📚 IGCSE WJEC Philosophy Unit Test Mock Paper Walkthrough | IGCSE WJEC 哲学单元测试模拟卷解析
This walkthrough explains how to approach a typical IGCSE WJEC Philosophy unit mock paper, including question types, model answers, and examiner advice.
本解析将说明如何应对典型的 IGCSE WJEC 哲学单元模拟卷,包括题型、参考答案和考官建议。
1. Exam Structure and Question Types | 考试结构与题型
The paper usually contains three sections: Section A tests key concepts with short answers (2-4 marks), Section B asks for explanations (6 marks), and Section C requires evaluation (12 marks). A standard unit test runs for about 60 minutes and carries roughly 40-50 marks, so the weighting tells you immediately where the marks really live.
试卷通常分为三个部分:A 部分考查关键概念的简答题(2-4 分),B 部分要求解释(6 分),C 部分要求评价(12 分)。一次标准单元测试约 60 分钟、总分约 40-50 分,因此分值分布本身就直接告诉你分数真正集中在哪里。
Section A: definitions, identification and brief outline. Fast marks, short answers, no padding.
A 部分:定义、识别与简要概述。拿分快、答案短,不要注水。
Section B: explanation with reasons, causes or mechanisms, usually supported by an example.
B 部分:解释题,需要说明原因、理由或机制,通常要配一个例子。
Section C: extended evaluation with arguments for and against, plus a justified conclusion.
C 部分:长篇评价题,需要正反论点,并给出有理由支撑的结论。
Before writing anything, read the whole paper and mark the three sections clearly. Many students lose more marks through misreading the command word than through not knowing the content.
动笔之前,先把整份试卷读完,并把三个部分清楚标出来。很多学生丢分不是因为不会内容,而是因为看错了指令词。
2. Command Words and Mark Tariffs | 指令词与评分标准
Command words such as "define", "explain" and "evaluate" are not interchangeable. "Define" wants a precise meaning; "explain" wants causes, reasons or mechanisms; "evaluate" wants arguments for and against plus a justified judgement. The mark tariff is your best clue about the depth expected.
指令词如 "define"、"explain" 和 "evaluate" 不可互换。"define" 要求给出准确含义;"explain" 要求说明原因、理由或机制;"evaluate" 要求写出正反论点并给出有理有据的判断。分值是你判断需要写多深的最佳线索。
| Command word | 中文 | What to do | 答题要求 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Define | 定义 | Give a precise, one-or-two-sentence meaning; do not explain origins. | 用一两句给出准确含义,不要讲起源或历史。 |
| Describe | 描述 | Say what something is or what happens, without needing reasons. | 说明"是什么"或"发生了什么",不必给理由。 |
| Explain | 解释 | Give causes, reasons or mechanisms, using "because", "this means that". | 给出原因、理由或机制,用"因为""这意味着"推进。 |
| Compare | 比较 | Give both similarities and differences, with a point of contact between them. | 既写相同点也写不同点,并说明两者在哪一点上可比。 |
| Analyse | 分析 | Break a claim into parts and show how the parts support or undermine it. | 把论点拆成若干部分,说明各部分如何支持或削弱它。 |
| Evaluate | 评价 | Weigh strengths and weaknesses, then reach a justified conclusion. | 权衡优缺点,最后得出有理由支撑的结论。 |
| Justify | 论证 / 辩护 | Defend one side against the strongest objection you can name. | 站定一方,并对你能想到的最强反驳作出回应。 |
A quick rule of thumb for tariffs is worth memorising:
值得记住的分值经验法则如下:
+ 2 explanations · 6 marks = 3 developed points · 12 marks = balanced argument + judgement
2 分 = 2 个独立要点 · 4 分 = 2 个要点 + 2 层解释 · 6 分 = 3 个展开论点 · 12 分 = 正反兼顾 + 明确判断
3. Section A: Short-Answer Concepts | A 部分:概念简答题
Section A rewards precision and punishes waffle. If a question is worth 2 marks, the examiner is looking for two separate pieces of accurate information. A definition plus one clarifying clause is usually enough. Writing four sentences for 2 marks wastes time you need in Section C.
