📚 IB OPH WB3 Letter Cards: Meaning, Rules, and Language | IB哲学 WB3 字母卡片:意义、规则与语言
In IB Philosophy, the image of letter cards is more than a classroom aid. It opens a window into central questions about meaning, understanding, and rule-following. When a learner arranges letter cards into a word, we often assume they know what the word means. But what exactly is this "knowing"? Is meaning a private mental state, a public use, or a set of rules? This article explores the letter-card example through the lens of key thinkers, especially Ludwig Wittgenstein, and shows how it connects to the IB Philosophy core theme of being human and the optional theme of language.
1. The Philosophical Puzzle of Letter Cards | 字母卡片的哲学困惑
Imagine a child given twenty-six letter cards. She is asked to spell 'dog'. She places D, O, G in the correct order. Has she shown that she understands the word 'dog'? The answer is not obvious. She might have memorised the letter sequence without connecting it to the animal. Or she might have connected it to the animal but be unable to use the word in a new sentence. The letter-card example therefore separates two things we usually run together: the physical arrangement of symbols and the mental act of meaning something by them.
假设一个孩子拿到二十六张字母卡片,被要求拼写"dog"。她按正确顺序摆出 D、O、G。她是否表明自己理解"dog"这个词?答案并不明显。她可能只是记住了字母顺序,却没有把它与动物联系起来;也可能联系起来了,却无法在新句子中使用这个词。因此,字母卡片案例把我们通常混在一起的两件事分开了:符号的物理排列,以及用这些符号意指某事的心理行为。
Three rival answers to the puzzle are available, and each one generates a different philosophy of language. It is worth writing them out before evaluating them.
对上述困惑有三种相互竞争的答案,每一种都通向不同的语言哲学。在评价之前,值得先把它们写清楚。
- Inner-state answer: understanding is a private mental event that accompanies the correct arrangement. | 内在状态答案:理解是与正确排列相伴随的私人心理事件。
- Public-use answer: understanding is the ability to use the word correctly across many contexts. | 公共用法答案:理解是在多种情境中正确使用该词的能力。
- Rule answer: understanding is grasping a rule that determines which arrangements are correct. | 规则答案:理解是把握一条决定哪些排列为正确的规则。
2. Language, Signs, and Symbols | 语言、符号与记号
Philosophers often distinguish between a sign and a symbol. A sign is a physical mark or sound; a symbol is a sign that carries meaning within a system of use. A letter card with 'A' is a sign. It becomes a symbol only when it plays a role in spelling, reading, or speaking. The table below summarises the distinction and adds two related terms that appear repeatedly in exam answers.
哲学家常区分"记号"与"符号"。记号是物理的痕迹或声音;符号是在某个使用系统中承载意义的记号。印着"A"的字母卡片是记号。只有当它在拼写、阅读或说话中发挥作用时,它才成为符号。下表总结了这一区分,并补充了两个在考试答案中反复出现的相关术语。
| Term | Definition | Letter-card example |
|---|---|---|
| Sign | A physical mark or sound considered in itself | The shape 'A' printed on a cardboard card |
| Symbol | A sign that carries meaning within a system of use | The card used to spell 'cat' in a word game |
| Rule | A normative standard determining correct and incorrect moves | D before O before G, not G before O |
| Use | The role a symbol plays in a practice or language game | Naming the animal, calling the dog, writing a story |
The crucial point is that meaning is not printed on the cardboard. Nothing in the ink or the shape tells you what 'D' means. Meaning arrives when symbols are embedded in a practice governed by rules.
关键点在于:意义并非印在纸板上。墨水或形状本身不会告诉你"D"意味着什么。只有当符号被嵌入由规则支配的实践之中,意义才出现。
3. Meaning as Use: Wittgenstein's Later Philosophy | 意义即用法:维特根斯坦后期哲学
Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) argued in the Philosophical Investigations that the meaning of a word is not an object, image, or feeling attached to it, but its role in the language. In section 43 he writes that "the meaning of a word is its use in the language". Ask not what picture stands behind the word, he suggests, but what job the word does. Words are like tools in a toolbox: a hammer, a saw, and a glue pot look quite different, and we understand them by what they are for.
