📚 AS Biology 4.3 Classification and Evolution | AS 生物 4.3 分类与进化
Classification and evolution are central to understanding biodiversity. This article explains how organisms are named, grouped and related, and how natural selection drives change over time.
You will learn the rules of binomial nomenclature, the taxonomic hierarchy, the biological species concept, the evidence for evolution, natural selection, speciation and artificial selection. These ideas are examined together because classification is not just a filing system: it should reflect evolutionary ancestry.
1. Why Classification Matters |
Classification arranges the estimated 8.7 million eukaryotic species into a manageable, international system. Without it, biologists could not communicate reliably about organisms.
Grouping by shared features allows scientists to identify unknown specimens, infer characteristics and plan conservation work.
Classifying organisms also helps us understand evolutionary relationships. Species placed in the same group are thought to share a more recent common ancestor than species in different groups.
- Identification: using keys and shared features to name an unknown organism. /
- Communication: one universal name avoids confusion between languages. /
- Prediction: related organisms may share similar biochemistry or habitat needs. /
- Conservation: groups at risk can be monitored and protected together. /
2. Binomial Nomenclature | 双名法
Binomial nomenclature assigns every species a two-part Latin name. The first part is the genus and begins with a capital letter; the second part is the species and begins with a lower-case letter.
In print, the whole name is italicised, for example Homo sapiens for humans and Escherichia coli for a common gut bacterium.
This convention is universal, avoiding confusion caused by local common names. When handwritten, the name is underlined instead of italicised, and the genus is still capitalised.
After the first full mention, the genus can be abbreviated, so Escherichia coli becomes E. coli. The species name is never used alone without the genus, because "coli" by itself does not identify a species.
3. Taxonomic Hierarchy |
The taxonomic hierarchy is a series of increasingly specific groups. The eight main ranks used today are domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species.
As you move down the hierarchy, the number of organisms in each group decreases, while the number of shared features increases. Members of the same genus are more closely related than members of the same family.
A useful memory phrase is: Dear King Philip Came Over For Good Soup. This gives Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
Dear King Philip Came Over For Good Soup。它对应 Domain、Kingdom、Phylum、Class、Order、Family、Genus、Species。
4. The Species Concept |
A species is often defined as a group of organisms with similar morphology and physiology that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring. Members of the same species share a gene pool and are reproductively isolated from other species.
Reproductive isolation can be behavioural, temporal, mechanical or gametic. For example, two bird species may sing different mating songs, or two plants may release pollen at different times.
The biological species concept has limits. It does not apply easily to asexual organisms, fossils or hybrids. Some distinct species can interbreed in captivity or in narrow hybrid zones, such as lions and tigers producing ligers.
In exams, always mention fertile offspring rather than just offspring. A mule is the sterile offspring of a horse and a donkey, so the horse and donkey remain separate species.
5. Classification Reflects Evolutionary Relationships |
Modern classification aims to be phylogenetic. A phylogenetic group, or clade, contains an ancestor and all of its descendants. This is called a monophyletic group.
If a group contains an ancestor but excludes some descendants, it is paraphyletic. If it contains organisms from different ancestors that evolved similar features separately, it is polyphyletic.
Homologous structures provide evidence for common ancestry. The pentadactyl limb of humans, bats, whales and horses has the same basic bone pattern, even though it performs different functions.
Analogous structures, such as the wings of insects and birds, evolved independently. They show convergent evolution and do not indicate close relatedness.
6. Evidence for Evolution |
The fossil record shows that organisms have changed over time. Fossils can be dated by radioactive isotopes, and their position in rock strata indicates relative age. Transitional fossils, such as Archaeopteryx, show features of two groups.
Comparative anatomy provides evidence from homologous structures, vestigial organs and embryonic development. For example, vertebrate embryos share gill pouches and a tail at early stages.
Molecular evidence compares DNA base sequences, amino acid sequences and cytochrome c. The more closely related two species are, the more similar their sequences and the fewer the differences.
Biogeography is also important. Islands often contain endemic species related to nearby mainland species, which supports the idea of dispersal followed by divergent evolution.
