Everything in this guide applies directly to the extended-response questions in the examination, where you are asked to move beyond description and show that you can use sociological concepts, studies and perspectives to argue a case and then judge it.
1. Understanding the CAIE Sociology Essay Question | 理解 CAIE 社会学论文题目
CAIE IGCSE Sociology extended-response questions often carry 12 marks, 15 marks or more, and they test both sociological knowledge and evaluation. Command words such as 'assess', 'to what extent', 'discuss', or 'evaluate' signal that you must present more than one side of the argument.
Before writing, underline the key concepts and the focus of the question. For example, a question on 'the nuclear family is the most functional family type' asks you to evaluate functionalist claims against alternatives.
Underlining protects you from the most common cause of low marks: writing everything you know about the topic instead of answering the precise question that has been set. If the question says 'to what extent', a purely descriptive answer cannot reach the top band.
A useful habit is to rewrite the question in your own words in one sentence at the top of your plan. This forces you to identify the debate before you identify the paragraphs.
- Topic — what area of sociology is being examined (family, education, crime, social stratification). |
- Focus — the specific claim or relationship you must address. |
- Instruction — the command word that tells you how much evaluation is needed. |
2. Command Words and What They Demand |
Each command word has a distinct demand. 'Describe' and 'Explain' questions in the shorter parts of the paper need accurate knowledge applied to the question, whereas the essay-length questions almost always require comparison, criticism and a judgement.
| Command word | What it demands |
| Describe | State features or patterns accurately; no criticism needed. | |
| Explain | Give reasons and causes using sociological concepts. | |
| Discuss | Present competing views and weigh them. |
| Assess / Evaluate | Judge the strength of a claim using evidence and theory. | |
| To what extent | Reach a degree judgement: fully, partly or barely true. | |
The highest-scoring answers do not simply say that a view has strengths and weaknesses; they explain which weaknesses matter more and why, using sociological reasoning.
3. The PEEL-FE Essay Framework | PEEL-FE
A reliable framework keeps your answer organised under exam pressure. PEEL-FE extends the familiar PEEL paragraph structure with two extra stages that earn the evaluation marks.
PEEL-FE = Point → Explain → Evidence → Link → Further perspective → Evaluation
- Point — one clear sentence stating the argument of the paragraph. |
- Explain — unpack the sociological idea behind the point. |
- Evidence — name a study, theorist, statistic or example. |
- Link — connect the paragraph back to the wording of the question. |
- Further perspective — introduce a competing view or an alternative explanation. |
- Evaluation — judge which perspective is stronger and explain the criterion for that judgement. |
Using the same six-step sequence in every body paragraph makes your argument predictable to the examiner in the best sense: they can see your knowledge, your use of evidence and your evaluation without hunting for them.
4. Planning: Underlining Key Concepts and Building a Skeleton |
Spend around three to five minutes planning a long answer. A plan of six or seven bullet lines is usually enough: an introduction, three or four body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
A good plan answers three questions: what is the claim, what supports it, and what undermines it. Write the names of the sociologists you intend to use next to each bullet so that you do not forget them mid-answer.
If you have spare time at the end, the plan is also the quickest checklist for proofreading: every bullet should be traceable to a paragraph in your answer.
- Underline the key concept (for example 'nuclear family'). |
- Underline the evaluative demand (for example 'most functional'). |
- Decide your overall line of argument before you start writing. |
5. Writing the Introduction |
An effective introduction does three things in three or four sentences: it defines the key concept, it signals the debate, and it states your line of argument.
Definitions matter because sociological terms are contested. Defining the nuclear family as 'a couple and their dependent children, usually living together' immediately shows the examiner that you understand that the term is a construction rather than a natural unit.
Avoid long winded openings such as 'Since the beginning of time, families have existed'. Nothing is gained from them and time is lost.
Introduction = Definition + Debate + Line of argument
If you state your line of argument at the start, the conclusion then becomes a return to that position with the evidence now in place, which reads as a coherent argument rather than a summary.
6. Developing Body Paragraphs |
Each body paragraph should have a single job. In a typical 12-mark answer, three well-developed paragraphs covering a supporting view, a challenging view and a middle position will score more highly than six thin paragraphs.
Development means pushing each point one step further with a 'because' or a 'which means that'. For example, instead of writing 'Parsons argues the nuclear family is functional', write 'Parsons argues the nuclear family is functional because it is geographically mobile, which means that industrial economies can move labour to where it is needed'.
Signposting words such as 'however', 'in contrast', 'nevertheless' and 'consequently' show the examiner that you are constructing an argument rather than listing facts.
7. Using Sociological Evidence, Studies and Concepts |
Evidence in sociology takes several forms: named theorists, named studies, official statistics, historical comparison and cross-cultural examples. Using a mixture shows breadth as well as depth.
