📚 KS3 CIE Moments Worksheet Mark Scheme | KS3 CIE
Moments questions appear regularly in KS3 CIE Science assessments, especially in the physics sections on forces and motion. A mark scheme is a useful tool because it shows exactly where marks are awarded for method, substitution, accuracy, and units.
This article breaks down the key ideas behind moments and explains how to answer worksheet questions in the way examiners expect. It also includes worked examples and a mini mark scheme to help you self-assess.
1. What Is a Moment? |
A moment is the turning effect of a force about a pivot. It does not measure how large the force is on its own; it measures how effective that force is at causing rotation.
For example, pushing a door handle far from the hinge creates a larger moment than pushing near the hinge with the same force. That is why door handles are placed far from the hinge.
In KS3 CIE worksheets, you will often be asked to identify the pivot, the force, and the perpendicular distance before calculating a moment.
2. The Moment Equation |
orce is calculated using the equation: moment = force × perpendicular distance from pivot.
M = F × d
Here, M stands for moment, F stands for force, and d stands for the perpendicular distance from the pivot to the line of action of the force.
The distance must be perpendicular, not just any distance along the object. If the force acts at an angle, only the perpendicular component is used.
In KS3, most worksheet questions use forces that are already perpendicular, so d is usually given directly.
3. Units of Moment |
Moment is measured in newton metres. The unit is written as N m, with a space between N and m.
Do not confuse newton metre with joules. Although 1 N m is numerically equal to 1 joule, energy and moment are different quantities.
In a mark scheme, the unit is often worth a separate mark. You must write 'N m' rather than 'N', 'm', 'Nm', or 'n/m'.
For very small moments, you may also see N cm, but in CIE KS3 worksheets the standard unit is N m unless the question says otherwise.
