📚 IGCSE CAIE Politics: Practical Assessment Essentials | IGCSE CAIE
CAIE does not currently offer a standalone IGCSE Politics syllabus, but political skills are commonly assessed through practical tasks in Global Perspectives, History, Sociology or school-based politics courses. These tasks require students to investigate issues, handle sources and construct evidence-based arguments. This article sets out the key practical assessment essentials for political analysis tasks.
1. Understanding the Practical Focus in Politics |
In IGCSE politics-related courses, practical assessment means investigating real political issues rather than conducting laboratory experiments. You will be asked to analyse sources, construct arguments and evaluate policies in context.
The skills are transferable: they help you read news critically, compare political systems and justify your own position with evidence.
- Source-based analysis tasks
- Case study investigation and reports
- Oral presentations, debates and policy evaluation
2. Understanding the Assessment Objectives |
Political practical tasks usually assess three objectives: knowledge and understanding, analysis and interpretation, and evaluation and judgement. You must balance description with critical judgement.
| Objective | Requirement | Task example |
|---|---|---|
| AO1 Knowledge | Recall political terms, systems, cases | Define sovereignty, identify features of democracy |
| AO2 Analysis | Break down issues, compare views and data | Compare two electoral systems or source viewpoints |
| AO3 Evaluation | Assess strengths and weaknesses, make judgements | Reach a justified conclusion on a policy change |
AO1 requires accurate use of terms such as sovereignty, legitimacy and democratic deficit. AO2 requires comparison of different viewpoints or data. AO3 requires a convincing conclusion that weighs alternatives, not just a summary.
3. Source Analysis and Evaluation |
Every practical political task begins with sources: a manifesto, a parliamentary speech, a newspaper editorial or a polling report. You must ask who wrote it, for what purpose, and whether it is supported by evidence.
Use the OPVL method to evaluate sources quickly: Origin, Purpose, Value, Limitation. For example, a government report may be valuable for showing official policy but limited by political bias.
- Origin: Who produced it? When and where?
- Purpose: Why was it written? To inform, persuade or justify?
- Value: What can it reveal about the issue?
- Limitation: What does it omit or distort?
4. Case Study Investigation |
A case study is a concrete example used to test a political concept. Instead of writing about democracy in general, you examine a specific election, a constitutional crisis or a social movement.
Choose recent and well-documented cases. For instance, you might compare voter turnout in two countries or analyse how one pressure group influenced legislation.
A strong case study links the example back to concepts like legitimacy, representation or accountability. Do not simply narrate events; explain their political significance.
5. Data and Evidence Handling |
Political practice often includes quantitative evidence: poll ratings, turnout figures, GDP spending or parliamentary seats. You should present figures accurately, identify changes and explain what the data suggests.
A simple percentage change helps you compare trends across time.
Percentage change = (new value −
