1. Understanding WJEC History and the IGCSE Label | 理解 WJEC 历史与 IGCSE 名称
WJEC (Welsh Joint Education Committee) offers GCSE History, not a separately branded IGCSE. However, many international schools describe the qualification as "IGCSE WJEC History" because it is a GCSE-level History course delivered outside the UK. Universities treat WJEC GCSE History and CIE/Edexcel IGCSE History as equivalent when assessing secondary-level achievement.
In Wales, WJEC GCSE History is usually graded A*-G. In England, the WJEC-owned brand Eduqas offers GCSE History graded 9-1. Both are accepted by UK universities, and admissions teams use standard equivalences to compare them with other boards.
2. Do Universities Require GCSE/IGCSE History? | 大学是否要求 GCSE/IGCSE 历史？
For most UK degree courses, GCSE/IGCSE History is not a universal requirement. The compulsory requirements are usually English Language and Mathematics, plus A-level History or an equivalent for history degrees. GCSE/IGCSE History is best seen as a recommended subject that strengthens evidence of essay writing, source handling and analytical thinking.
Some competitive courses, such as Law, Politics and International Relations, do not require History at GCSE, but they value essay-based subjects. A strong WJEC History grade can therefore help an application even when the subject is not formally required.
3. Top UK Universities: History Degree Requirements Compared |
The table below summarises typical entry requirements for History BA degrees. It is not exhaustive and you must check the university website for the latest information.
| University | GCSE/IGCSE History required? | Typical minimum English & Maths | WJEC History note |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Oxford | No, but useful | English Language and Maths at 4/C | WJEC A*-B (or 9-6) is competitive; A-level History required |
| University of Cambridge | No specific requirement | English Language and Maths at 4/C | High overall GCSE profile expected; A-level History strongly preferred |
| LSE | No specific requirement | English Language and Maths at 6/B | Strong GCSE profile valued; A-level History required |
| UCL | No specific requirement | English Language and Maths at 5/C | A-level History required; WJEC GCSE accepted |
| King's College London | No specific requirement | English Language at 6/B | A-level History required; essay skills valued |
| Durham University | No specific requirement | English Language and Maths at 4/C | A-level History required |
| University of St Andrews | No specific requirement | English Language and Maths at 4/C | A-level History required |
| University of Edinburgh | No specific requirement | English Language at 4/C | A-level History required |
| University of Warwick | No specific requirement | English Language and Maths at 4/C | A-level History preferred |
| University of Bristol | No specific requirement | English Language and Maths at 4/C | A-level History required |
For WJEC students, a key message is that GCSE/IGCSE History is rarely the deciding factor. The essential requirement for competitive history degrees is A-level History or an equivalent qualification, with strong grades in essay-based subjects.
4. WJEC Grading and 9-1 Equivalences | WJEC
Because WJEC in Wales still uses A*-G for many GCSEs, applicants sometimes worry about how their grades compare with the 9-1 scale used in England. The table below shows the standard equivalences used by many UK universities.