路德维希·维特根斯坦(1889-1951)在《哲学研究》中指出,一个词的意义不是附着于它的对象、图像或感觉,而是它在语言中的角色。他在第43节写道:"一个词的意义就是它在语言中的用法。"他建议:不要问词背后有什么图像,而要问词在做什么工作。词就像工具箱里的工具:锤子、锯子和胶罐看起来很不相同,我们是通过它们的用途来理解它们的。
Apply this to the letter cards. The child who spells 'dog' is not displaying a hidden picture in her head; she is making a move in a game that includes animals, pet names, stories, and corrections from teachers. The meaning of her arrangement is its place in that practice.
把这应用于字母卡片。拼出"dog"的孩子并不是在展示脑海中的隐藏图像;她是在一个包含动物、宠物名字、故事和教师纠正的游戏中走了一步棋。她那组字母排列的意义,就在于它在这一实践中的位置。
Meaning = Use in a shared language game
This slogan is powerful, but it also raises an immediate objection: could a word have a use that only one person follows? That question leads to the private language argument.
这一口号很有力,但也立即引来反驳:一个词能否只有一个人遵守其用法?这一问题引向私人语言论证。
4. Ostensive Definition and the Private Language Argument | 实指定义与私人语言论证
Wittgenstein begins the Investigations with a quotation from Augustine, who describes learning language as a matter of adults pointing at objects and children attaching sounds to them. Ostensive definition - defining a word by pointing - looks like the foundation of meaning. But pointing only works if the learner already has a background of training: she must already know what kind of thing is being pointed at, and that the point is a definition rather than a warning or an invitation.
维特根斯坦在《哲学研究》开篇引用奥古斯丁:奥古斯丁把学语言描述为大人指着物体、孩子把声音附加上去。实指定义——通过指认来定义词语——看似是意义的基础。但指认只有在她已经具备训练背景时才起作用:她必须已经知道被指的是哪一类东西,而且必须知道这次指认是定义,而不是警告或邀请。
The famous beetle-in-a-box passage (section 293) sharpens the point. Suppose each person has a box containing something called a 'beetle', and nobody can look into anyone else's box. If the word 'beetle' still functions in public talk, then whatever is in the box drops out of consideration entirely. The same applies to a private sensation vocabulary such as 'S': if only the speaker can identify it, there is no difference between using the word correctly and merely seeming to.
著名的"盒中甲虫"段落(第293节)把这一点讲得更尖锐。假设每人有一个盒子,里面装着叫"甲虫"的东西,谁也不能看别人的盒子。如果"甲虫"一词仍在公共交谈中起作用,那么盒子里装什么就完全无关紧要了。同样的道理适用于"感觉 S"这类私人词汇:如果只有说话者本人能辨识它,那么"正确使用该词"与"似乎正确使用"之间就没有区别。
No private rule-following → no private meaning
The conclusion is not that sensations are unreal, but that the language in which we describe them is essentially public, tied to natural expressions of pain, joy, and recognition.
结论不是说感觉不真实,而是说我们用来描述感觉的语言本质上是公共的,与疼痛、喜悦、认出的自然表达绑在一起。
5. Rule-Following and the Paradox of Interpretation | 遵守规则与解释的悖论
The letter-card case becomes sharper when the rule is extended beyond the visible examples. In the well-known '+2' exercise (section 185), a pupil learns to write the series 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and is then asked to continue beyond 1000. He writes 1000, 1004, 1008, 1012 - applying the rule "add 2 up to 1000, then add 4". Every answer he gives is compatible with the examples he was shown. So how do we know which rule he was following?
当规则延伸到可见例子之外时,字母卡片案例会变得更尖锐。在著名的"+2"练习(第185节)中,一个学生学会写数列 0, 2, 4, 6, 8,然后被要求继续到1000之后。他写出 1000, 1004, 1008, 1012——即使用规则"到1000之前加2,之后加4"。他给出的每一个答案都与他看到的例子相容。那么我们凭什么说他遵循的是哪一条规则?
Wittgenstein states the paradox at section 201: no course of action could be determined by a rule, because every course of action can be made out to accord with the rule. His reply, in the following sections, is that there is a way of grasping a rule which is not an interpretation. If every application required a further interpretation, we would face an infinite regress: interpretation (1) would need interpretation (2), and so on. What ends the regress is training, custom, and agreement in practice.
