Accuracy in pronunciation earns marks, so drill the sounds English speakers find hardest: ch, ü, ö, r, and the difference between z and ts. Ten minutes of shadowing a native recording per day is more effective than an hour of silent reading.

Translation into German is a separate mark trap. Check three things on every sentence: the verb in position two, the correct article, and the correct tense. A two-minute proofreading routine, reading your answer backwards word by word, catches most agreement and capitalisation slips.
