📚 IGCSE CAIE Accounting: High-Frequency Topics and Common Mistakes | IGCSE CAIE

The Cambridge IGCSE Accounting (0452) syllabus rewards precise application of double-entry rules, period-end adjustments and ratio interpretation rather than memorising formats alone. Marks are lost far more often through a wrong side, a missing accrual or a misunderstood command word than through ignorance of the whole topic. This article summarises the topics most frequently examined and the mistakes that regularly cost marks, so that your revision can be targeted rather than repetitive.

1. The Accounting Equation and Double Entry |

The accounting equation is the foundation of the entire course. A business is treated as a separate entity from its owner, so whatever the business owns (assets) must have been financed either by the owner (capital) or by outsiders (liabilities). Every transaction therefore has a dual effect, which is exactly why the total of all debits must always equal the total of all credits.

Assets = Capital + Liabilities

Capital = Assets − Liabilities

The double-entry rules are most often tested through journal entries rather than through theory questions. Debits increase assets, expenses and drawings; credits increase liabilities, capital and income. The reverse is equally true: a debit decreases a liability, capital or income, while a credit decreases an asset or an expense.

Assets
Liabilities
Capital
Income
Expenses
Drawings

Common mistakes here include debiting capital when the owner introduces additional capital (it should be credited, with bank or cash debited), treating drawings as a business expense instead of a reduction of capital, and recording the purchase of a non-current asset such as equipment as an expense rather than as an asset.

2. Books of Prime Entry and the Journal |

Books of prime entry are where transactions are first recorded before being posted to the ledger. The sales day book records credit sales, the purchases day book records credit purchases, the sales returns day book records returns inwards, and the purchases returns day book records returns outwards. The cash book records all bank and cash transactions and also acts as a ledger account, while the petty cash book operates under the imprest system. The general journal is used for everything that does not fit the other books, such as the purchase or disposal of non-current assets, correction of errors, opening entries and end-of-period adjustments.

The three ledgers must also be distinguished clearly: the sales ledger contains the personal accounts of credit customers (trade receivables), the purchases ledger contains the personal accounts of credit suppliers (trade payables), and the nominal ledger contains all the remaining accounts such as expenses, income, assets and liabilities.

The classic error is putting cash sales into the sales day book, or confusing trade discount (a deduction shown on the invoice and never recorded separately) with cash discount (a settlement discount that must be recorded in the ledger when the payment is made).

3. The Trial Balance and Types of Error |

A trial balance is a list of all ledger balances at a particular date, with debit balances in one column and credit balances in the other. It is a useful check on arithmetic accuracy, but it is not proof that the accounts are correct, because a number of errors do not affect the totals on the two sides.

Type of error 错误类型 Meaning 含义 Affects trial balance?
Error of omission 遗漏错误 Transaction completely left out 交易完全未记录 No 否
Error of commission 记账错误 Posted to a wrong account of the same class 记入同类错误账户 No 否
Error of principle 原理错误 Posted to a wrong class of account 记入错误类别账户 No 否
Error of original entry Wrong amount used in both entries 双方金额同错 No 否
Compensating error 抵销错误 Two errors cancel out 两个错误互相抵消 No 否
Complete reversal 完全反向 Debit and credit swapped 借贷完全反写 No 否
One-sided entry 单边记录 Only one side posted 只记一方 Yes 是

Students frequently answer "error of commission" when the question actually describes an error of principle. The test is simple: if a motor vehicle was debited to motor expenses, the wrong class of account was used, so it is an error of principle. If a payment to A Smith was debited to B Smith, both accounts are personal accounts of the same class, so it is an error of commission.

4. Correction of Errors and the Suspense Account |

When the trial balance does not agree, the difference is temporarily placed in a suspense account so that a trial balance can still be produced. Corrections are then made through the general journal, and the suspense account is cleared as each error is corrected. Once all corrections have been made, the suspense account should have a nil balance and must not appear in the statement of financial position.

A key exam point is that a suspense account is only needed for errors that caused the trial balance to disagree. Errors of principle, omission, commission, original entry, compensating errors and complete reversal are corrected by journal entries that do not involve the suspense account at all.

Typical correction

Workings should always be shown. Even if the final figure is wrong, a clearly labelled correction entry and a correctly identified error type usually earn method marks.

5. Bank Reconciliation Statements |

The cash book balance and the bank statement balance rarely agree on the same date because of timing differences and items the business has not yet recorded. A bank reconciliation statement explains the difference between the two balances.

Start from the updated cash book balance, not the original one, and never adjust the bank statement itself. Also note the direction: an unpresented cheque is added back to the bank statement balance when reconciling towards the cash book figure, and a bank error must be corrected by the bank, not by the business.

6. Depreciation and Disposal of Non-Current Assets |

Depreciation is the systematic allocation of the cost of a non-current asset over its useful life. It is not a fund set aside for replacement, and it is not affected by the market value of the asset. Land is normally not depreciated because it has an indefinite useful life.

Annual depreciation = (Cost − Residual value) ÷ Useful life

Depreciation = Net book value × Rate %

Profit or loss on disposal = Disposal proceeds − Net book value at the date of disposal

Where an asset is bought or sold part way through the year, depreciation must be charged on a time basis (pro rata). The most reliable sequence for a disposal question is: charge depreciation up to the date of disposal, transfer the cost to the disposal account, transfer the accumulated depreciation to the disposal account, record the