A 部分奖励精确、惩罚废话。如果一道题只有 2 分,考官要找的是两个彼此独立且准确的信息点。一个定义加一句限定说明通常就够了。为 2 分的题写四句话,会浪费你在 C 部分需要的时间。
Typical Section A tasks include defining "omnipotence", "omnibenevolence", "the problem of evil", "the cosmological argument", "the design argument", "free will", "the soul", "dualism", "materialism", "euthanasia", "sanctity of life" and "quality of life". These are technical terms, so the exam expects technical wording.
A 部分常见任务是定义"全能""全善""恶的问题""宇宙论论证""设计论证""自由意志""灵魂""二元论""唯物论""安乐死""生命神圣性""生命质量"等。这些是专业术语,所以考试期望你使用专业表述。
Two habits turn average Section A answers into full-mark answers. First, never use the word you are defining inside the definition. Second, where a term has a standard contrast, name it: dualism against materialism, sanctity of life against quality of life, theism against atheism.
两个习惯能把 A 部分从平庸变成满分。第一,定义中绝不使用被定义的那个词本身。第二,如果某个术语有标准对立面,就点出来:二元论对唯物论、生命神圣性对生命质量、有神论对无神论。
4. Section B: Building a Six-Mark Explanation | B 部分:打造 6 分解释题
A 6-mark explanation question is almost always marked on a level-based or point-plus-development basis. The safest structure is three developed points, each of which follows the same internal pattern: statement, reason, consequence or example.
6 分的解释题几乎总是按等级评分或"要点 + 展开"评分。最稳妥的结构是三个展开要点,每个要点内部都遵循同一模式:陈述、理由、结果或例子。
Statement: name the point clearly in one sentence.
陈述:用一句话清楚点出论点。
Reason: say why it is the case, using "because" or "since".
理由:用"因为""由于"说明它为何成立。
Consequence or example: show what follows, or illustrate with a concrete case.
结果或例子:说明它带来什么后果,或用具体例子加以说明。
Common Section B stems include "Explain why the problem of evil challenges belief in an omnipotent and omnibenevolent God", "Explain how the design argument uses the appearance of order in nature" and "Explain why some philosophers reject the view that the mind is identical with the brain".
B 部分常见题干包括:"解释恶的问题为何对全能全善的上帝的信仰构成挑战""解释设计论证如何运用自然中的秩序现象""解释为什么一些哲学家反对心灵与大脑同一的观点"。
Never answer an "explain" question with a list. A list of five undeveloped points usually scores lower than three points each followed by a real reason.
绝不要用清单来回答"解释"类题目。五个没有展开的要点,通常比三个各自附带真实理由的要点得分更低。
5. Section C: Evaluation That Actually Evaluates | C 部分:真正在"评价"的评价题
The 12-mark question is where grades are made and lost. Evaluation does not mean "say some things for and some things against". It means weighing arguments and deciding which side is stronger, on stated grounds.
12 分题是分数被拉开的地方。评价并不意味着"说一些支持的、再说一些反对的"。评价是指权衡各论点,并根据明确给出的标准判断哪一方更强。
A reliable 12-mark shape looks like this:
一套可靠的 12 分答题结构如下:
One or two paragraphs setting out the strongest argument for the claim.
用一到两段摆出支持该主张的最强论证。
One or two paragraphs setting out the strongest argument against it.
用一到两段摆出反对该主张的最强论证。
A paragraph weighing them: which assumption is more plausible, which evidence is more reliable, which consequence is more acceptable.
用一段进行权衡:哪个前提更可信、哪类证据更可靠、哪种后果更可接受。
A conclusion that picks a side and states the criterion on which the choice rests.
