📚 Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |
In IB Chemistry, the story of matter begins with the atom. Understanding atomic structure, electron arrangement and the periodic table is essential for explaining bonding, reactivity and the properties of elements. This article draws together the core ideas found in the IB syllabus and supports the approach used in Activate Chemistry, building from simple particle ideas to the more demanding concepts of periodicity and ionisation energy.
1. The Nuclear Atom |
All matter is made of atoms. An atom has a central nucleus containing positively charged protons and neutral neutrons. The electrons are negatively charged and move around the nucleus in regions of space called shells or energy levels.
The nucleus is extremely small compared with the total size of the atom, but it contains almost all of the mass. The relative masses are approximately 1 for a proton, 1 for a neutron, and 1/1840 for an electron.
The atomic number Z is the number of protons in the nucleus and defines the element. The mass number A is the total number of protons and neutrons. An atom is therefore electrically neutral when the number of protons equals the number of electrons.
2. Isotopes and Relative Atomic Mass |
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. For example, carbon-12 has 6 protons and 6 neutrons, while carbon-14 has 6 protons and 8 neutrons.
Isotopes have the same chemical properties because they have the same number of outer-shell electrons. However, their physical properties such as mass and density can differ slightly.
The relative atomic mass Aᵣ is the weighted average mass of an element's isotopes relative to 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom. It is calculated using the formula:
Aᵣ = Σ(fᵢ × mᵢ)
where fᵢ is the fractional abundance of each isotope and mᵢ is its relative isotopic mass. Worked examples often require students to calculate Aᵣ from percentage abundances.
| Isotope | Protons | Neutrons | Relative isotopic mass |
|---|---|---|---|
| ¹²₆C | 6 | 6 | 12 |
| ¹⁴₆C | 6 | 8 | 14 |
| ³⁵₁₇Cl | 17 | 18 | 35 |
3. Electron Arrangement |
Electrons are arranged in shells around the nucleus. The first shell can hold up to 2 electrons, the second shell up to 8, and the third shell up to 18 in principle, but the IB course usually uses the simpler 2,8,8 pattern for the first 20 elements.
electronic configuration 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s¹, while chlorine (Z = 17) is 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁵.
The electrons in the outermost shell are called valence electrons. These electrons determine how an element reacts and which group it belongs to in the periodic table.
4. The Periodic Table Structure |
The periodic table arranges elements in order of increasing atomic number. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties because they have the same number of outer-shell electrons.
The table is divided into s-block, p-block, d-block and f-block elements. The s-block contains Groups 1 and 2, the p-block contains Groups 13 to 18, and the transition metals occupy the d-block.
| Block | Groups | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| s-block | 1 and 2 | Na, Mg |
| p-block | 13 to 18 | C, N, O, F, Ne |
| d-block | Transition metals | Fe, Cu, Zn |
The position of an element in the periodic table can be predicted from its electron configuration. The period number equals the highest occupied shell, while the group number is linked to the number of outer-shell electrons.
5. Periodic Trends: Atomic Radius |
Atomic radius decreases across a period because the nuclear charge increases while electrons are added to the same outer shell. The increased attraction pulls the outer electrons closer to the nucleus.
Atomic radius increases down a group because extra electron shells are added. The outer electrons are farther from the nucleus and are also shielded by inner electrons.
When answering IB questions, always link the trend to three factors: nuclear charge, electron shielding and distance between the outer electrons and the nucleus.
6. Ionisation Energy | 电离能
First ionisation energy is the energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous ions with a 1+ charge.
X(g) → X⁺(g) + e⁻
Across a period, first ionisation energy generally increases because of the greater nuclear charge and smaller atomic radius. Down a group it decreases because outer electrons are further from the nucleus and more shielded.
Successive ionisation energies provide evidence for electron shells. A large jump occurs when an electron is removed from an inner shell, so the number of electrons removed before the jump corresponds to the number of outer-shell electrons.
