📚 IGCSE Cambridge Drama: Exam Technique and Assessment Criteria | IGCSE Cambridge
This guide breaks down the Cambridge IGCSE Drama assessment, the marks you need to protect, and the habits that turn a good answer into a high-band response.
Cambridge IGCSE Drama is unusual among the arts subjects because it rewards two very different kinds of thinking: the physical, instinctive work of making theatre, and the disciplined, evidence-based work of writing about it. Students who perform confidently in the studio often lose marks in the written paper because they describe feelings instead of stagecraft; students who write beautifully often lose marks in coursework because they cannot sustain energy and focus in performance. This article maps out both halves of that equation, with the specific techniques that examiners reward.
1. The Big Picture: Two Components and Their Weighting |
Cambridge IGCSE Drama combines a written examination with practical coursework. In the current specification, the written paper normally carries 40% of the final grade, while practical coursework carries 60%. The written paper is typically around 1 hour 45 minutes long and is taken at the end of the course.
This split means that written analytical skills and practical performance skills are both essential. You cannot pass on acting alone, and you cannot ignore written evidence.
|---|---|---|
| Written Paper / 笔试 | 40% | Analysis, evaluation, knowledge of drama / 分析、评价、戏剧知识 |
The written paper usually includes short structured answers on an extract and an extended analytical response. Coursework involves solo, scripted group and devised performance, supported by written or portfolio evidence of your process. Both halves are internally connected: the vocabulary you learn for the written paper is exactly the vocabulary that makes your practical work intentional rather than accidental.
2. What the Written Paper Actually Tests |
The written paper is not a memory test on plot. It tests whether you can take a printed page of dialogue and stage directions and turn it into a production that an audience would feel. Examiners want to see that you can make decisions and then justify them with reference to the text.
Most papers contain two kinds of task:
- Extract-based questions / 剧本节选题: you are given a short passage and asked how you would perform or direct it, or how you would design one element for it.
- Extract-based questions /
- Extended response / 扩展大题: a longer essay-style answer, often on a play or extract studied in class, requiring analysis and evaluation rather than description.
- Extended response /
The key insight is that every question, even one that begins "describe", is ultimately asking for intention. What do you want the audience to think, feel and understand at that moment, and what exact stagecraft will produce that result?
3. Assessment Objectives and How They Map to Marks |
Cambridge arts specifications are built around three assessment objectives. In drama they broadly cover knowledge and understanding of drama, the application of practical skills, and the ability to analyse and evaluate your own work and the work of others.
| AO / 目标 | Skill / 能力 | Where it is rewarded / 体现在哪里 |
|---|---|---|
| AO1 | Knowledge and understanding of drama / 戏剧知识与理解 | Written paper, portfolio / 笔试、档案 |
| AO2 | Application of performance or design skills / 表演或设计技能的应用 | Coursework performances / 课程作业演出 |
Top-band answers usually hit all three at once: they show accurate drama knowledge (AO1), they describe a realisable performance or design choice (AO2), and they evaluate the effect of that choice on an audience (AO3). A single sentence can therefore earn credit across two or three objectives if it is written precisely.
4. Reading the Extract: From First Impression to Directorial Concept |
Before you write anything, read the extract twice. The first read is for meaning: who wants what, who is stopping them, and what changes by the end of the passage? The second read is for evidence: the punctuation, the pauses, the stage directions, the line lengths, and the moment the tone shifts.
Annotate the extract with three symbols: a question mark for anything you find confusing, a star for the emotional high point, and an arrow for the moment the power balance shifts between characters. Ninety per cent of strong answers are built around the star and the arrow.
It also helps to think in units and beats, an idea borrowed from Stanislavski-based rehearsal practice. A unit is a chunk of the scene with one objective; a beat is the smallest change of tactic inside it. When you can break the extract into units, you can answer "how would you perform this passage" with structure rather than guesswork.
5. Writing About Performance Skills: Voice, Movement, Gesture, Space |
The biggest single cause of low marks in drama writing is vagueness. "I would look sad" tells an examiner nothing. "I would drop my pitch and slow my pace on the final line, holding eye contact with the audience for three seconds before answering" tells them everything.
Use this checklist of controllable skills when you plan an answer:
- Voice / 声音: pitch, pace, pause, projection, tone, volume, accent, emphasis, breath.
- Movement / 形体: posture, gait, gesture, facial expression, stillness, tempo, energy, proxemics, levels, use of space.
- Interaction / 互动: eye contact, reaction, listening, status play, physical contact, use of props as extension of character.
Then attach every skill to an intention. The formula below is the one examiners see in almost every top-band paragraph, though the wording varies.
Skill + Specific Detail → Intention → Effect on Audience
Notice the third element is not optional. Drama is a live art form, and the examiner is always asking: so what did the audience get from it?
6. Design Questions: Set, Costume, Lighting, Sound |
Design questions frighten students who think of themselves as actors, but they are often the easiest marks on the paper because the answers are concrete and easy to justify. You do not need to be a technician; you need to explain what the audience sees and hears, and why.
- Set and props / 布景与道具: period, location, naturalism versus stylisation, sightlines, symbolic objects, entrances and exits.
- Set and props /
- Costume / 服装: status, colour, fabric, fit, age, historical accuracy, how it restricts or frees the actor's movement.
