📚 IGCSE CAIE English Literature: Case Study Practice | IGCSE CAIE 英语文学:案例分析实战演练

This revision guide walks you through a practical case-study approach to the CAIE IGCSE Literature in English examination. It combines text analysis, planning strategies and model responses so you can move from 'reading' a text to 'writing like an examiner'.

本复习指南通过实战案例方法带你准备 CAIE IGCSE 英语文学考试。它结合文本分析、答题规划与示范答案,帮助你从 "阅读" 文本进阶到 "像考官一样写作"。

The method is deliberately narrow. Instead of trying to know six texts vaguely, you will build three deep case files - one poem, one prose extract, one drama speech - and learn to recycle the same analytical moves across every question the paper can ask.

这套方法刻意收窄范围。与其对六部作品都一知半解,不如建立三份深度案例档案——一首诗、一段散文、一段戏剧台词——并学会把同一套分析动作复用到试卷可能提出的任何问题上。

1. Exam Overview and Assessment Objectives | 考试概览与评分目标

CAIE IGCSE Literature in English (0475, and 0992 for the 9-1 grading scale) asks you to respond to set poetry, prose and drama texts, as well as unseen extracts. Marks are awarded for understanding meaning, analysing language, form and structure, making connections to context, and developing a personal response supported by evidence.

CAIE IGCSE 英语文学(0475,以及采用 9-1 评分的 0992)要求你回答指定的诗歌、散文与戏剧文本,以及未读节选。评分考查对意义的理解、对语言/形式/结构的分析、与语境建立联系,以及有证据支持的个人反应。

Always check which paper you are sitting. Component 1 focuses on poetry and prose, Component 2 on drama, and Component 3 or 4 are the shorter alternatives used in certain administrative zones. The same analytical toolkit applies across all papers.

始终确认你参加的试卷。试卷一聚焦诗歌与散文,试卷二聚焦戏剧,试卷三或试卷四是部分考区采用的较短试卷。所有试卷都使用同一套分析工具。

The four assessment objectives below are what examiners actually tick. Every paragraph you write should be traceable to at least one of them.

下表四个评分目标就是考官真正打勾的依据。你写的每一段都应至少对应其中一项。

AO What it rewards | 考查内容
AO1 Detailed knowledge of content in drama, poetry and prose | 对戏剧、诗歌、散文内容的细致掌握
AO2 Deeper awareness of ideas, attitudes and context beyond surface meaning | 超越表层含义,洞察思想、态度与语境
AO3 How writers use language, structure and form to shape meaning and effect | 作家如何用语言、结构与形式塑造意义与效果
AO4 A sensitive, informed personal response | 有感受力、有依据的个人反应

Total mark ≈ AO1 + AO2 + AO3 + AO4

Notice that AO3 is the objective most candidates under-serve. Retelling the plot is AO1 only; explaining how three words create an effect is AO3 and is where the higher bands live.

注意 AO3 是多数考生最薄弱的一项。复述情节只算 AO1;解释三个词如何制造效果才是 AO3,也是高分档次所在。

2. Selecting Your Case Texts and Building Case Files | 选择案例文本与建立案例档案

Choose a poem, a prose extract and a drama speech you know in depth. Choose them, do not let them choose you: pick the ones where you can already say something interesting in thirty seconds.

选择一首诗、一段散文和一段戏剧独白进行深入学习。要主动挑选,而不是被动接受:挑那些你在三十秒内就能说出有趣见解的文本。

For each, create a one-page case file: themes, central contrasts, 3-4 key quotations, and the writer's method in each quotation. One page only - a case file that runs to five pages will never be reread in May.

为每个文本制作一页案例档案:主题、核心对比、3 至 4 条关键引文,以及每条引文中的作家手法。只做一页——五页长的档案到五月你根本不会再翻。

Keep all three case files on one A4 sheet if you can. Physical proximity forces you to notice the pattern you are actually good at - most candidates have one signature move, and it should appear on every page.

如果可能,把三份档案压缩到一张 A4 纸上。物理上的邻近会逼你发现自己的强项模式——多数考生都有一个招牌分析动作,它应当出现在每一页上。

3. Annotation That Actually Earns Marks | 真正能得分的批注方法

Annotation is not highlighting. A highlighted line is a line you have decorated; an annotated line is a line you can argue from. Use four marginal codes and nothing more.

批注不是划荧光笔。被划线的句子只是被装饰了;被批注的句子才是你能据以论证的。只用四种页边代号,别再多。

If a page of your anthology has no question marks on it, you have not read it closely enough. The strongest candidates annotate the words they do not understand rather than the words they already like.

如果你文选中某一页没有任何问号,说明你读得还不够细。最强的考生批注的是自己不懂的词,而不是自己已经喜欢的词。

4. Quoting Small, Explaining Deep | 引文要短,分析要深

Strong candidates do not quote long passages; they isolate one or two words and explain how those words work in context. Long quotations are a symptom of a candidate who is not sure what to say, so they hand the sentence back to the examiner.

高分考生不会引用大段文字;他们会挑出一两个词并解释这些词在语境中的作用。长引文往往是"不知道该说什么"的症状——等于把句子交还给了考官。

For example, annotate 'fearful symmetry' in Blake's "The Tyger" by noting the clash between 'fearful' (terror) and 'symmetry' (order). The two words cannot logically coexist, and that impossibility is the poem's engine.

