📚 KS3 CIE Periodic Table to Colour | KS3 CIE
Learning the periodic table does not have to mean memorising rows of symbols in black and white. One of the most effective KS3 CIE chemistry activities is to colour the periodic table using a clear key, because colour turns abstract element data into visual patterns you can remember. This article shows you how to use colour-coding to master groups, periods, metals and non-metals, and common question types.
1. Why Colour the Periodic Table? |
When you colour the periodic table, you create a visual map of chemical behaviour. Colours help your brain group similar elements together, such as all the gases or all the alkali metals. This is much easier than reading a list of 118 element names.
The CIE KS3 curriculum expects you to describe patterns in the periodic table, not just recall symbols. A coloured table allows you to see those patterns at a glance, which is useful for exams and quick revision.
2. The Grid of Elements: Periods and Groups |
The periodic table is arranged in horizontal rows called periods and vertical columns called groups. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties, while elements in the same period have the same number of electron shells.
Before you colour, label the periods 1 to 7 from top to bottom and groups 1, 2, then 3 to 0 across the right side. In many KS3 tables, the transition metals sit in the middle block and are often coloured separately.
| Term | Meaning |
| Period | A horizontal row in the periodic table |
| Group | A vertical column of elements with similar properties |
3. Colour by State at Room Temperature |
One simple colour key uses the physical state of each element at 25 °C and normal pressure. Most elements are solids, so pick a calm colour such as grey or blue for solids, green for gases, and red for liquids.
At KS3 you only need to know two liquid elements: bromine (Br) and mercury (Hg). The gaseous elements include hydrogen (H₂), nitrogen (N₂), oxygen (O₂), fluorine (F₂), chlorine (Cl₂) and the noble gases in Group 0.
= green. Then your eye can immediately spot which elements are gases and which are solids.
4. Colour by Metal, Non-metal and Metalloid |
One of the most important KS3 ideas is the metal/non-metal divide. Metals are on the left and centre of the table, while non-metals are on the right. A zig-zag line often separates them, with metalloids such as silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge) sitting along the boundary.
reen. If you colour hydrogen carefully, remember it is a non-metal even though it appears on the left side in Group 1.
Metals are usually shiny, conduct electricity and heat, and are malleable. Non-metals are often dull, brittle and poor conductors. The coloured table helps you compare these properties by position.
5. Colour by Chemical Family |
Chemical families are groups with memorable names and reactions. Colour-coding
