1. What UCAS Actually Is | UCAS 究竟是什么
UCAS stands for the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. It is a centralised admissions body, not a university and not an agency. When you apply through UCAS, you fill in one application form, attach one personal statement and one reference, and then send that single application to up to five courses at once.

A common mistake is using a school email that will expire after graduation. Use a personal address that you will still control in two years, because universities will keep emailing you long after you have replied to your offers.

4. Step 1: Creating Your UCAS Account | 第一步：创建 UCAS 账户
Go to the official UCAS website and choose the option to apply for undergraduate study. You will be asked to create an account with a username, a password and a valid email address. Keep the username simple and memorable - you will use it many times over the next year.

The personal details section covers your name, date of birth, nationality, country of birth and residency. Everything must match your passport. Even a small spelling difference can cause problems later when universities issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS.

Contact details include your postal address, email and phone number. Use an address where you can reliably receive post, because some universities still send physical documents. Add the international dialling code to your phone number, for example +86 for China.

You can apply to a maximum of five courses, either at five different universities or at the same university on different programmes. There is no order of preference: universities do not know whether a course is your first or fifth choice.

The one exception concerns medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. If you apply for one of these, you can use four choices for that subject and must use your fifth choice for a different subject. You cannot use all five for medicine.

7. Step 4: Education History and Qualifications | 第四步：教育背景与成绩
The education section is where most errors happen. You must list every school, college or institution you have attended since the age of 11, along with the dates you were there. Do not leave gaps.

You then add your qualifications. This includes qualifications you have already completed and qualifications you are still studying. For pending results, you enter the subject as pending, and the offer will usually be conditional on those results.

A well-filled education section makes you look organised. A messy one can lead to a rejected application or a delayed decision, which is exactly what you do not want in a competitive year.

8. Step 5: The Personal Statement | 第五步：个人陈述
The personal statement is the only genuinely free-text part of the application. Historically it was a single piece of writing with a limit of 4,000 characters including spaces. From the 2026 entry cycle, UCAS replaced it with three structured questions, with the same combined limit of 4,000 characters.

Write it yourself, then ask a teacher to comment on structure rather than wording. Universities run similarity detection, and a personal statement that is clearly not your own voice is one of the fastest ways to damage an application.

9. Step 6: The Reference | 第六步：推荐信
Every applicant needs one reference. If you are applying through a school or a UCAS centre, your referee is usually a subject teacher or a head of year, and the school uploads it directly. If you are applying independently, you will need to nominate a referee yourself.

UCAS will email your referee a link. Your application cannot be sent to universities until that reference is complete, so nominate your referee early and give them at least three weeks. Chasing a reference in January is stressful and entirely avoidable.

Before you pay, read every screen again. Check your name, your passport number, your course codes, your qualification dates and your English test scores. Once an application is sent, some parts can still be edited or added to, but the choices themselves cannot easily be changed.

The application fee is paid by card at the point of submission. In recent cycles the fee has been around £28.50 for up to five choices and about £22.50 for a single choice. Always confirm the exact figure on the UCAS website for your own cycle.

After payment, UCAS will send the application to your chosen universities and you will receive a confirmation email. Save that email. It contains your personal ID, which you will use in every future communication.

Deadlines are absolute and are set in UK time. For the 2026 entry cycle, the Oxbridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary deadline is 15 October 2025, the equal consideration deadline is 14 January 2026, and the final deadline is 30 June 2026. Always verify the exact date on ucas.com before you plan.
