📚 OxfordAQA 9620 CH01 January 2022 Examiner Report: Key Takeaways | OxfordAQA 9620 CH01 2022
The OxfordAQA International AS Chemistry Unit 1 (CH01) paper sat in January 2022 examined core physical and inorganic topics, including atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, periodicity, Group 2, Group 7, energetics, kinetics, equilibria and redox. The examiner report reveals that many marks were lost through avoidable errors in presentation, significant figures and state symbols rather than through a lack of subject knowledge.
The recurring message of the report is simple: candidates who understand the chemistry but do not answer the question asked, or who present their working carelessly, hand back marks they had already earned. This article unpacks the report section by section and turns each comment into an actionable revision habit.
1. Command Words and Marking Philosophy |
The January 2022 report stressed that command words determine exactly what the examiner expects. 'State' requires no explanation, 'deduce' requires using given information, and 'justify' requires a reason connected to evidence or chemical principles.
Many candidates wrote long descriptions for questions that only asked for a single term or value. This wastes time that should be spent on later questions and, more seriously, it often introduces a contradiction that cancels an otherwise correct answer. A mark scheme for a 'state' question accepts one word; extra words that contradict it can cost the mark.
| Command word | What the examiner requires |
| State / Give | A single term, value or formula. No reason needed. | |
| Deduce | Use the information supplied in the question, not prior knowledge alone. | |
| Describe | Say what happens - observation or trend only, no cause. | |
| Explain | Give a cause-and-effect link, usually joined by 'because'. |
| Justify | Support the answer with evidence from data or chemical principle. | |
| Suggest | Offer a chemically reasonable answer not necessarily on a standard mark scheme. | |
| Calculate | Show working; the final answer carries the mark and must be rounded sensibly. | |
Where a question carries more than one mark for an explanation, the report reminds candidates that each mark corresponds to a separate point of chemistry. Two identical sentences rephrased score once, not twice. Build explanations as a chain: state the factor, state the consequence, then link the consequence to the observation.
2. Presentation: The Hidden Source of Lost Marks |
The report is blunt about presentation: examiners can only award credit for what they can read and find. Answers squeezed into margins, work written over the printed question, or continuations placed in the wrong part of the paper may never be seen by the marker, even when the chemistry is perfect.
Candidates are advised to write in black or blue ink for written answers, use a pencil for structures, graphs and diagrams, and always label diagrams fully. Any work that is not to be marked should be crossed out with a single clean line - not scribbled over, and not left alongside a replacement answer in the hope that the examiner will pick the better one.
- Do not write two alternative answers. If one is wrong, the mark can be lost even though the other is correct. ——
- Keep units next to values. A correct number without a unit, or with the wrong unit, may not score. ——
- Write in the space provided and use the continuation pages only when the question directs you there.
- Show every step of a calculation, including the formula before substitution. ——
- Correct an error by crossing it out once and rewriting clearly nearby. ——
Legibility also matters in mechanistic and structural work. A careless H₂O written as HO, or a superscript charge that is unreadable, changes the chemistry and therefore the mark. Slow down for the half-dozen lines per paper that carry the most marks.
3. Significant Figures and Rounding |
Significant figures were one of the most frequently flagged issues in the report. A chemically correct final value that is rounded to the wrong number of significant figures can still lose the final answer mark, and intermediate rounding carried through a multi-step calculation produces a value that does not match the mark scheme at all.
The working rule is straightforward: keep full calculator precision through every intermediate step, and round only the final answer, normally to the same number of significant figures as the least precise piece of data given in the question. Where the question specifies a number of decimal places - common in pH and titration questions - follow that instruction exactly.
| Data given in the question | Reported final answer | Comment
| 25.0 cm³ of 0.100 mol dm⁻³ | 2.50 × 10⁻³ mol | 3 sf, matching the data. |
| 25.0 cm³ of 0.100 mol dm⁻³ | 0.0025 mol | Only 2 sf - may not score. |
| pH of 0.0100 mol dm⁻³ acid | 2.00 | 2 dp, matching 2 sf of concentration. |
| Titre = 24.35 cm³, M = 0.100 mol dm⁻³ | 2.44 × 10⁻³ mol | 3 sf is the sensible limit. 3 |
| Any multi-step enthalpy calculation | Round once, at the end | Never round intermediate moles or energies. |
ndidate has not thought about the precision of the measurement. A burette reading is reliable to about ±0.05 cm³; a thermometer to about ±0.5 °C. Your answer cannot be more precise than the apparatus that produced the data.
4. Equations, Formulae and State Symbols |
The report notes that equations were frequently left unbalanced, written with incorrect formulae, or presented without state symbols where the question required them. These are not advanced skills; they are the easiest marks on the paper and the most commonly thrown away.
Before writing any equation, check four things: correct formulae for every species, correct balancing, correct state symbols when asked, and correct charges on all ions. For ionic equations, spectator ions must be removed; for half-equations, electrons must appear on the correct side with the correct number.
Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl₂(aq) + H₂(g)
Cl₂(g) + 2NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + NaClO(aq) + H₂O(l)
Cl₂(aq) + 2I⁻(aq) → 2Cl⁻(aq) + I₂(aq)
- State symbols: (s), (l), (g) and (aq) are not decoration - in a redox or Group 7 question they carry the mark.
- Polyatomic ions: write SO₄²⁻, NO₃⁻, CO₃²⁻ and NH₄⁺ with correct charges every time.
- Half-equations: balance atoms first, then oxygen with H₂O, then hydrogen with H⁺, then charge with electrons.
- Reverse the sign when reversing a half-equation. ——
Disproportionation deserves particular attention because it appears in both Group 7 and redox questions. In the reaction of chlorine with cold dilute sodium hydroxide, chlorine is simultaneously oxidised (from 0 to +1 in NaClO) and reduced (from 0 to -1 in NaCl). Students who can state the two oxidation numbers confidently rarely lose these marks.
5. Atomic Structure and Amount of Substance |
In atomic structure questions the report highlights definition marks lost through omissions rather than errors. The definition of first ionisation energy must include 'one mole of gaseous atoms', 'each losing one electron' and 'forming one mole of gaseous 1+ ions'. Miss out 'gaseous' and the mark goes.
Electron configurations must respect the filling order and the 4s/3d crossover: 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s² 3d⁶ for iron, or the shorthand [Ar] 3d⁶ 4s². When explaining trends in ionisation energy, the report stresses that candidates must refer to nuclear charge, atomic radius or shielding in a comparative way, not simply state that 'the electron is harder to remove'.
Amount-of-substance calculations remain the backbone of the paper. The three conversions below account for a very large share of the marks in CH01.
