📚 Cell Organisation: From Cells to Systems |
All living things share a common feature: they are made of cells. Some organisms, such as bacteria, are unicellular, but most plants and animals are multicellular. In multicellular organisms, cells do not work alone. They are organised into tissues, organs and organ systems, allowing complex functions such as digestion, transport and reproduction to take place efficiently.
1. Levels of Organisation |
Biologists describe the structure of multicellular organisms using a hierarchy of organisation. Starting from the smallest functional unit, the sequence is: cell, tissue, organ, organ system and organism.
Each level builds on the previous one. A tissue is made of similar cells, an organ is made of different tissues, and an organ system is made of several organs working together.
|---|---|---|
| Cell | 细胞 | Basic unit of life | 生命的基本单位 | Muscle cell | 肌肉细胞 |
| Organ | 器官 | Structure made of different tissues | 由不同组织构成的结构 | Stomach | 胃 |
2. Cells as Building Blocks |
The cell is the smallest unit that can carry out all the processes of life, including respiration, growth and response to stimuli. In KS3 science, you need to know that animal cells have a cell membrane, cytoplasm and a nucleus containing genetic material.
Plant cells share these structures but also have a cell wall made of cellulose, a large permanent vacuole and chloroplasts in many cells. These extra structures help plants make food, store water and maintain their shape.
3. Tissues: Groups of Similar Cells |
A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function. The cells in a tissue usually have a similar shape and structure, which suits their shared job.
In animals, examples include muscle tissue, which contracts to produce movement, and nerve tissue, which carries electrical impulses. In plants, epidermal tissue covers surfaces, while vascular tissue transports water and nutrients.
4. Organs: Tissues Working Together |
An organ is a structure made up of two or more different types of tissue that work together to perform a specific function. The stomach, for example, contains muscle tissue to churn food, epithelial tissue to line its surface, and glandular tissue to release digestive juices.
In plants, a leaf is an organ. It contains epidermal tissue, photosynthetic tissue and vascular tissue. Each tissue contributes to the leaf's overall function of making food by photosynthesis.
5. Organ Systems: Organs in Cooperation |
An organ system is a group of organs that work together to perform a major function. The human digestive system includes the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, intestines, liver and pancreas. These organs cooperate to break down food and absorb nutrients.
The circulatory system is another example. The heart pumps blood, while arteries, veins and capillaries carry blood around the body. Organ systems allow tasks to be shared efficiently among specialised structures.
6. The Whole Organism |
The highest level of organisation is the organism itself. All organ systems work together to keep the organism alive and healthy. For example, the respiratory system provides oxygen, the circulatory system transports it, and the muscular system enables movement.
In flowering plants, the root system anchors the plant and absorbs water and minerals, while the shoot system supports leaves and flowers. Together, these systems enable the plant to grow, photosynthesise and reproduce.
7. Plant Cell Organisation |
Plant organisation follows the same hierarchy as animals: cells form tissues, tissues form organs, and organs form systems. Typical plant cells include palisade cells, root hair cells and xylem vessel cells, each adapted to a specific role.
A leaf is an organ composed of several tissues. Upper and lower epidermal tissues protect the leaf, palisade mesophyll performs most photosynthesis, and vascular bundles containing xylem and phloem transport water, mineral ions and sugars.
8. Animal Example: Digestive System |
The digestive system shows how levels of organisation work in a real animal. Smooth muscle cells form muscle tissue in the stomach wall. This tissue, together with epithelial and glandular tissues, makes the stomach an organ.
The stomach then works with the mouth, small intestine, large intestine and other organs to form the digestive system. Each organ carries out a different stage of digestion, from mechanical breakdown to chemical digestion and absorption.
9. Adaptations of Specialised Cells |
Specialised cells have structures that help them perform their functions. A red blood cell is biconcave in shape for a large surface area and contains haemoglobin to carry oxygen. It has no nucleus in humans, which leaves more space for haemoglobin.
A root hair cell has a long, thin extension that increases the surface area for absorbing water and mineral ions from the soil. A nerve cell is very long and conducts electrical impulses over large distances.
10. Observing Organisation with a Microscope |
You can observe cells and tissues using a light microscope. A thin section of an organ, such as a leaf or a piece of muscle, is often stained to make different tissues easier to see.
total magnification = eyepiece magnification × objective lens magnification
fication first, focus carefully, and then increase magnification to view individual cells.
11. Common Misconceptions |
A common mistake is thinking that every cell has a cell wall. In fact, animal cells do not have cell walls; only plant cells, fungi and some bacteria have them.
Another misconception is that every plant cell contains chloroplasts. Root cells, for example, are underground and do not photosynthesise, so they usually have no chloroplasts.
Students sometimes confuse tissues with organs. A tissue is made of similar cells, while an organ contains several different tissues. Knowing the definitions precisely helps avoid losing marks.
12. Exam Tips and Summary |
rgan → organ system → organism. Give a named example at each level to support your answer.
Explain why multicellular organisms need organisation. Large organisms cannot rely on diffusion alone to supply all their cells, so specialised tissues and organs make transport, digestion and gas exchange more efficient.
Remember that plants and animals have different examples of tissues, organs and systems. Practise matching levels of organisation to familiar examples such as leaf, stomach, root system and digestive system.
