📚 A-Level CAIE Psychology: Complete Syllabus Breakdown | A-Level CAIE
Cambridge International A-Level Psychology (9990) gives learners a structured introduction to the scientific study of mind and behaviour. The syllabus is built around four core approaches, research methodology, key issues and debates, and a choice of specialist options that apply psychology to real-world settings. It is a linear qualification, so the AS content is examined at the end of the first year and the full A Level at the end of the second, with no modular re-sits in between.
1. Course Overview and Aims |
The course aims to develop both knowledge of psychological concepts and the ability to evaluate theories and research evidence. Learners are encouraged to think critically, design simple investigations, and recognise the ethical and cultural dimensions of psychology.
More specifically, the syllabus asks candidates to: understand and apply psychological theories, concepts and methods; analyse and evaluate studies rather than simply memorise them; plan and justify their own small-scale investigations; and communicate arguments using appropriate terminology and evidence.
- AO1 Knowledge and understanding of psychological concepts, theories and studies.
- AO2 Application of psychological knowledge to familiar and unfamiliar scenarios.
- AO3 Analysis and evaluation of theories, studies, methods and evidence.
2. Syllabus Structure and Assessment |
The specification is linear and covers AS and A Level content over two years. AS candidates sit two papers; A Level candidates sit four. Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes and worth 60 marks, and at A Level the four papers carry equal weight, so no single paper can be neglected during revision.
| Paper | Content | Level | Marks |
| Paper 1 | Approaches, Issues and Debates | AS + A Level | 60 |
| Paper 2 | Research Methods | AS + A Level | 60 |
| Paper 3 | Specialist Options (Theory) | A Level only | 60 |
| Paper 4 | Specialist Options (Application) | A Level only | 60 |
Paper 1 uses short structured questions on the approaches and on issues and debates. Paper 2 is scenario-based: candidates read a description of a study and answer methodological questions, including a design question. Papers 3 and 4 examine two chosen specialist options, with Paper 4 focusing on applied, novel scenarios.
It provides a foundation for university study in psychology, sociology, education, criminology, nursing, marketing and other social-science or health-related degrees, and it develops transferable skills in data interpretation and argumentation.
3. The Four Core Approaches |
The syllabus is organised around four approaches: biological, cognitive, learning and social. Each approach has its own assumptions, typical methods, classic studies and strengths and weaknesses, and exam questions frequently ask candidates to compare one approach with another.
- Biological: behaviour explained through genes, hormones, neurotransmitters and brain structure; methods include brain scanning, twin studies and animal research.
- Cognitive: behaviour explained through internal mental processes such as memory, attention and schemas; methods include laboratory experiments and case studies of brain injury.
- Learning: behaviour explained through conditioning, reinforcement, observation and imitation; methods include laboratory and natural experiments.
- Social: behaviour explained through the influence of others, groups, norms and situations; methods include field experiments and observations.
A strong answer does not just describe an approach; it uses evidence from named studies and evaluates the methodology that produced that evidence.
4. Research Methodology |
Research methods is examined on Paper 2 and is also embedded throughout the other papers, because every study discussed in class has a method that can be criticised. Candidates must be able to design, describe, justify and evaluate investigations.
- Experiments: laboratory, field, natural and quasi-experiments; independent measures, repeated measures and matched pairs.
- Self-reports: questionnaires, structured and unstructured interviews, rating scales.
- Observations: naturalistic, controlled, participant and non-participant, overt and covert.
- Correlational studies, case studies, longitudinal and cross-sectional designs.
- Sampling: random, opportunity, volunteer, systematic and stratified.
- Data: nominal, ordinal and interval; primary and secondary.
Descriptive statistics must be calculated and interpreted. The mean, median and mode describe central tendency, while the range and standard deviation describe dispersion:
mean: x̄ = Σx ÷ n | standard deviation: s = √( Σ(x − x̄)² ÷ (n − 1) )
Ethical guidelines run through the whole paper: informed consent, deception, protection from harm, confidentiality, privacy, right to withdraw, and the use of animals. Reliability (consistency) and validity (measuring what is claimed) must be distinguished clearly, since examiners award marks for using these terms precisely rather than loosely.
5. Key Issues and Debates |
Issues and debates provide the evaluative backbone of the course. They are not a separate topic to memorise in isolation; they are the lens through which theories and studies are judged on Paper 1 and again in the specialist options.
- Nature versus nurture: is behaviour caused by biology, by experience, or by an interaction?
- Free will versus determinism: can people choose, or is behaviour caused?
- Reductionism versus holism: should behaviour be broken into parts or studied as a whole?
- Individual versus situational explanations of behaviour.
- Cultural bias: do findings generalise beyond Western, educated samples?
- Ethical costs of research versus scientific benefits.
- Social control and the application of psychology to everyday life.
- Is psychology a science? Consider objectivity, replicability and falsifiability.
In the exam, these debates should be used actively: 'This study is reductionist because it explains memory purely in terms of one brain region, which means it may underestimate the role of social context' is far stronger than simply naming the debate.
