📚 IGCSE WJEC Statistics: Speaking & Listening Exam Preparation | IGCSE WJEC

WJEC IGCSE Statistics does not include a formal speaking and listening examination paper. However, speaking and listening skills are embedded in statistical enquiry: you speak when you carry out interviews, explain a sampling method or present findings, and you listen when you collect data from audio sources, follow a teacher's dictation or take part in a group discussion. This guide gives targeted, exam-relevant practice for these transferable skills.

WJEC IGCSE

1. Why Speaking and Listening Matter in Statistics |

Strong oral communication helps you ask unbiased survey questions, explain why you chose a particular sample, and describe the shape of a distribution. When you can say a statistical idea clearly in one sentence, you can usually write it clearly under timed exam conditions.

oud, when you conduct an interview, or when you discuss results with a partner. Mishearing 'n = 15' as 'n = 50' changes the entire conclusion, the mean, and the interpretation of the investigation.

Treat speaking and listening as a revision method, not as extra content. Every sentence you say out loud about a graph is a sentence you have already rehearsed for the written paper.

2. Understanding the WJEC IGCSE Statistics Assessment | 了解 WJEC IGCSE 统计评估

The WJEC IGCSE Statistics assessment is written, focusing on collecting data, representing data, probability, and interpretation. Speaking and listening are not separately awarded marks, but they are useful for internal tasks and for improving the quality of your written reasoning.

WJEC IGCSE

Typical written questions ask you to describe a sampling method, complete a table, draw or read a chart, calculate an average, find a probability, or comment on a statement using statistical evidence. Each of those tasks has an oral twin: saying the method, describing the table, reading the chart, explaining the average, stating the probability, and justifying the comment.

Always check the current specification and your own centre's scheme of work, because the internal tasks set by schools vary. Some centres run group investigations, some run short presentations, and some use peer questioning to check understanding.

3. Speaking: Explaining Your Sample and Method |

The most common oral task in statistics is explaining how you would collect data. A good spoken answer names the population, the sampling frame, the sampling method, the sample size, and one strength or weakness.

Practise these four sampling methods until you can describe each one in two sentences:

For stratified sampling you should be able to state the proportional allocation rule out loud and then apply it:

nᵢ = (Nᵢ ÷ N) × n

ts and you want a sample of 60, a year group of 150 students contributes 150 ÷ 600 × 60 = 15 students.

A spoken evaluation sentence is worth rehearsing: "Stratified sampling is better here because the strata differ in their opinions, so a proportional sample gives a more representative result than a simple random sample of the same size."

4. Listening: Collecting Data from Audio and Instructions |

Listening in statistics is not passive. You must extract numbers, units, categories and conditions from what you hear, then record them accurately enough to analyse later.

Three listening situations appear again and again in statistics lessons:

A simple habit improves all three: after listening, say the data back before you use it. If you cannot repeat a number, you probably misheard it.

5. Describing Graphs, Averages and Spread Out Loud |

Exam questions on interpretation are marked like a spoken description: shape, centre, spread, outlier, then context. Rehearse this four-step script until it is automatic.

Step one, shape: "The distribution is positively skewed because the tail extends to the right." Step two, centre: "The median is about 24 minutes." Step three, spread: "The interquartile range is about 11 minutes." Step four, context: "So most students take between 19 and 30 minutes, with a few taking much longer."

Keep the definitions you need ready in words and in symbols:

Sponsored

Mean: x̄ = Σx ÷ n   |   IQR = Q₃ − Q₁   |   Range = maximum − minimum

Outlier if value > Q₃ + 1.5 × IQR  or  value < Q₁ − 1.5 × IQR

For a data set with an outlier, the spoken comparison is precise: "The mean is pulled up by the outlier, so the median is the better measure of a typical value here."

When you describe a histogram, always mention class width: "The modal class is 10 to 20 with frequency 18; the class widths are all 10, so the tallest bar is also the modal class."

6. Designing Unbiased Survey Questions for Interviews |

If you ever interview a respondent, your question wording decides the quality of your data. A leading question plants the answer; a double-barrelled question asks two things at once; an ambiguous question is interpreted differently by different people.

Compare these two versions out loud:

Also rehearse the practical questions: who is in your population, how will you select the sample, how many people will you ask, and when and where will you record the responses. Saying these out loud before you start prevents a biased or unrepresentative sample.

7. Listening Accuracy: Numbers, Units and Mishearing |

Most statistical mishearing is not random. It clusters around a small set of confusable pairs, especially in English where 'fifteen' and 'fifty' differ mainly in stress.

Heard as / 听成Actually said / 实际所说Effect on analysis / 对分析的影响
n = 50n = 15Every relative frequency is wrong / 所有相对频数都错了
1.515The outlier boundary moves tenfold /
0.150.50The probability estimate is unreliable /
13 - 1930 - 19The class interval becomes impossible /
centimetresmillimetresValues are out by a factor of ten / 数值相差十倍

Three habits fix almost all of this. First, write the number down immediately, in a ruled table, before writing anything else. Second, repeat the value back to the speaker when the setting allows it. Third, sanity-check after listening: if the mean of heights comes out as 1620 cm, you have almost certainly misheard the unit.

8. Speaking About Probability and Risk |

Probability is the topic where spoken language is sloppiest and where precision earns marks. Say what the probability is, what it is a fraction of, and what it does not mean.

Use the standard vocabulary deliberately: impossible, unlikely, evens, likely, certain. Convert fluently between forms, because a written question may demand any of them:

P(event) = number of favourable outcomes ÷ total number of outcomes

Expected frequency = P(event) × number of trials

Relative frequency from data is an estimate, not a guarantee. A careful spoken sentence sounds like this: " atch of 5000 we would expect about 300 faulty items, assuming the process has not changed."

tion rule: P(not A) = 1 − P(A), and for mutually exclusive events P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B).

最后,演练补事件与加法法则:P(非 A) = 1 − P(A);对互斥事件,P(A 或 B) = P(A) + P(B)。

9. Internal Tasks, Group Work and Presentations |

Many WJEC centres set internal statistical tasks that involve discussion and presentation, even though these carry no separate oral marks. A short, well-structured presentation is the best rehearsal for the written evaluation questions.

A 90-second presentation should follow a fixed order: aim of the investigation, population and sample, method and instruments, key results with numbers, one limitation, one improvement.

When you are the listener, ask clarifying questions rather than contradicting: "How many people did you actually ask?" "Were the class widths equal?" "What was the question wording?" These are exactly the questions that unlock evaluation marks in the exam.

Group work also trains reliability: if two of you code the same interview recording independently and then compare tallies, you have a simple check on consistency.

10. A Six-Week Practice Routine |

Short, frequent oral practice beats long, rare sessions. Twenty minutes, three times a week, is enough to make the vocabulary automatic.
