in the third and fourth lengths.
ATP + H₂O → ADP + Pi + energy | Glucose → 2 pyruvate → 2 lactate + H⁺
Note the level of precision expected: naming 'lactic acid' alone is a one-mark answer; linking lactate accumulation to enzyme inhibition and then to the timing of the fade is what earns the application and analysis marks.
5. Skill Acquisition Case Studies |
Skill acquisition scenarios usually show a performer's behaviour changing over time, or responding to feedback, practice design or coaching instruction. Look for keywords such as 'new to the sport', 'after six weeks of practice', 'the coach demonstrates' or 'the player looks at the ball rather than the target'.
If the scenario says a basketball player is learning a set shot and consistently misses to the left, the relevant framework is the three stages of learning combined with feedback. An associative-stage performer has developed some consistency but still relies heavily on external feedback, so the coach should provide knowledge of results rather than overwhelming the player with internal cues.
Open and closed skills also matter here. A set shot is a closed skill performed in a predictable environment; a pass in a netball match is open and unpredictable. The same athlete needs different practice conditions - massed and fixed practice for the closed skill, variable and distributed practice for the open one.
6. Sport Psychology Case Studies |
Psychology is the most commonly examined case study area because it is easy to embed in a narrative. The scenario might describe pre-match anxiety, a loss of concentration, a drop in motivation or a conflict within a team. Your job is to name the construct, apply a model, then judge whether the intervention described would actually work.
Take the basketball player with pre-match anxiety. A complete answer distinguishes cognitive anxiety (worry about failure, negative self-talk) from somatic anxiety (raised heart rate, sweating, muscle tension) and locates both in the autonomic nervous system, where the sympathetic branch triggers the fight-or-flight response.
Sympathetic: ↑ heart rate, ↑ ventilation, ↑ adrenaline | Parasympathetic: ↓ heart rate, digestion resumes
You should then evaluate, not just describe. Inverted-U theory would predict that a moderate arousal level benefits this player, but the individual optimal arousal level varies with task complexity, personality and experience, so the coach's decision to use a relaxation technique is defensible only if the player is over-aroused rather than under-aroused.
7. Biomechanics Case Studies |
Biomechanics scenarios ask you to explain movement efficiency or injury risk in terms of forces and levers. Typical triggers are 'the athlete leans forward too far', 'the thrower's elbow is injured' or 'the centre of mass is outside the base of support'.
If a scenario states that a long jumper fails to achieve height at take-off, the answer sits in projectile motion and the angle of release. For a given speed of release, the optimal angle in the presence of air resistance is slightly less than the theoretical 45°, and the jumper's approach speed must be traded against the vertical impulse available from the take-off leg.
Three mechanical principles are worth memorising because they recur across sports: Newton's three laws, the principle of levers (first, second and third class, with the third class being most common in the human body), and the factors affecting stability - base of support, centre of mass height, and the position of the line of gravity.
8. Socio-Cultural Case Studies |
Socio-cultural scenarios often feel easier than physiology but are frequently answered superficially. A scenario about a female footballer whose matches receive less television coverage than the men's team is not asking whether this is fair; it is asking you to analyse the commercial, historical and media mechanisms that produce the disparity.
Strong answers bring in specific evidence: commercial investment and sponsorship follow viewing figures, viewing figures are shaped by decades of media scheduling, and governing bodies have only recently begun to mandate equal coverage. Use of the terms 'socialisation', 'social stratification', 'commercialisation' and 'globalisation' should be precise, not decorative.
9. Linking Theory to Evidence |
Marks are lost when theory and scenario run in parallel without touching. Every application sentence should contain both a theoretical term and a specific detail from the stimulus. Useful link phrases include 'this is evident because', 'in this case', 'the scenario states that', and 'which explains why'.
有用的连接句式包括 "this is evident because""in this case""the scenario states that""which explains why"。
| The player is anxious. Anxiety reduces performance. | The player reports feeling sick before the final, indicating somatic anxiety driven by the sympathetic nervous system; this over-arousal is above her individual optimum and explains the fast start and subsequent fade. |
10. Building Evaluation and Judgement |
Evaluation in CAIE PE means weighing strengths against limitations and reaching a conclusion. A reliable structure is: state the claim, give supporting evidence from the scenario, present a counter-argument, then deliver a final judgement that is qualified rather than absolute.
Because you cannot run a controlled experiment on the athlete in the scenario, longitudinal evidence has to be treated cautiously. A study showing that relaxation training improved performance in one squad does not prove it will work for this individual, and saying so explicitly earns analysis marks rather than costing them.
11. Common Mark-Losing Mistakes |
The most frequent error is answering a question that was not asked - for example, describing the entire energy system when the question asked only about the effect of a fast start. The second is failing to use the stimulus at all, which caps the answer at AO1 knowledge.
Other repeated errors: quoting a theory without naming it, using 'because' without a mechanism, writing one long paragraph with no structure, and ignoring the second half of a two-part question. If a question says 'and evaluate', the evaluation is not optional.
12. Timing, Structure and Self-Marking |
Allocate roughly one minute per mark, plus one minute for planning. A five-mark case study therefore deserves six minutes: one to underline the stimulus, four to write, one to check that every point links back to the scenario. Numbering your points makes it easier for the examiner to award marks and easier for you to spot a missing link.
For self-marking, use the official mark scheme and ask three questions of each answer: is the terminology correct, is the application specific to this scenario, and is there a supported judgement? Answering 'no' to any of the three tells you exactly what to fix next time.
Finally, build a personal bank of scenarios. Take one real sporting moment each week - a penalty shoot-out, a marathon finish, a rugby substitution - and write a 6-mark case study response on it. Over a term this gives you a repertoire of evidence far broader than any textbook.