结论要明确站边,并说明这一选择依据的标准是什么。
Sitting on the fence is the single most common reason for stopping at the middle band. "Both sides have good points" is not a conclusion; it is a description of the question.
骑墙是停留在中间档位最常见的唯一原因。"双方都有道理"不是结论,那只是对题目的描述。
Useful evaluative criteria in this specification include internal consistency, explanatory power, whether the argument relies on an unproven assumption, whether it proves too much, and whether it survives its classic counterexample. Name the criterion explicitly, and the examiner will read your judgement as reasoned rather than asserted.
本考纲中常用的评价标准包括:内部一致性、解释力、论证是否依赖未经证明的前提、论证是否"证明得太多",以及它能否经受住经典反例。明确说出你所用的标准,考官就会把你的判断读作"有推理的"而非"硬下结论的"。
6. Model Answers Compared | 参考答案对比
Below is a 6-mark question with a mid-band and a top-band answer, followed by a 12-mark conclusion that shows the difference between asserting and justifying.
下面是一道 6 分题的中档答案与高分答案对比,随后是一道 12 分题的结论部分,展示"下结论"与"论证结论"的区别。
Question: Explain why the problem of evil challenges belief in an omnipotent and omnibenevolent God. (6 marks)
题目:解释恶的问题为何对全能全善的上帝的信仰构成挑战。(6 分)
Mid-band answer: "There is evil in the world. God is meant to be all-powerful and all-good. So evil is a problem for God." This gives three vague statements without a chain of reasoning, so it stays low.
中档答案:"世界上存在恶。上帝应当是全能全善的。所以恶对上帝来说是个问题。"这只是三句模糊陈述,没有推理链条,因此分数偏低。
Top-band answer: "First, if God is omnipotent, he has the power to prevent any evil; if he is omnibenevolent, he has the motive to prevent it. Second, following the logical form of the problem, an omnipotent, omnibenevolent being would always eliminate evil, so the existence of any evil appears to contradict the existence of such a being. Third, the evidential form argues that the sheer amount and distribution of suffering, especially apparently pointless animal and infant suffering, makes it unlikely rather than impossible that such a being exists."
高分答案:"第一,如果上帝全能,他就有能力阻止任何恶;如果他全善,他就有动机去阻止。第二,按该问题的逻辑形式,全能全善者必然会消除恶,因此任何恶的存在似乎都与这种存在者的存在相矛盾。第三,其证据形式主张,苦难的数量与分布——尤其看似毫无意义的动物与婴儿苦难——使得这种存在者的存在变得不太可能,而非逻辑上不可能。"
12-mark conclusion example: "On balance, the design argument supports theism but does not prove it. Its strength is explanatory: order is genuinely more likely on the hypothesis of a designer than on chance alone. Its weakness is that Hume's appeal to infinite time and finite observation shows we cannot infer the nature or unity of that designer, and Darwinian natural selection now offers a rival explanation of apparent design. Because the argument survives as a reasonable support but not as a proof, the claim that it proves God exists should be rejected."
12 分题结论示例:"总体而言,设计论证支持有神论,但并不能证明有神论。它的优势在解释力:与纯属偶然相比,秩序在设计者假说下确实更可能出现。它的弱点在于,休谟诉诸无限时间与有限观察表明,我们无法推出该设计者的性质或统一性;而达尔文式的自然选择如今也为表面的设计提供了竞争性解释。由于该论证能作为合理支持而成立、却不能作为证明成立,因此'它证明了上帝存在'这一主张应被否定。"
Notice that the top-band answers use names, structure and explicit reasoning. Length is not the deciding factor; the deciding factor is whether the reader can see why each sentence follows from the previous one.
请注意,高分答案使用了人名、结构和显性推理。字数不是决定因素,决定因素是读者能否看出每一句如何由前一句推出。
7. Core Content Areas on the Specification | 考纲核心内容领域
Unit tests are drawn from a defined set of philosophical themes, and the same themes recycle across mock papers. Knowing the map of the specification stops you from revising randomly.
