1. Temperature and Thermal Equilibrium |
Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold an object is, but in thermodynamics it is defined as a property that determines the direction of thermal energy transfer between two objects in contact. Thermal energy flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature until thermal equilibrium is reached, when both regions have the same temperature and there is no net energy transfer.
The Kelvin scale is the absolute temperature scale used in thermal physics. A change of 1 K is exactly the same as a change of 1 °C, but 0 K is absolute zero, the lowest possible temperature, which corresponds to −273.15 °C.
T(K) = θ(°C) + 273.15
2. Heat and Internal Energy |
Internal energy is the sum of the randomly distributed kinetic energy and potential energy of all the particles in a substance. For an ideal gas, internal energy is purely kinetic because there are no intermolecular forces, so potential energy is zero.
Heat is the transfer of internal energy from a hotter body to a cooler body as a result of a temperature difference. It is not the same as internal energy: an object does not contain heat, but it does have internal energy.
3. Specific Heat Capacity | 比热容
Specific heat capacity c is the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of a substance by 1 K without a change of state. The equation is:
Q = mcΔθ
In this equation, Q is the thermal energy supplied in joules, m is the mass in kilograms, c is the specific heat capacity in J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹, and Δθ is the temperature change in kelvin or degrees Celsius. When a substance cools, the same equation gives the energy released as the temperature falls.
|---|---|
| Water |
| Copper |
| Aluminium |
4. Specific Latent Heat |
Specific latent heat L is the energy required to change the state of 1 kg of a substance at constant temperature. The equation is:
Q = mL
Specific latent heat of fusion involves melting or freezing, while specific latent heat of vaporisation involves boiling or condensing. During a change of state, the temperature remains constant even though energy is being supplied. The energy is used to break intermolecular bonds rather than to increase particle kinetic energy.
5. The Mole and Avogadro Constant |
gadro constant Nₐ. This number applies to atoms, molecules, ions or any specified elementary entity.
The molar mass M of a substance is the mass of one mole, measured in kilograms per mole (kg mol⁻¹). For a sample of mass m, the number of moles n is:
n = m ÷ M
6. Ideal Gases and the Gas Laws |
sures, volumes and temperatures. Its particles have negligible volume, move in random motion, collide elastically and exert no intermolecular forces except during collisions.
Boyle' constant temperature, pressure is inversely proportional to volume: pV = constant. Charles' onstant volume, pressure is directly proportional to absolute temperature: p/T = constant.
7. The Ideal Gas Equation |
Combining the three gas laws gives the ideal gas equation:
pV = nRT
Here p is pressure in pascals, V is volume in cubic metres, n is the number of moles, R is the molar gas constant 8.31 J K⁻¹ mol⁻¹, and T is absolute temperature in kelvin.
Often it is useful to write the equation in terms of the number of molecules N = nNₐ:
pV = NkT
Here k is the Boltzmann constant, 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹, and k = R/Nₐ.
8. Kinetic Theory of Gases |
The kinetic theory model explains gas pressure as the force per unit area produced by many molecules colliding with the walls of the container. The pressure depends on the number density of molecules, their mass and their mean square speed.
The key equation derived from kinetic theory is:
pV = ⅓ N m ⟨c²⟩
Here N is the total number of molecules, m is the mass of one molecule, and ⟨c²⟩ is the mean square speed of the molecules.
Combining pV = NkT with pV = ⅓ N m ⟨c²⟩ gives:
½ m ⟨c²⟩ = ³⁄₂ kT
This shows that the average translational kinetic energy of a gas molecule is directly proportional to the absolute temperature.
9. Molecular Kinetic Energy and Temperature |
For an ideal gas, the average kinetic energy of a molecule is given by:
