📚 IGCSE CAIE Art & Design: Unit Test Mock Paper Walkthrough | IGCSE CAIE
This walkthrough unpacks a typical school-based IGCSE CAIE Art & Design unit test mock paper. Although CAIE does not set a single written theory paper for IGCSE Art & Design (0400), many centres still run an internal mock paper to test visual literacy, material knowledge, analytical writing and creative thinking before coursework deadlines and before the Externally Set Assignment begins.
The aim of the mock is diagnostic, not punitive. It shows you exactly which assessment objective is weak, so that the remaining weeks of studio time are spent fixing the right problem rather than simply making more work.
1. Mock Paper Overview and Exam Context |
A typical unit test mock paper lasts 60 to 90 minutes and is marked out of 100. It usually contains four sections: art vocabulary, materials and techniques, artwork analysis, and a short creative proposal. The test is formative rather than a final CAIE result, so use it to identify gaps in AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4.
The mock paper mirrors the language and assessment objectives used in the real course. That means the command words, the level descriptors and the expectation of visual evidence are all drawn from the same vocabulary your teacher uses when marking your portfolio. If you can answer the mock convincingly, you can annotate your sketchbook convincingly.
| Section | Content | Marks | Suggested time |
| A | Art vocabulary and terminology | 20 | 15 min |
| B | Materials, processes and techniques | 25 | 20 min |
| C | Artwork analysis and critical writing | 35 | 30 min |
| D | Creative proposal and personal response | 20 | 15 min |
| Total | Four sections | 100 | 80 min (+10 min reading) |
A useful rule of thumb for pacing is roughly 0.8 minutes per mark, which is why the analysis section eats up almost a third of the paper. Candidates who spend twenty minutes perfecting a two-mark definition almost always run out of time in Section C.
2. The Four Assessment Objectives Behind the Paper |
Every question in the mock is traceable to one of the four CAIE assessment objectives for Art & Design. Understanding this mapping turns a random test into a predictable one, because you can rehearse the skill rather than guess the question.
- AO1 - Record observations, experiences and ideas in visual and other forms.
- AO2 - Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes.
- AO3 - Develop ideas through investigation, demonstrating critical understanding.
- AO4 - Present a personal, coherent and informed response that realises intentions.
In the mock paper, AO1 appears as drawing-from-observation prompts and as questions asking you to interpret what has been recorded. AO2 dominates the materials section. AO3 is tested through comparison and contextual questions. AO4 is the creative proposal, where you must show intention, not just enthusiasm.
A common misconception is that AO3 is about art history knowledge. In fact, AO3 rewards informed judgement: you must connect what you see to what you know, and then say why it matters.
3. Section A: Art Vocabulary and Terminology | 第三部分之A:艺术词汇与术语
Section A is the shortest and the most mechanically marked. Definitions must be precise, and where possible illustrated by a named example. Vague wording such as "it looks nice" scores nothing, while "high tonal contrast between the lit cheek and the shadowed jaw" scores full marks.
High-frequency terms you should be able to define and apply:
- Composition - the arrangement of visual elements within the picture plane.
- Tonal value - the relative lightness or darkness of a colour or mark.
- Hue / saturation - the colour family itself / its purity or intensity.
- Impasto - thickly applied paint that retains the mark of the tool.
- Sgraffito - scratching through a surface layer to reveal the colour beneath.
- Chiaroscuro - the modelling of form through strong light and deep shadow.
- Maquette - a small three-dimensional model made before the final work.
- Assemblage - a three-dimensional work built from found or constructed objects.
- Monoprint - a single, unrepeatable print taken from a painted plate.
- Armature - an internal framework supporting a sculpture.
Answer pattern that scores well: define the term in one clause, then apply it. Compare "Impasto is thick paint" with "Impasto is thickly applied paint that holds the bristle marks, for example in the foreground of the study, where texture replaces linear description." The second answer demonstrates understanding of function, not only of fact.
4. Section B: Materials, Processes and Techniques |
Section B tests whether you have genuinely handled materials or merely read about them. Questions ask you to name the most suitable medium for a stated intention, to predict a likely fault, and to explain how a process works in the correct sequence.
| Medium | Strength | Common pitfall |
| Graphite | Tonal control, fine detail | Greasy shine when over-worked |
| Charcoal | Rapid, dramatic darks | Smudging without fixative |
| Watercolour | Transparency and layering | Muddy colour when over-mixed |
| Acrylic | Fast drying, impasto, layering | Dries darker; unusable tip if left open |
| Oil clay | Stays workable, holds fine form | Slumping in warm rooms without armature |
| Lino print | Bold simplification, multiples | Reversed image; uneven inking |
Safety and ethics marks are quietly available. Always mention ventilation for solvent-based media, dust masks when sanding plaster or stone, and correct disposal of clay slurry and turpentine.
ather-hard → attach handles with slip → bisque fire → glaze → glaze fire. Missing the bisque stage is a very common loss of marks.
5. Section C: Artwork Analysis and Critical Writing |
Section C carries the most marks and the most risk. It usually presents one or two unfamiliar reproductions and asks you to analyse form, then interpret meaning, then evaluate success against the artist's apparent intention.
The four-step frame below keeps your answer structured and prevents story-telling:
- Describe - what is literally present: subject, medium, scale, viewpoint.
- Analyse - how it is organised: composition, colour relationships, tonal structure, mark-making, leading lines.
- Interpret - what it may mean, supported by visual evidence and, where relevant, context.
- Evaluate - how far the visual decisions achieve the apparent intention.
Every interpretative claim needs a visual anchor. Weak: "The painting feels lonely." Strong: "The isolation is built visually: the single figure occupies less than one tenth of the canvas, and the horizon line sits high, pressing the figure down into the lower third."
For comparison questions, do not describe work A fully, then work B fully. Interleave them under shared criteria: composition, treatment of light, choice of medium, handling of the human figure. Structure earns marks in its own right.
6. Section D: The Creative Proposal |
The creative proposal is a short piece of writing, usually 150 to 200 words, plus two or three thumbnail sketches. It asks what you intend to make, why, with what materials, and how it connects to the artists you have studied.
A proposal that scores in the top band usually contains all of the following:
- A clear intention stated in one sentence, not a vague theme such as "nature".
- At least two named artists or designers, with a specific visual feature borrowed from each.
- A realistic materials and scale list, appropriate to the time available.
- An indication of process order and of what you will photograph as evidence.
- An honest note on risk: what might fail, and your fallback.
Avoid promising a ten-metre installation when you have three weeks and one classroom. Examiners reward realised intention, and an over-ambitious proposal usually ends as an unfinished piece with a strong artist statement attached - which scores badly on AO4.
7. Mark Scheme, Timing and Command Words |
Most school mock papers use a hybrid mark scheme: objective questions in Sections A and B, and levels-based descriptors in Sections C and D. Knowing which type you are answering changes how you write.
| Command word | What the examiner wants |
| Describe | Precise visual facts; no opinion needed |
| Explain | Cause and effect; use of "because", "so that" |
| Analyse | Break down how parts create an overall effect |
| Compare | Similarities and differences under shared criteria |
| Evaluate | Judgement supported by evidence, with a clear stance |
| Justify | Reasons for your own decision, linked to intention |
Total marks and timing follow a simple relationship:
Total = Section A + B + C + D = 20 + 25 + 35 + 20 = 100
Time per mark ≈ 80 min ÷ 100 marks = 0.8 min
Notice that a 6-mark analysis question deserves roughly five minutes, not fifteen. If your answer to a 6-mark question fills two sides, you are almost certainly describing rather than analysing.
8. Common Candidate Errors and How to Avoid Them | 第八部分:常见考生失误与规避方法
After marking several hundred mocks, the same mistakes appear again and again. None of them are about talent; all of them are about habit.
- Narrating the subject matter. "A girl is walking home and thinking about her family" describes a novel, not a painting. Anchor every claim to a visible decision.
- Naming no artists. "Some artists use texture" earns nothing. Name the artist and the specific work.
- Ignoring the command word. A describe question answered with an opinion loses the available marks even if the opinion is intelligent.
- Technical inaccuracy. Calling a blue-violet "a warm blue", or saying that watercolour is opaque, undermines every other correct statement.
- Writing instead of drawing. Where a question invites a diagram, a five-second tonal thumbnail can earn more than a paragraph.
- Untidy planning. Plan in the margin in note form; examiners do not mark the plan, but the structure it produces is visible in the answer.
9. Sketchbook Evidence and Annotation Practice |
The mock paper and the sketchbook are the same skill in two formats. Annotation is simply Section C written in the first person, next to your own work, in the present tense.
Useful annotation stems that produce AO3-quality writing:
- "I chose __ because __, and this allows the viewer to __."
- "Compared with my earlier study, the tonal range here is narrower, which makes the surface feel flatter and more graphic."
- "This failed because the paper buckled; next time I will stretch it before applying washes."
- "Referencing __'s handling of edge, I softened the contour on the shadow side only."
Photograph your work-in-progress at least three times per project: the underpainting or rough build, the midpoint, and the resolved state. These photographs are dated evidence of AO1 and AO3, and they are exactly what centres look for when moderating.
10. Worked Examples from the Mock |
Below are two short model answers, one from Section B and one from Section C, with a note on why they earn their marks.
Question (4 marks): Explain one reason why an artist might choose charcoal rather than graphite for a large observational study.
"Charcoal deposits a much darker, matte black than graphite and can cover a large sheet quickly with the side of the stick, so it suits a study where broad tonal masses matter more than fine detail - for example, blocking in the shadow side of a seated figure in the first ten minutes. The trade-off is that it smudges easily, so the artist would fix the drawing between layers."
This answer defines the material property, links it to an intention, gives a concrete scenario, and acknowledges a limitation. All four marks are available.