7. Natural Selection |
Natural selection was proposed by Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. It requires variation, inheritance and differential survival and reproduction. Individuals with advantageous alleles are more likely to survive and pass those alleles to offspring.
Over many generations, the frequency of advantageous alleles increases in the gene pool. This is evolution: a change in allele frequencies in a population over time.
Natural selection is not goal-directed. It does not create perfect organisms, and it acts on existing variation. If the environment changes, previously favourable alleles may become disadvantageous.
eproduction. An organism that lives a long time but produces no offspring has low fitness.
Fitness = relative survival × reproduction
8. Variation, Adaptation and Allele Frequency |
Variation arises from mutation, meiosis and random fertilisation. Mutation is the original source of new alleles, while crossing over and independent assortment reshuffle existing alleles.
An adaptation is a feature that increases an organism's chance of survival and reproduction in its environment. Adaptations can be behavioural, physiological or anatomical.
Examples include the thick fur of Arctic mammals, the waxy cuticle of desert plants, and the long, thin beaks of nectar-feeding birds.
Directional selection shifts the mean phenotype in one direction. Stabilising selection favours the average phenotype, and disruptive selection favours both extremes.
Use the term allele frequency rather than gene frequency. A gene may have many alleles, and population genetics tracks how those allele frequencies change.
9. Speciation and Isolation |
Speciation is the formation of new species from existing species. It usually requires isolation, genetic variation, natural selection and reproductive isolation.
Allopatric speciation occurs when a physical barrier, such as a river, mountain range or sea, separates populations. The two populations experience different selection pressures and accumulate different mutations.
Over time, the populations may become so different that they can no longer interbreed. At this point, they are separate species.
Sympatric speciation occurs without a physical barrier, often through polyploidy in plants or through behavioural isolation in animals. Polyploid plants can produce fertile offspring with each other but not with the original diploid species.
Exam questions may ask you to sequence the steps. A common order is: isolation, mutation, different selection pressures, differential survival, reproductive isolation, new species.
10. Artificial Selection and Selective Breeding |
Artificial selection is selection by humans for desired traits. It has produced crop plants and domesticated animals that differ greatly from their wild ancestors.
Farmers choose individuals with high yield, disease resistance, drought tolerance or improved flavour. These individuals are bred, so the desired alleles become more common in the population.
Brassica oleracea is a classic example. Selective breeding has produced cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts from the same wild species.
Artificial selection can reduce genetic diversity and make populations vulnerable to disease. It may also cause unintended health problems in pedigree dogs.
Compare it with natural selection: both require variation and inheritance, but artificial selection is driven by human choice rather than environmental survival.
11. Domains, Kingdoms and Modern Phylogenetics |
The three-domain system divides life into Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya. It is based mainly on ribosomal RNA sequences and differences in cell membrane lipids and cell wall chemistry.
Archaea were once grouped with bacteria, but they have different membrane lipids and RNA polymerase. Many archaea live in extreme environments, though others live in soil and oceans.
The five-kingdom system includes Prokaryotae, Protoctista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia. It is still useful for introductory study, but phylogenetic classification now prefers monophyletic groups based on molecular data.
Molecular clocks use the rate of mutation in DNA or proteins to estimate when lineages diverged. DNA-DNA hybridisation and gene sequencing can quantify genetic similarity.
Classification is therefore a hypothesis. As new molecular evidence appears, groups may be reclassified. This is a strength of science, not a weakness.
12. Exam Technique and Common Mistakes |
When answering classification questions, always give the full binomial name and use the correct format. Do not write homo sapiens or Homo Sapiens.
For natural selection questions, use causal connectives: because, therefore, so. A strong answer explains variation, selection pressure, differential survival and reproduction, inheritance, and changed allele frequency.
Do not say an organism "adapts" during its lifetime in a Lamarckian sense. Individuals do not evolve; populations evolve. Mutations occur randomly and are not caused by need.
Learn examples accurately: Homo sapiens, Escherichia coli, Archaeopteryx, Brassica oleracea and the pentadactyl limb. Named examples earn marks in longer answers.
Finally, distinguish homologous from analogous structures, and monophyletic from paraphyletic groups. These distinctions are common in multiple-choice and extended-response questions.