6. Specialist Options |
At A Level, candidates study two specialist options in depth. Each option applies the four approaches to a real-world domain, and exam questions may require candidates to draw on any relevant approach rather than only the most obvious one.
| Option | Typical content |
| Psychology and Abnormality | Definitions of abnormality, classification and diagnosis, explanations and treatments of disorders such as depression and schizophrenia. |
| Psychology and Consumer Behaviour | Persuasion, advertising, shopping behaviour, brand loyalty, the influence of music and packaging. |
| Psychology and Health | Stress and illness, doctor-patient communication, adherence to treatment, health promotion and pain. |
| Psychology and Organisations | Leadership, motivation, group decision making, job satisfaction, work-related stress and selection. |
The option list is set by Cambridge and has historically included the four areas above; candidates should always confirm the current list in the version of the syllabus they are sitting, since options can be reviewed between syllabus cycles.
Paper 4 makes this section harder than Paper 3. It presents unfamiliar applied scenarios, such as designing an intervention for a hospital, and expects candidates to select and justify psychological ideas rather than simply recite a chapter.
7. Named Studies and Their Role |
The course is evidence-based, so named studies appear inside each approach and each option. They are the raw material for AO2 and AO3 questions, and candidates are expected to know aims, procedures, findings and conclusions accurately.
- Biological: Sperry's split-brain work, Maguire's taxi-driver study, twin studies of intelligence, animal studies of attachment.
- Cognitive: Loftus and Palmer on eyewitness memory, Bartlett on reconstructive memory, case studies of amnesia.
- Learning: Pavlov and Skinner on conditioning, Bandura on observational learning and aggression, Watson and Rayner on conditioned fear.
- Social: Milgram on obedience, Zimbardo's prison study, Asch on conformity, Piliavin on bystander behaviour.
For each study, prepare a four-part card: methodology, results, conclusions and evaluation (ethics, validity, reliability, sample, culture, usefulness). This one habit answers a large proportion of exam questions.
8. AS Level: The First Year | 第一年:AS 阶段
The AS year establishes the foundations. Candidates meet the four approaches, learn the vocabulary of research methods, and begin to write evaluative answers rather than descriptive ones.
- Term 1: biological and cognitive approaches, with their key studies and applications.
- Term 2: learning and social approaches, plus the main issues and debates.
- Term 3: research methods in depth (design, sampling, ethics, data, statistics) and past-paper practice.
AS grades do not automatically carry forward into the A Level result under a linear structure, but the content does: everything learned in year one can be examined in the final Paper 1 and Paper 2. A weak first year cannot be repaired by last-minute revision alone.
9. A Level: The Second Year | 第二年:A Level 阶段
In the second year the emphasis shifts from breadth to depth. Candidates consolidate the four approaches, strengthen their handling of issues and debates, and study two specialist options for Papers 3 and 4.
A useful second-year routine is to build an 'options matrix' that maps each option against the four approaches. Many strong Paper 4 answers gain marks precisely by bringing an unexpected approach to an applied problem, such as using learning theory to explain adherence to a medical regime.
Synoptic thinking is the main new demand: questions rarely say 'use the biological approach', so candidates must decide for themselves which approach, study and debate will produce the most convincing argument in the time available.
10. Assessment Objectives and Command Words |
Marks are allocated to assessment objectives, and each objective demands a different style of writing. Command words in the question tell candidates which objective is being targeted, so misreading them is one of the most common causes of lost marks.
- Describe, outline, state, give: AO1 — accurate, concise knowledge.
- Explain, apply, suggest: AO2 — link concepts to the scenario given.
- Evaluate, discuss, assess, to what extent, compare: AO3 — strengths, weaknesses, evidence, conclusion.
- Describe、outline、state、give:AO1——
- Explain、apply、suggest:AO2——
- Evaluate、discuss、assess、to what extent、compare:AO3——
AO2 answers must use the material in the scenario. A generic paragraph about Milgram earns AO1 credit but no application marks, whereas 'the nurse in the scenario followed the senior doctor's instruction, which mirrors the agentic shift described by Milgram' earns both.
AO3 answers need balance and a judgement. Listing three weaknesses without deciding which matters most usually caps the mark, because the assessment objective explicitly includes reaching a supported conclusion.
11. Revision Strategy and Exam Technique |
Psychology rewards active recall and structured writing far more than re-reading notes. Effective revision converts content into answers, under timed conditions, with examiner-style feedback.
- Build a study bank: aim, method, results, conclusion, evaluation for every named study.
- Build a debate bank: one paragraph for each debate, with two studies as evidence on each side.
- Practise design questions from memory, then check against mark schemes.
- Time your answers: roughly 1.5 minutes per mark leaves a few minutes for checking.
- Learn to define reliability, validity, ethics, objectivity and generalisability in one precise sentence each.
For extended evaluation questions, use a simple skeleton: point, evidence from a named study, explanation of why it matters, and a link back to the question. This structure keeps answers coherent under pressure and makes it easy for examiners to award marks.
Finally, avoid unsupported claims. 'Studies show that...' earns nothing; 'Loftus and Palmer found that leading questions altered speed estimates, which suggests memory is reconstructive' earns credit because it names the evidence and draws a conclusion.