单元测试取材于一套既定的哲学主题,而这些主题在模拟卷中反复出现。掌握考纲的"地图",你就不会盲目复习。
| Theme | 中文 | Typical exam focus | 常见考查重点 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arguments for God | 上帝存在的论证 | Cosmological, teleological, ontological; strength and counterexamples | 宇宙论、目的论、本体论;强度与反例 |
| Problem of evil | 恶的问题 | Logical vs evidential form; theodicies and their limits | 逻辑形式与证据形式;神正论及其局限 |
| Mind and body | 心与身 | Dualism, materialism, personal identity | 二元论、唯物论、人格同一性 |
| Life after death | 死后生命 | Evidence claimed, coherence of disembodied existence | 所主张的证据、无形存在是否自洽 |
| Ethics and life issues | 伦理与生命议题 | Sanctity vs quality of life, autonomy, euthanasia | 生命神圣性与生命质量、自主、安乐死 |
Every one of these themes can appear in all three sections. The same topic that gives you a 2-mark definition in Section A may return as a 12-mark evaluation in Section C.
以上每个主题都可能出现在三个部分中。A 部分给你 2 分定义的同一话题,可能在 C 部分以 12 分评价题的形式再次出现。
8. Using Philosophical Terms and Thinkers Accurately | 准确使用哲学术语与思想家观点
Mark schemes reward accurate attribution. Naming Hume, Paley, Aquinas, Descartes, Plato, Mill or Kant earns credit only when the view you attach to them is genuinely theirs and is used to do work in your argument.
评分方案奖励准确的归属。提到休谟、佩利、阿奎那、笛卡尔、柏拉图、密尔或康德,只有在所附观点确实属于他们、并且被用来推进你的论证时才得分。
Safe attributions worth memorising include: Paley's watch analogy for the design argument; Hume's critique of analogical inference and his Dialogues; Aquinas' Five Ways and the cosmological route; Descartes' mind-body dualism and the doubt method; Plato's theory of Forms and the soul; Mill's harm principle and qualitative utilitarianism; Kant's emphasis on duty and universalisability.
值得记住的安全归属包括:佩利的钟表类比用于设计论证;休谟对类比推理的批判及其《自然宗教对话录》;阿奎那的五路论证与宇宙论路径;笛卡尔的心身二元论与怀疑方法;柏拉图的理念论与灵魂观;密尔的伤害原则与质的功利主义;康德对义务与可普遍化的强调。
Two errors damage an otherwise strong answer. The first is name-dropping: "As Kant said, this is wrong" without saying what Kant's argument was. The second is inventing: there is no "Hume's free will defence", and there is no "Paley's problem of evil".
两个错误会毁掉一篇本来很强的答案。第一是"堆名字":"正如康德所说,这是错的",却不说明康德的论证是什么。第二是编造:并不存在"休谟的自由意志辩护",也不存在"佩利的恶的问题"。
Define technical terms the first time you use them in a paper, even if you used them in Section A. It costs five seconds and protects you from an examiner who is unsure whether you understand the term.
在试卷中第一次使用术语时就把它们定义清楚,哪怕你在 A 部分已经用过。这只需五秒,却能避免考官无法确定你是否真正理解该术语。
9. Common Mistakes and Examiner Advice | 常见失分点与考官建议
Examiners repeatedly report the same handful of avoidable errors. None of them is about intelligence; all of them are about technique.
考官反复报告的总是那几个可以避免的错误。它们与智力无关,全都与技巧有关。
Answering the question you hoped for rather than the one printed. Underline the command word and the key noun before you plan.
回答你"希望考到"的题,而不是卷面上印的题。动笔规划前先划出指令词和关键词。
Writing a full essay for a 6-mark question and leaving no time for the 12-mark question.