维特根斯坦在第201节提出这一悖论:没有任何行动过程能由规则决定,因为每一个行动过程都可以被解释为符合该规则。他在随后几节给出的回应是:存在一种把握规则的方式,它不是解释。如果每一次应用都需要进一步的解释,我们就会陷入无穷后退:解释(1)需要解释(2),如此类推。终止这一后退的,是训练、习俗与实践中的一致。
- Interpretation changes the formulation of the rule each time. | 解释:每一次都改变规则的表述。
- Practice is the regular, taught way of going on that learners are brought into. | 实践:学习者被带入的那种有规律的、被教会的"继续下去"的方式。
- Disposition is the reliable tendency to respond in the same way again. | 倾向:以同样方式再次反应的可靠趋势。
6. Family Resemblance and Open-Textured Concepts | 家族相似与开放纹理概念
If meaning is use, then not every word needs a definition with necessary and sufficient conditions. Consider the word 'game'. Board games, card games, Olympic games, language games: what do they share? Not one common feature, but a network of overlapping similarities - "a complicated network of similarities overlapping and criss-crossing". Wittgenstein compares this to the resemblances among members of a family.
如果意义即用法,那么并非每个词都需要具备充分必要条件的定义。试想"游戏"一词。棋类游戏、纸牌游戏、奥运会、语言游戏:它们共享什么?不是某一个共同特征,而是一张重叠交叉的相似性之网——"一张错综复杂的、重叠交叉的相似性网络"。维特根斯坦把它比作一个家族成员之间的相似。
Friedrich Waismann later described this as the "open texture" of empirical concepts: we cannot specify in advance every situation in which a term would correctly apply. This matters for letter cards, because we can always imagine a new arrangement, a new game, or a new convention that shifts how the cards are used. Concepts are open, and so is the practice that sustains them.
弗里德里希·魏斯曼后来把这一点描述为经验概念的"开放纹理":我们无法事先规定一个术语在其中可被正确使用的所有情境。这对字母卡片很重要,因为我们总能想象新的排列、新的游戏或新的约定,从而改变卡片的用法。概念是开放的,维系概念的实践也是开放的。
7. Forms of Life and the Social Basis of Meaning | 生活形式与意义的社会基础
Wittgenstein's most quoted line about agreement is at section 241: what human beings say is true and false, and they agree in the language they use; this is agreement not in opinions but in form of life. Meaning therefore rests on something shared that is not itself a theory: a way of acting, reacting, and living together. Section 217 pushes further: when we have exhausted justifications, we reach "this is simply what I do".
维特根斯坦关于"一致"最常被引用的话在第241节:人类所说的有真有假,而他们在所使用的语言上是一致的;这不是意见上的一致,而是生活形式上的一致。因此,意义依赖于某种共享之物,而它本身不是一套理论:一种共同行动、反应和生活的方式。第217节更进一步:当我们穷尽了辩护,我们遇到的是"我就这样做"。
The classroom is a small illustration. Letter cards only mean something because a community already treats certain shapes as letters, certain orders as words, and certain teachers as authorities on correctness. Remove the community and the cards become coloured cardboard. This is why the letter-card case sits so naturally in the core theme of being human: it shows that our mindedness is embedded in shared, taught, normative practice.
课堂就是一个小例子。字母卡片之所以有意义,是因为一个共同体已经把某些形状当作字母,把某些顺序当作单词,把某些教师当作正确性的权威。抽掉共同体,卡片就只是彩色纸板。这正是字母卡片案例如此自然地落在核心主题"人之为人"中的原因:它表明我们的心智性是嵌在共享的、被教授的、规范性的实践之中的。
8. Intentionality: What Is Going On in the Learner's Mind? | 意向性:学习者心里发生了什么
Intentionality is the property of mental states being about something. Believing, hoping, and meaning are directed at objects: you believe that it will rain, you mean the animal by 'dog'. Franz Brentano treated intentionality as the mark of the mental, and the letter-card puzzle is a test case. When the child arranges D-O-G, is her mental state directed at the animal, at the letters, or at the pleasure of finishing the task?