例如,批注布莱克《老虎》中的 "fearful symmetry"(可怖的匀称),记下 "fearful"(恐惧)与 "symmetry"(匀称)之间的冲突。这两个词在逻辑上无法共存,而这种不可能性正是这首诗的引擎。

Now push it one step further. Because the balance is described by a blacksmith figure - 'what the hand, dare seize the fire' - the poem links divine creation to industrial craft, so 'symmetry' becomes a manufactured value and 'fearful' becomes the price of making it.

再推进一步。由于这种匀称是由铁匠形象描述的——"什么样的手,敢攫取那火焰"——诗歌把神圣的创造与工业技艺联系起来,于是 "symmetry" 变成了一种被制造出来的价值,而 "fearful" 成了制造它的代价。

Rule of thumb: one to three quoted words per analytical paragraph, integrated into your own sentence grammar rather than dropped in as a block.

经验法则:每个分析段落引用一到三个词,并把它嵌进你自己的句子语法中,而不是整块丢进去。

5. The Paragraph Framework That Examiners Recognise | 考官认得的段落框架

Use a five-move paragraph. It is not a formula for good writing, but it is a reliable scaffold when you are under time pressure.

使用"五步段落"。它不是优秀写作的公式,但在时间压力下是可靠脚手架。

Point → Evidence (1-3 words) → Method → Effect → So what (AO2/AO4)

The last move is the one candidates skip, and it is worth the most. 'So what' answers why this detail matters to the text's whole argument, not just to this line.

最后一步最常被跳过,却最值钱。"那又如何"回答的是:这个细节对整部作品的主张为何重要,而不只是对这一行重要。

A weak version says: 'Lady Macbeth asks to be unsexed, which shows she is ambitious.' A strong version reads: 'The imperative 'unsex me here' asks for the violent removal of the very category - woman - that Jacobean society used to limit her, so her ambition is presented not as greed but as self-erasure.'

弱版本写:"麦克白夫人要求被去性别化,这说明她有野心。"强版本写:"祈使句 'unsex me here' 请求粗暴地移除那个限制她的范畴——女人——因此她的野心并非被呈现为贪婪,而是自我抹除。"

Notice the strong version names the grammatical form (imperative), reads a single word in its cultural frame, and delivers an idea the examiner could not have predicted from the question alone.

注意强版本点明了语法形式(祈使句),把单个词放进文化框架中解读,并给出一个考官无法仅凭题目预测到的见解。

6. Language, Form and Structure: Three Separate Tools | 语言、形式与结构:三件独立工具

Candidates often treat AO3 as a single skill and then default to metaphor-hunting. Split it into three layers and you will always have something to say.

If you are stuck, describe what is unusual about a line's shape before you describe what it means. Line endings, punctuation and stanza lengths never lie about a writer's intent.

如果你卡住了,先描述这一行形状上的异常,再去描述它的含义。行末、标点与诗节长度,对作家意图从不说谎。

A caesura in the middle of a heroic line often signals hesitation; enjambment across a stanza break often signals momentum outrunning control. Test the hypothesis against the rest of the text before you commit to it.

英雄体诗行中间的停顿常常暗示犹疑;跨诗节的跨行常常暗示失控的冲势。下结论前,先用全篇检验你的假设。

7. Context Without Bolting It On | 语境不要生硬贴标签

Context is AO2, not a separate paragraph at the end beginning with the words 'In those days...'. Bolted-on context reads as a history lesson and earns almost nothing.

语境属于 AO2,不是文章末尾以"在那个年代……"开头的独立段落。硬贴的语境读起来像历史课,几乎不得分。

Instead, let context do work inside your sentence. The Jacobean belief in the divine right of kings is not a fact about 1606; it is the reason Macbeth's regicide feels like a wound in the natural order, which is why the horses eat each other.

更好的做法是让语境在句中发挥作用。詹姆斯一世时代的君权神授观念不是"1606 年的事实";它是弑君之所以像自然秩序上的一道伤口的原因,也正是马匹互相吞食的原因。

Three context types are genuinely useful, and you should keep one of each per text.

真正有用的语境有三类,每篇文本各留一条即可。

8. Worked Case Study: Poetry | 实战案例:诗歌

Take Owen's "Dulce et Decorum Est" as the case poem. Case file in one page:

以欧文的《为国捐躯甘甜而光荣》作为案例诗歌。一页档案如下:

The poem's structure moves from exhausted plural movement in the first stanza, through a single dying man in the second, to a direct address to the reader in the fourth. That narrowing - many, then one, then you - is the argument.

这首诗的结构从第一节疲惫的复数群像,经过第二节中一个垂死的个体,走向第四节对读者的直接呼唤。这种收窄——许多人、一个人、你——就是它的论点。

Note the word 'Lie'. It is both the verb of the dying man falling and the noun for the slogan itself. A single-word quotation therefore contains the poem's entire accusation, and takes one line to write about.

注意 "Lie" 一词。它既是垂死者倒下的动词,也是那句口号本身的名词。于是单个词的引文就承载了整首诗的控诉,
