📚 AQA A-Level Chemistry June 2022 CH05 Examiner Report: Key Themes and Exam Tips | AQA A-Level
Every year, the AQA A-level Chemistry examiner report gives teachers and students a detailed picture of where candidates gained and lost marks. The June 2022 CH05 report is especially useful because it followed two disrupted years; it shows how well students adapted to full papers with advance information. In this article, we pull out the most important messages from the report and turn them into practical revision and exam-technique advice, section by section, with bilingual explanations for each point.
1. Context and Purpose of the June 2022 CH05 Report | 2022 年 6 月 CH05 报告背景与目的
The CH05 report covers the AQA A-level Chemistry examinations sat in June 2022. It is written by the senior examining team after reviewing a large sample of scripts from across the whole cohort. The report is not a second mark scheme: it does not restate acceptable answers in full. Instead it describes the patterns the team observed - which questions discriminated well, where credit was commonly lost, and what the strongest answers had in common. The June 2022 series was significant because candidates had not sat a full external examination series for two years, and this was the first paper taken alongside published advance information. Examiners therefore commented not only on chemistry knowledge but also on how candidates used, and sometimes misused, that published information.
2. Advance Information: What It Did and Did Not Do | 预发布重点信息:作用与局限
Advance information for summer 2022 was published so that teachers and candidates could prioritise revision after two disrupted years. In chemistry it took the form of a list of topics or sub-topics that would be assessed. The examiner report makes the boundaries of that information clear. It told candidates which content would appear; it did not say how that content would be examined, how many marks each idea would carry, or how demanding the question would be. Candidates who revised the listed topics at a shallow level - learning one definition or one colour change - often stalled when a question asked them to link that topic to earlier work, apply it to unfamiliar data, or explain an observation in terms of particles or energy. The message is simple: use advance information as a revision checklist, never as a substitute for the whole specification.
- Checklist use: tick off each listed topic only after you can answer past-paper questions on it unaided.
- Whole-spec coverage: keep revising unlisted areas, because synoptic links were where the strongest candidates gained ground.
- Demand, not content: practise the command words and the number of marks, not just the topic title.
The report repeatedly illustrates how marks are distributed across the three assessment objectives, and how candidates who prepare only for AO1 lose significant credit. AO1 rewards accurate recall of facts, definitions and equations. AO2 rewards application of that knowledge to familiar and unfamiliar contexts, including calculations and structured explanations. AO3 rewards analysis and evaluation, including interpreting data, judging experimental design and reaching supported conclusions. A very common pattern is a candidate who can state a definition perfectly but cannot use it to explain a trend, or who can carry out a calculation but cannot comment on whether the result is reasonable. When you revise, plan deliberately for all three objectives rather than treating AO1 as the whole job.
| Objective | Typical demand |
|---|---|---|
| AO1 | State, define, recall equations and colours |
| AO2 | Calculate, apply, explain in context |
| AO3 | Analyse data, evaluate methods, justify |
4. Command Words and Question Decoding |
One of the most consistent messages in any AQA chemistry examiner report is that candidates answer a question they were not asked. A candidate reads "explain" and writes a description; reads "suggest" and tries to recall something from a textbook; reads "calculate" and writes only an answer with no working. Command words are the instructions, and they determine how marks are awarded. In the strongest scripts, the command word is underlined, the number of marks is noted, and the answer is structured to match - one mark per distinct chemical point, in the order the question was asked. A useful habit in the exam is to spend ten seconds rewriting the command word and mark tariff in the margin before writing anything at all.
| Command word | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| State / Give | A short factual answer, no reasoning |
| Describe | Say what happens or what is seen |
| Explain | Give a reason linked to theory |
| Suggest | Apply ideas to an unfamiliar context |
| Deduce / Calculate | Show working; units and precision matter |
5. Mathematical Skills, Units and Significant Figures |
A substantial proportion of the marks in A-level Chemistry - at least one fifth - is credited to mathematical skills, and the report confirms that these marks are routinely dropped for reasons that have nothing to do with chemistry. The recurring errors are predictable: values rounded too early in a multi-step calculation; answers given without units or with the wrong unit; powers of ten lost when converting cm³ to dm³; significant figures that do not match the data given in the question; and graphs read carelessly when a tangent or a gradient is required. Examiners also noted that many candidates could do the arithmetic but could not comment on the meaning of the number they had produced, which is exactly the AO3 skill that carries the final mark.
- Convert before calculating: 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³, 1 mol dm⁻³ = 1 mol/L.
1 dm³ = 1000 cm³,1 mol dm⁻³ = 1 mol/L。 - Keep full precision on the calculator and round only at the end.
- Match the significant figures of the data in the question (usually 2 or 3).
- Always finish with a unit, and check it cancels correctly.
n = m ÷ M c = n ÷ V pV = nRT
percentage error = (uncertainty ÷ measured value) × 100%
6. Definitions, Terminology and Precise Language |
The report is blunt about definitions: inexact wording loses marks even when the candidate clearly understands the idea. A definition in chemistry is a legal document, not a paraphrase. "Energy change when one mole of substance is burned" is not the standard enthalpy of combustion until it includes complete combustion in oxygen, under standard conditions, with all reactants and products in their standard states. Similar precision is required for first ionisation energy (one mole of gaseous atoms, each losing one electron to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions), electronegativity, dynamic equilibrium and rate of reaction. The practical fix is to write each definition on a card, word-perfect, and test yourself by writing it from memory rather than by recognition alone.
Na(g) → Na⁺(g) + e⁻ ΔH = first ionisation energy
- Standard conditions: 100 kPa and a stated temperature, usually 298 K.
- Per mole matters: quantitative definitions almost always include "per mole".
- State symbols matter: (g), (l), (s), (aq) must be correct in equations.
7. Organic Chemistry: Mechanisms and Curly Arrows |
Organic mechanisms remain one of the most reliable sources of avoidable lost marks. The report highlights familiar faults: arrows that start from an atom rather than from a lone pair or a bond; arrows that point at a molecule rather than at a specific atom; missing charges on intermediates; and mechanisms drawn for the wrong type of reaction. A curly arrow is a statement about electron movement, so it must begin exactly where the electrons are and end exactly where they go. For electrophilic addition, candidates must show the dipole or the polarising effect, then the carbocation intermediate, then the attack of the nucleophile. For nucleophilic substitution, the direction of the arrow from the nucleophile to the carbon, and the loss of the leaving group, must both be shown.
- Start arrows from a lone pair or the middle of a bond, never from a bare atom.
- Show every charge, including the positive charge on the intermediate.
- Match the mechanism to the reagent and conditions given in the question.
- Practise drawing the same mechanism three times from memory, not just reading it.
8. Organic Synthesis Routes and Multi-Step Reasoning |
Multi-step synthesis questions are designed to test whether candidates can plan, not just recall. The report shows that weaker answers name a reagent but omit the essential condition, or produce a product that cannot be formed from the starting material in one step. Stronger answers work backwards from the target molecule, identify the functional group change needed at each