为 6 分题写满一篇长文,结果没时间做 12 分题。
Giving an evaluation with no conclusion, or a conclusion that does not follow from the arguments given.
写了评价却没有结论,或结论与前面给出的论证不衔接。
Using everyday meanings of words like "argument" (quarrel), "soul" (feeling) or "good" (nice).
用日常语义理解 "argument"(吵架)、"soul"(情感)、"good"(不错)等词。
Illustrating a point with an example that does not actually illustrate it. Test every example by asking what it is meant to prove.
用例子说明论点,但例子其实说明不了它。检验每个例子时问一句:它想证明什么?
The most repeated single piece of examiner advice is this: answer the mark tariff, not your feelings about the topic. A 2-mark question does not want your opinion, and a 12-mark question does not want only definitions.
考官重复最多的一条建议是:按分值作答,而不是按你对这个话题的情绪作答。2 分的题不需要你的观点,12 分的题也不只需要定义。
10. Timing and Mock Paper Strategy | 时间分配与模拟卷策略
Time is allocated roughly in proportion to marks. In a 60-minute paper worth 45 marks, that means about 1.3 minutes per mark: approximately 15 minutes for Section A, 15 minutes for Section B, 25 minutes for Section C and 5 minutes for planning and checking.
时间大致按分值比例分配。在一份 60 分钟、45 分的试卷中,约合每分 1.3 分钟:A 部分约 15 分钟,B 部分约 15 分钟,C 部分约 25 分钟,另留 5 分钟用于规划与检查。
Time per mark ≈ Total time ÷ Total marks · 每分时间 ≈ 总时间 ÷ 总分
Plan the 12-mark answer for two minutes. A five-line plan naming your for-side, against-side and criterion will make the writing faster, not slower, because you stop re-deciding mid-paragraph.
为 12 分答案留出两分钟做规划。用五行写下支持方、反对方和评价标准,会让写作更快而不是更慢,因为你不会在写到一半时反复改主意。
When practising a full mock, mark your own paper using the published mark scheme before looking at any model answer. Self-marking exposes the gap between what you intended and what a stranger would read, and that gap is exactly what costs marks.
做完整套模拟卷后,先不要看参考答案,而要用公开的评分方案给自己打分。自评会暴露出"你想表达的内容"和"他人读到的内容"之间的差距,而这个差距正是丢分之处。
11. Mark Scheme Language and Level Descriptors | 评分方案语言与等级描述
The level descriptors used for extended answers describe the structure of your thinking, not the quantity of your writing. Learning to translate them is a genuine revision technique.
用于长篇答案的等级描述,描述的是你思维的结构,而不是写作的数量。学会"翻译"这些措辞本身就是一种复习技巧。
| Descriptor phrase | 中文 | What it means in practice | 实际含义 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited understanding | 理解有限 | Terms used loosely, few or no reasons given. | 术语使用松散,几乎没有给出理由。 |
| Clear understanding | 理解清晰 | Accurate terms with developed reasons; both sides present. | 术语准确、理由有展开;正反双方都写到。 |
| Well-argued judgement | 论证充分的判断 | A stated criterion, a weighed comparison and a defended conclusion. | 明确标准、进行比较权衡、结论有辩护。 |
Phrases such as "coherent line of reasoning", "sustained argument" and "well-chosen examples" are instructions. If your answer has none of those features, no amount of extra paragraphs will lift the band.
"连贯的推理线索""持续的论证""选择恰当的例子"这类措辞其实是操作指令。如果你的答案不具备这些特征,写再多段落也无法提升档位。
12. Final Checklist Before You Start Writing | 动笔前的最终检查清单
Run through this checklist in the first two minutes of the exam. It takes almost no time and it converts a vague sense of the paper into a plan.
在考试最初的几分钟内过一遍这份清单。它几乎不花时间,却能把你对试卷的模糊感觉转化为一份计划。
