📚 IGCSE CAIE Geography: Case Study Exam Practice | IGCSE CAIE
Case study questions can seem intimidating, but they are also where top students separate themselves. In CAIE IGCSE Geography, Paper 1 and Paper 2 often ask you to use a named example to explain causes, effects, and management. This guide gives you ready-to-use case studies, a proven exam technique and a revision plan you can start today.
1. Why Case Studies Matter in CAIE IGCSE Geography | 为什么案例分析在 CAIE IGCSE 地理中至关重要
Case study questions assess your ability to apply geographical theory to real places. Examiners are not looking for general statements such as "floods cause damage"; they want named locations, dates, statistics, and specific human and physical interactions. A generic answer cannot move above the lower mark band, no matter how well written it is.
Typical 7-mark case study questions appear in every IGCSE Geography paper. You may be asked to describe the causes of a hazard, explain the effects of urbanisation, or evaluate the success of a management strategy. The command word tells you how deep to go; the case study supplies the evidence that earns the marks.
- Command word - Describe, Explain, Evaluate |
- Named example - Use a real place, never "a city" or "a river" |
- Specific data - Magnitude, population, costs, dates |
- Process link - Connect the physical and human causes |
2. Command Words and the 7-Mark Mark Scheme |
CAIE uses a level-of-response mark scheme for extended case study answers. You are not collecting one mark per fact; you are being placed into a band according to how well you explain and how far you evaluate. Understanding the band descriptors is the fastest way to gain marks.
| Level | 档次 | Typical marks | 典型分档 | What the examiner sees | 考官看到的内容 |
| Level 1 | 第一档 | 1-3 | Simple statements, little or no named place | 简单陈述,几乎没有具体地点 |
| Level 2 | 第二档 | 4-5 | Clear explanation with named example and some data | 有具体实例和部分数据的清晰解释 |
"Describe" needs patterns and data. "Explain" needs cause-and-effect chains using words such as because, therefore, as a result and this leads to. "Evaluate" needs both sides and a final judgement, not a summary.
解释" 需要因果链,使用 because、therefore、as a result、this leads to 这类连接词。"
3. The Four-Step Answer Frame: P-E-E-L | 四步答题框架:P-E-E-L
Use one reliable structure for every case study paragraph: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. This keeps your answer organised under time pressure and guarantees that data and process appear in every paragraph.
A worked example: "One cause of flooding in Boscastle was intense rainfall (Point). On 16 August 2004, around 200 mm fell in about five hours (Evidence). The steep valley sides and impermeable slate meant little infiltration, so surface runoff reached the river quickly (Explanation). This created a flash flood with a peak discharge far above normal (Link)."
Strong case study answer = Named place + Date + Data + Process + Judgement
Boscastle 2004
Boscastle is a small village in Cornwall, south-west England, where two rivers meet in a narrow, steep-sided valley. On 16 August 2004 a slow-moving thunderstorm stalled over the catchment and produced a flash flood that became one of the most cited river case studies in CAIE teaching.
- Physical causes - About 200 mm of rain in roughly 5 hours; impermeable slate; steep slopes; small, flashy catchment |
- Human factors - Buildings on the floodplain; bridges acting as bottlenecks; limited drainage capacity |
- Effects - 58 properties damaged, about 100 vehicles washed away, roughly £20 million in insurance losses, over 1,000 people affected |
- Management - A £4.6 million scheme widened the channel, raised bridges and added upstream storage |
For management questions, add the evaluation: the scheme reduced flood risk in the village, but it cannot stop extreme rainfall, and similar valleys elsewhere remain unprotected, so hard engineering is only a partial solution.
Soufrière Hills
Montserrat is a small Caribbean island on a destructive plate margin, where the North American Plate subducts beneath the Caribbean Plate. The Soufrière Hills volcano reactivated in July 1995 after centuries of dormancy and dominated the island's geography for more than a decade.
- Hazard events - Pyroclastic flows, ash falls and lahars; the 25 June 1997 eruption killed 19 people | 灾害事件——火山碎屑流、火山灰降落与火山泥流;1997 年 6 月 25 日喷发造成 19 人死亡
- Economic effects - Capital Plymouth abandoned and buried; airport and port destroyed; tourism and farming collapsed |
- Social effects - Population fell from about 11,000 to around 5,000; around 7,000 people emigrated, mainly to the UK and Antigua |
- Management - An exclusion zone covering the southern half of the island, monitoring by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, UK government aid and resettlement | 管理——覆盖岛屿南半部的禁区、蒙特塞拉特火山观测站的监测、英国政府援助与重新安置
This case study works for both "hazards" and "migration" questions. Notice that the same event supplies push factors for out-migration, which is exactly the kind of link that moves an answer into the top band.
6. Case Study 3: Urbanisation - Lagos, Nigeria |
Lagos is Nigeria's largest city and one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the world, with a population estimated at around 15 million. Rural-urban migration plus natural increase, with a growth rate of roughly 3% a year, have made it the standard CAIE example of rapid urbanisation in a low-income country.
- Push factors - Rural poverty, low farm incomes, drought and insecurity in northern states |
- Pull factors - Jobs in ports, trade and construction; schools and hospitals; perceived opportunities |
- Problems - Over 60% of residents live in informal settlements such as Makoko, home to about 100,000 people; congestion, waste and poor sanitation | 问题——超过 60% 的居民住在 Makoko 等非正规住区,Makoko 约有 10 万人;交通拥堵、垃圾与卫生设施不足
- Management - Bus rapid transit corridors, the Eko Atlantic reclamation project, waste-collection contracts and slum-upgrading schemes | 管理——快速公交走廊、Eko Atlantic 填海项目、垃圾收集承包与贫民区改造计划
When evaluating, be honest and balanced: these schemes improve infrastructure and attract investment, but the Eko Atlantic project is expensive, benefits wealthier residents most, and may displace existing communities and increase coastal pressure.
7. Case Study 4: Tropical Deforestation - Brazilian Amazon |
The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical forest on Earth and the classic case study for tropical deforestation. In Brazil, annual forest loss peaked at about 27,000 km² in 2004, fell sharply after new policies, then rose again to roughly 11,500 km² by 2022.
- Causes - Cattle ranching is the main driver, followed by soya cultivation, logging, road building and mining |
- Environmental effects - Loss of biodiversity, soil erosion, reduced carbon storage and weakening of the water cycle |
- Human effects - Land conflicts, displacement of indigenous communities, short-term jobs but long-term income insecurity |
- Management - Satellite monitoring, protected areas, the 2004 PPCDAm action plan, certification schemes and international pressure | 管理——卫星监测、保护区、2004 年 PPCDAm 行动计划、认证机制与国际压力
The strongest evaluative point for Amazon questions is the link between policy and rate of change: deforestation fell by around 80% between 2004 and 2012 after monitoring and enforcement improved, proving that human decisions, not inevitability, drive the figures.
8. Case Study 5: Coastal Erosion and Management - Holderness, UK | 案例五:海岸侵蚀与管理——英国 Holderness
The Holderness coast in East Yorkshire is one of Europe's fastest-eroding coastlines, retreating at an average of 1.5 to 2 metres a year, and locally much faster. It is formed of soft glacial boulder clay, which is easily removed by