A named study should be used, not merely mentioned. If you cite Zaretsky, explain that he sees the family as an economic unit that cushions workers from the exploitation they face at work, which benefits capitalism rather than the family itself.
Cross-cultural evidence is especially powerful in family questions. Kibbutz child-rearing, matrifocal Caribbean households and extended family networks in South Asian communities all show that the nuclear form is a social arrangement, not a biological necessity.
- Name the theorist or study precisely. |
- State the argument of that study in one clause. |
- Apply it to the exact wording of the question. |
8. Evaluation: The Skill That Separates B from A* | 评估:区分 B 与 A* 的关键技能
Evaluation is not the same as criticism. Criticising a theory means saying it is wrong; evaluating means judging how convincing it is, and on what grounds, compared with the alternatives.
Strong evaluation uses explicit criteria: empirical support, conceptual clarity, ideological bias, historical relevance, and whether the theory can account for change and diversity.
Phrases such as 'the strongest objection is...', 'this evidence weakens the functionalist case because...' and 'on balance, the Marxist view explains inequality better than it explains diversity' show evaluative thinking rather than simple balance.
诸如 "the strongest objection is..."(最强的反驳是……)、"this evidence weakens the functionalist case because..."(这一证据削弱功能主义论证,因为……)以及 "on balance, the Marxist view explains inequality better than it explains diversity"(总体来看,马克思主义视角解释不平等优于解释多样性)这类表达,显示的是评估性思维,而非简单的两面陈述。
Every evaluation should include a criterion and a comparison. A judgement without a reason earns little; a judgement with a stated criterion earns a great deal.
9. Writing the Conclusion |
The conclusion should not introduce new evidence and should not repeat the introduction word for word. It should answer the question directly and state the degree to which the claim holds.
A useful pattern is: restate the claim in the terms of the question, summarise the decisive reason, and give a qualified judgement. 'Overall, the nuclear family performs important functions in industrial societies, but the evidence of family diversity shows it is functional for some groups more than others.'
If the question asks 'to what extent', your conclusion must contain a degree expression such as 'largely', 'partly', 'only to a limited extent' or 'in most but not all cases'.
如果题目问 "to what extent",结论中必须出现程度表达,如 "largely"(很大程度上)、"partly"(部分地)、"only to a limited extent"(仅在有限程度上)或 "in most but not all cases"(在多数但并非所有情况下)。
10. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误及规避方法
The most frequent weakness in IGCSE sociology essays is description without direction: a well-informed answer that never answers the question. Always return to the command word at the end of each paragraph.
The second mistake is unnamed evidence. Statements such as 'some sociologists believe' or 'studies show' carry little weight. Use surnames, dates and the substance of the argument.
The third mistake is unbalanced treatment: three paragraphs supporting the claim and one sentence against it. If a question invites evaluation, opposing material deserves real development, not a gesture.
- Writing everything you know rather than what is asked. |
- Citing theorists without explaining their argument. |
- Ending with a summary instead of a judgement. |
- Ignoring the 'extent' wording in the question. |
11. Model Answer: 'The Nuclear Family Is the Most Functional Family Type.' Discuss. |
The following model answer follows the PEEL-FE structure and shows how definition, evidence, counter-argument and evaluation are combined in a single extended response. The Chinese text after each paragraph explains the writing move being made.
Introduction. The nuclear family is usually defined as a couple and their dependent children living in one household. Functionalists such as Murdock and Parsons argue that this family form is the most functional because it performs functions that no other arrangement performs as efficiently. This essay will argue that the nuclear family is functional in specific industrial contexts, but that the claim that it is the most functional family type is weakened by evidence of family diversity, by feminist analysis of its costs to women, and by the existence of alternative family forms that function successfully.
Supporting evidence. Murdock, writing in 1949, claimed that the nuclear family performs four essential functions in every society: sexual regulation, reproduction, economic provision and socialisation. Parsons, writing in 1955, developed this by arguing that the nuclear family fits industrial society because it is geographically and socially mobile, providing both primary socialisation of children and the stabilisation of adult personalities. The warm, emotional environment of the household is said to act as a refuge from the competitive pressures of paid work.
Counter-argument. However, feminist sociologists challenge the assumption that what is functional for society is functional for everyone. Oakley argued that the housewife role is a relatively recent construction and that women in nuclear families carry a dual burden of paid work and unpaid domestic labour. Delphy and Leonard similarly argue that the family is a site of gendered exploitation in which men benefit from women's unpaid work. If the nuclear family functions at the expense of women, it cannot be described as the most functional type without qualification.
Further perspective. Marxist analysis adds a further objection. Zaretsky argues that the family cushions workers from the alienation of capitalist employment, which means it helps to reproduce the labour force and to sustain an unequal economic system. The family is therefore functional for capitalism rather than for its members. From a different direction, the New Right, including Murray, defends the nuclear family, but its argument that lone-parent households are dysfunctional has been criticised for blaming the poor for structural problems such as unemployment and low pay.
