📚 Heat Transfers Circus Mark Scheme |
In a KS3 science classroom, a heat transfers circus lets you move around different experiment stations to observe conduction, convection and radiation. This mark scheme explains exactly what examiners look for when they award marks to your observations, tables, graphs and conclusions.
1. Overview of the Heat Transfers Circus |
A circus is a set of short practical stations. You may spend about 10 minutes at each one. The heat transfers circus usually has at least three stations: conduction, convection and radiation.
For each station you need to identify the variable being changed, the variable being measured and the controls. You also need to record data and then use the pattern to write a conclusion.
2. Station 1: Conduction Through Metal Rods |
In this station, drawing pins are often stuck to a metal rod using small equal blobs of petroleum jelly. The rod is heated at one end, and the pins drop off one by one as heat travels along the rod.
The mark scheme looks for the idea that conduction happens mainly in solids because vibrating particles pass energy to their neighbours without the material moving as a whole.
- Independent variable: distance of the pin from the heat source.
- Dependent variable: time taken for the pin to drop.
- Control variables: length and type of rod, amount of petroleum jelly, shape of pin.
3. Station 2: Convection in a Liquid |
Convection is usually shown by gently heating a beaker of water with a small crystal of potassium permanganate at the bottom. The purple colour rises, spreads across the top, then sinks at the cooler side, forming a circulation loop.
The mark scheme requires you to state that convection occurs in liquids and gases. Particles gain energy, move faster and spread out, making the heated fluid less dense, so it rises. Cooler fluid is denser and sinks.
A common one-mark explanation is: 'Heated water expands, becomes less dense and rises. Cold water moves in to replace it and is then heated.'
4. Station 3: Radiation from Black and Silver Surfaces |
In the radiation station, two metal cans or Leslie cubes are used. One side is matt black and the other is shiny silver. A heater or a lamp shines equally on both surfaces, and temperature sensors record the rise in temperature.
The mark scheme expects you to know that radiation is the transfer of thermal energy by infrared electromagnetic waves. It does not need particles, so it can travel through a vacuum.
- Matt black surfaces are good absorbers and good emitters of infrared radiation.
- Shiny silver surfaces are poor absorbers and poor emitters, but good reflectors.
5. Marking Variables and Fair Testing |
For every station, examiners often award separate marks for writing the independent variable, the dependent variable and at least two control variables. You must use the words 'same' or 'constant' for controls.
Example: 'Use the same metal rod, the same amount of petroleum jelly and the same size pin so the test is fair.' This clearly identifies controls and justifies them.
If you write 'to make it a fair test' without listing controls, you may only get partial credit.
6. Marking Data Collection and Tables |
Marks for tables usually require a ruled table with columns for the independent variable and dependent variable, with clear headings and units. For example: Distance from heat source (cm) and Time to drop (s).
You should record repeated readings where possible, then calculate a mean. Repeat readings improve reliability by reducing the effect of random errors.
In the mark scheme, there may be a mark for using the correct unit. Always write the unit in the header, not next to every value.
7. Marking Graphs and Trends |
When you plot a graph, the mark scheme rewards: labelled axes with units, a sensible linear scale, points plotted accurately, and a line of best fit if appropriate.
For conduction, the graph of distance from hot end against time to drop would usually show a positive correlation: pins farther from the heat source take longer to fall.
You should describe the trend using 'as ... increases, ... increases' rather than just saying 'the line goes up'.
8. Marking Conclusions |
A full-mark conclusion links the data to a scientific explanation. For conduction: 'The pin nearest the flame dropped first because heat energy is conducted along the metal from hot to cold by particle vibrations.'
For convection: 'The purple colour moved in a loop because warm water rose, replaced by cold water sinking, showing a convection current.'
For radiation: 'The black surface heated faster than the shiny one, so matt black is a better absorber of infrared radiation.'
9. Common Misconceptions and Mark Penalties |
One common error is saying 'heat rises'. Heat is energy, not a substance. In convection, it is the hot fluid that rises because it is less dense.
Another misconception is that conduction requires particles to move from the hot end to the cold end. In fact, particles only vibrate and pass energy; they do not travel along the rod.
Writing 'radiation needs air to travel' loses a mark because infrared radiation can travel through a vacuum.
10. Model Answers for Key Questions |
Question: 'Describe how energy is transferred through a metal rod.' Model answer: 'Energy is transferred by conduction. Particles near the heat source vibrate more and bump into neighbouring particles, passing the energy along the rod.'
Question: 'Explain why a shiny silver blanket keeps a runner warm.' Model answer: 'The shiny surface is a poor emitter of infrared radiation, so less heat is lost from the runner's body. It also reflects heat back.'