意向性是心理状态"指向某物"的特性。相信、希望、意指都指向对象:你相信天会下雨,你用"dog"意指那只动物。弗朗茨·布伦塔诺把意向性视为心理的标志,而字母卡片之谜正是一个测试案例。当孩子排出 D-O-G 时,她的心理状态是指向动物、指向字母,还是指向完成任务的愉快?
Two contrasting replies are worth memorising. John Searle's Chinese Room argument claims that symbol manipulation according to rules is not sufficient for understanding, because a person in a room following a rulebook could produce correct Chinese answers without understanding Chinese. Paul Grice distinguishes speaker meaning (what I intend to convey) from sentence meaning (what the words conventionally mean). The letter-card child may have speaker meaning without sentence meaning, or vice versa - and that gap is exactly what the puzzle exposes.
有两种对照性的回答值得记牢。约翰·塞尔的"中文房间"论证主张,按规则操作符号并不足以产生理解,因为房间里的人只要照规则手册做,就能给出正确的中文答案却并不懂中文。保罗·格莱斯区分"说话者意义"(我想传达的)与"语句意义"(词句约定地意味的)。拼卡片的孩子可能有说话者意义而没有语句意义,或者相反——这一落差正是该困惑所揭示的东西。
9. Behaviourism, Dispositions, and Other Minds | 行为主义、倾向与"他心"问题
A common misreading treats Wittgenstein as a behaviourist who denies inner life. He does not deny it; he denies that inner processes can stand alone as the basis of meaning. Section 580 states that an "inner process" stands in need of outward criteria. The criterion for understanding is not a private glow but the publicly checkable capacity to go on correctly, to correct oneself, and to respond to correction.
一种常见的误读是把维特根斯坦当作否认内在生活的行为主义者。他并不否认内在生活;他否认的是内在过程可以独自充当意义的基础。第580节指出,"内部过程"需要外部的判准。理解的判准不是私人的灵光,而是可公开检验的能力:能正确地继续、能自我纠正、能对纠正作出回应。
Gilbert Ryle's distinction between knowing-how and knowing-that is useful here. Spelling 'dog' is knowing-how; stating that 'dog' has three letters is knowing-that. Ryle argues that knowing-how is not a hidden inner act but a disposition, exercised in performance. This also answers the problem of other minds in a practical way: we do not infer your understanding from an inner theatre, we see it in what you do.
吉尔伯特·赖尔关于"知道如何"与"知道那个"的区分在这里很有用。拼出"dog"是知道如何;说出"dog"有三个字母是知道那个。赖尔认为,知道如何不是隐藏的内在行为,而是一种倾向,在表现中施展出来。这也以实践的方式回答了他心问题:我们不是从你的内部剧场推断你的理解,我们是在你的所作所为中看见它。
10. The Letter-Card Example in the IB Course | 字母卡片案例在IB课程中的运用
In the IB Philosophy course the letter-card exercise functions as a thought experiment that links the core theme of being human with the study of language and meaning. It can be used in several distinct ways in an essay, and examiners reward candidates who deploy a stimulus rather than merely describe it.
在IB哲学课程中,字母卡片练习充当一个思想实验,把核心主题"人之为人"与语言和意义的研究联系起来。它在论文中可以有几种不同的用法,而考官会奖励那些真正"使用"一个素材、而非仅仅描述它的考生。
- As an intuition pump: it makes the inner-state picture of meaning vivid and then challenges it. | 作为直觉泵:它让"内在状态"的意义图景显得生动,随后对它提出挑战。
- As a rule-following case: extend the spelling task past the practised examples to expose the '+2' problem. | 作为遵守规则案例:把拼写任务延伸到练过的例子之外,以暴露"+2"问题。
- As a social-practice case: show that the child is being initiated into a shared institution. | 作为社会实践案例:表明孩子正被引入一个共享的制度。
- As a comparison case: contrast Wittgenstein with Locke's ideas, Grice's intentions, or Searle's Chinese Room. | 作为比较案例:把维特根斯坦与洛克式的观念、格莱斯的意向或塞尔的中文房间作对照。
A strong essay will do at least two of these things and will make the transition explicit: "This is not merely a classroom game; it reveals that understanding cannot be located in a private episode."
一篇优秀的论文至少会做到其中两点,并明确点出过渡:"这不仅仅是一个课堂游戏;它揭示出理解不可能被定位在一个私人事件之中。"
