📚 IGCSE Cambridge Philosophy: High-Frequency Topics and Common Mistakes Analysis | IGCSE
In Cambridge IGCSE Philosophy, marks are won and lost in the way students move from describing a theory to testing it with examples. This article reviews the topics that appear most regularly in past papers and the common errors that separate a grade C from a grade A*.
The exam rewards three habits: defining terms precisely, giving one clear example for every claim, and always asking 'is this claim true?'. Every section below pairs a high-frequency topic with the misunderstanding that most often costs marks.
1. Defining Philosophy and Arguments |
Philosophy is the study of fundamental questions through reasoned argument, not a collection of personal opinions. In the exam, a high-frequency one-mark question asks students to define 'argument' as a series of premises leading to a conclusion. A strong definition separates the content of the belief from the logical structure that supports it.
Many candidates lose that simple mark by writing 'a reason' or 'an opinion someone gives' instead of 'a statement, or set of statements, offered as evidence for another statement'. 'Because I think so' is not an argument, and a list of facts is not an argument until a conclusion is drawn from them.
- Premise: a statement that provides support.
- Conclusion: the statement supported by the premises.
- Inference: the movement of thought from premises to conclusion.
A second common error is to think that disagreement makes a question unphilosophical. On the contrary, a question is philosophical precisely because rival answers can both be defended with reasons, and the examiner wants to see those reasons weighed.
2. Premises, Conclusions and Inference Indicators |
Not every passage is an argument, and examiners test this distinction early. Inference indicators tell you which sentence is doing which job: 'because', 'since', 'as', 'given that' and 'for' usually introduce a premise, while 'therefore', 'so', 'thus', 'hence', 'it follows that' and 'consequently' introduce the conclusion. The conclusion can appear first, in the middle, or last.
推论指示词告诉你哪一句在承担什么任务:because、since、as、given that、for 通常引出前提;therefore、so、thus、hence、it follows that、consequently 引出结论。
Two errors cost marks every session. The first is mistaking an explanation for an argument: 'He failed because he did not revise' explains a fact rather than arguing for a new conclusion. The second is treating commands and questions as premises, since commands such as 'Close the door' and questions such as 'Who really knows?' cannot be true or false, so they cannot support anything.
P₁, P₂, P₃ ∴ C (前提 ⇒ 结论)
A useful habit is to number the sentences of a short passage and label each one P or C before writing anything. Candidates who sketch the structure first rarely misidentify the main conclusion under exam pressure.
3. Deductive and Inductive Arguments: Validity and Soundness |
Validity and truth are different things, and confusing them is one of the most common errors at every grade boundary. An argument is valid when, if the premises were true, the conclusion would have to be true. Soundness adds the further requirement that the premises actually are true. Validity is a property of form rather than content, so an argument with false premises can still be perfectly valid.
The third pattern above is a formal fallacy (affirming the consequent) and is a favourite exam trap: 'If it is raining, the ground is wet; the ground is wet; therefore it is raining.' The premise may be true and the conclusion may happen to be true, yet the reasoning still fails.
Inductive arguments are judged as strong or weak, not valid or invalid. A common mistake is to criticise an inductive argument for not being valid, when induction only ever aims at probability. Hasty generalisation - moving from one or two cases to a universal claim - is the weakness examiners most often want discussed.
4. Common Fallacies and How Markers Spot Them | 常见谬误与评卷人如何识别
Questions on fallacies usually ask two things: name the flaw, and explain why it weakens the argument. Only the second part carries the higher marks, so a label alone is never enough.
- Ad hominem: attacking the person instead of the argument.
- Straw man: misrepresenting an opponent's view to make it easier to attack.
- False dilemma: presenting two options when more exist.
- Slippery slope: claiming one step must lead to an extreme result without support.
- Post hoc: assuming that because B followed A, A caused B.
- Circular reasoning: using the conclusion as one of its own premises.
- Appeal to authority or emotion: replacing evidence with prestige or feeling.
The most frequent mistake is accusing a sound argument of a fallacy simply because the candidate disagrees with its conclusion. A fallacy is a fault in the reasoning, not in the conclusion, and markers reward candidates who say so explicitly.
5. Knowledge: Justified True Belief |
The tripartite definition of knowledge is 'justified true belief' (JTB). Candidates are often asked to explain why justification is needed by considering a lucky guess: the guess may be true, but it is not knowledge because the believer has no good reason for it.
