1. Understanding the CAIE Geography Assessment Structure | 了解 CAIE 地理考试结构
CAIE A-Level Geography (syllabus 9696) typically comprises four papers. Papers 1 and 2 are AS papers covering core physical and core human geography, while Papers 3 and 4 are A2 papers requiring advanced physical and human geography. Each paper includes a mix of data response, structured questions, and extended writing.
Paper 1 and Paper 2 often contain short data response questions plus one extended response. Papers 3 and 4 place greater weight on essay-style answers, evaluation, and the ability to link topics across the specification. Always check the latest syllabus for the exact section and mark allocation.
2. Command Words and What They Require |
Command words tell you the exact skill the examiner expects. 'Describe' requires stating what something is like; 'explain' requires giving reasons; 'assess' and 'evaluate' require making a judgement about importance, success, or impact.
The table below summarises common command words in CAIE Geography and the depth expected.

3. How Examiners Use Level Descriptors |
Most extended questions in CAIE Geography are marked using levels of response rather than simple point marking. A Level 1 answer may show knowledge but little structure; a Level 2 answer applies knowledge to the question; a Level 3 or 4 answer demonstrates analysis, evaluation, and place-specific evidence.
Examiners look for three broad qualities: knowledge and understanding (AO1), application and analysis (AO2), and evaluation and synthesis (AO3). To reach higher levels, you must move from describing content to answering the exact question set.
Understanding the level descriptors helps you avoid the common mistake of writing everything you know. The examiner rewards relevance, structure, and quality of argument, not simply length.
4. Tackling 4-6 Mark Data Response Questions |
For short data response questions, each mark often corresponds to a separate point or stage of explanation. Use the Point, Evidence, Explanation (PEE) structure: make a point, support it with data from the resource, then explain why it matters.