- Lighting / 灯光: colour, intensity, direction, gobo and shadow, blackout, fade, cross-fade, cue placement.
- Sound / 音响: diegetic sound from inside the world of the play, non-diegetic underscore, live effects, silence as a cue, volume and pre-set levels.
Always tie the design to the text. A red dress is meaningless unless you can point to the line, theme or social context that makes red the right choice, and unless you can say what the audience will infer about that character's power or vulnerability when she enters.
7. Structuring the Extended Response |
The extended response is where marks are won and lost in bulk. A clear structure protects you when you are nervous and helps the examiner find your best thinking quickly. A reliable four-move paragraph works like this:
Point → Text Evidence → Intention → Effect and Evaluation
Start each paragraph with a claim about the production, quote or reference the text to support it, state the directorial or performance intention, then evaluate the likely impact on the audience. Keep paragraphs to four or five sentences so that you can fit three or four of them into the time available.
Open with a short conceptual statement that shows you have a whole-production vision, for example a decision that the extract will be staged as heightened naturalism in a bare space, then let every paragraph serve that vision. Signpost with connectives such as "however", "therefore" and "as a result" so the argument reads as an argument rather than a list.
用 "however"、"therefore"、"as a result" 这类连接词做路标,让全文读起来是论证,而不是清单。
8. Command Words: Describe, Explain, Analyse, Evaluate |
Command words tell you how much thinking is required, and ignoring them caps your mark regardless of how good your drama knowledge is. A "describe" question needs only accurate detail; an "evaluate" question needs judgement and justification.
「describe(描述)」只需准确细节;「evaluate(评价)」则需要判断与论证。
| Command word / 指令词 | What it demands / 要求 |
|---|---|
| Describe / 描述 | Accurate detail of what is seen or heard / 准确写出看到或听到的细节 |
| Analyse / 分析 | Break down how and why the effect is created / 拆解效果是如何被制造出来的 |
| Evaluate / 评价 | Judge effectiveness and justify the judgement / 判断有效性并论证该判断 |
| Justify / 论证 | Support a decision with evidence and purpose / 用证据与目的支撑一个决定 |
If the question says "how would you", write in the conditional future, not in the past tense. Examiners are reading a plan for a production, not a review of one that has already happened.
9. Coursework: Solo, Scripted Group and Devised Performance |
Sixty per cent of the grade is practical, and it is assessed across three typical strands: a solo or monologue performance, a scripted group extract, and a devised piece created from a stimulus. Each strand rewards a different strength, so a weak area in one can be compensated in another.
- Solo / 单人表演: sustained concentration, vocal range, clarity of objective, ability to hold the audience alone.
- Scripted group / 有剧本小组: ensemble timing, listening, spatial awareness, shared style, generosity to partners.
- Scripted group /
- Devised / 创编: original ideas, structure, theatrical conventions and techniques used deliberately, clear artistic intention.
Assessment during rehearsal is often continuous rather than single-shot, so behaviour in the room matters: arriving prepared, offering ideas without dominating, accepting direction, and reflecting openly on what did not work. A polished final performance built on a disengaged process rarely reaches the top band.
10. The Devising Portfolio and Written Reflection |
Coursework is supported by written evidence of your process, which is where AO1 and AO3 marks are collected. This is not a diary. It is an argument about how an idea became a piece of theatre.
The strongest portfolios usually contain research into the context or theme, notes on the practitioners or conventions you drew on, evidence of decisions changed after rehearsal, and a final evaluation that is honest about what worked and specific about what you would do differently.
Avoid the trap of writing about your feelings only. "I felt the scene went well" earns nothing. Instead write that you slowed the final beat by two seconds, that this created an uncomfortable pause the audience filled with tension, and that in future you would place the same pause earlier to build the climax more gradually.
11. Common Mark-Losing Mistakes |
Most lost marks in IGCSE Drama come from a small number of repeated habits rather than from a lack of talent or effort. Fixing these is the fastest route to a band jump.
- Plot retelling / 复述情节: summarising what happens instead of analysing how it is staged.
- Plot retelling /
- Vague adjectives / 含糊形容词: "sad", "angry", "dramatic" with no stagecraft attached.
- Vague adjectives /
- No audience / 没有观众:never stating the intended effect on the people watching.
- Ignoring command words / 忽视指令词:describing when asked to evaluate, or evaluating when asked to describe.
- Ignoring command words /
- Unrealistic staging / 不可行的舞台设计:proposing effects a school theatre could never achieve.
- Unrealistic staging /
- Poor time management / 时间分配失控:spending twenty minutes on a five-mark question.
- Poor time management /
Notice that almost none of these are about knowledge. They are about precision, intention and discipline, which means they are entirely within your control.
12. Revision Routine and Exam-Day Timing |
Build a revision routine that exercises both halves of the subject. Read one play a fortnight, and for each play write a one-page production concept covering set, costume, lighting, sound and two key performance moments. This trains you to think like a director rather than a spectator.
Practise under timed conditions. Pick an extract you have not seen, give yourself twelve minutes, and write a full answer using the four-move paragraph structure. Then mark it against the command words: did you actually evaluate, or only describe?
On exam day, budget your time before you write anything. A practical plan is to spend the first five minutes reading and annotating the extract, then allocate roughly one minute per mark for short answers, and reserve the last quarter of the paper for the extended response, leaving three minutes at the end to check that every question has an answer and every claim has evidence.
