📚 True Value | 真值
In A-level physics, every measurement is an attempt to discover a quantity's true value. However, the true value is rarely, if ever, known perfectly because all instruments and methods introduce some degree of error. This revision guide explains what true value means, how it relates to accuracy, precision and uncertainty, and why aiming for the true value lies at the heart of experimental physics.
1. Defining True Value |
The true value of a quantity is the value that would be obtained in a perfect measurement, with no errors of any kind. It is the actual, objective value of the physical quantity being measured, independent of the observer or the instrument. In AQA terminology, the true value is the quantity value consistent with the definition of the quantity.
¹⁹ C. This value is accepted because many independent experiments agree within their uncertainties, but no single measurement can claim to reveal it with absolute certainty.
2. Why True Value Is Unknowable |
In practice, the true value cannot be known exactly. Every measuring instrument has finite resolution, every observer has reaction limitations, and every environment introduces small disturbances. Because all measurements contain some error, the true value remains an idealised concept rather than an experimentally attainable number.
This does not mean the true value is useless. It serves as a target: when we improve equipment and technique, we hope our measured values cluster more closely around the true value.
3. Measured Value vs True Value |
A measured value is the result obtained in an actual experiment. It differs from the true value by an amount called the error. The error is defined as the measured value minus the true value.
error = measured value − true value
is measured as 100 Ω ± 2 Ω, we believe the true value likely lies between 98 Ω and 102 Ω.
4. Accuracy and Closeness to True Value |
Accuracy describes how close a measured value is to the true value. A highly accurate measurement has a small error, while an inaccurate measurement is far from the true value. Accuracy is a property of a single measurement or a mean result.
AQA distinguishes accuracy from precision. Accuracy is about closeness to the true value, whereas precision is about the spread of repeated readings, regardless of whether they are near the true value.
A set of readings can be precise but inaccurate if a systematic error shifts every reading away from the true value. For example, a voltmeter with a zero offset may give repeatable readings around 0.5 V when the true voltage is 0 V.
5. Systematic Error and True Value |
A systematic error is a consistent bias affecting all measurements in the same way. It causes the mean of repeated readings to lie away from the true value. Systematic errors include zero errors, calibration errors and assumptions made in a method.
Identifying and correcting systematic errors is essential for improving accuracy. For example, if a metre rule has a worn end, every length measured from that end will be too long by the same amount. Subtracting this zero error moves the measured values closer to the true value.
Systematic errors do not decrease by taking repeat readings. They must be removed by better calibration, different methods or comparison with a standard value.
6. Random Error and True Value |
Random errors cause individual readings to scatter unpredictably around some central value. They arise from fluctuations in reaction time, environmental conditions, electrical noise or judgment between scale divisions.
Random errors can be reduced by taking many repeat readings and calculating a mean. The mean of a large number of readings is expected to lie closer to the true value than any single reading, provided no systematic error is present.
Even with many repeats, the mean is not the true value, but it is the best estimate of the true value from the data. This is why AQA practical work emphasises repeated measurements and mean calculation.
7. Precision Does Not Guarantee Truth |
Precision refers to how closely repeated measurements agree with one another. Precise data have a small spread, but they may still be far from the true value if a systematic error is present.
A common exam trap is to confuse precision with accuracy. A stopwatch may record intervals to 0.01 s, giving very precise readings, but if the experimenter starts it late every time, all readings are systematically too small and thus inaccurate.
The table below summarises the difference. In each case, the true value is the point we would like to hit.
| Term | Meaning | Linked to |
|---|---|---|
| Accuracy | Closeness to the true value | Systematic error |
| Precision | Spread of repeated readings | Random error |
For AQA questions, you should link high accuracy to small systematic error and high precision to small random error.
8. Reducing Error to Approach True Value |
Although the true value cannot be known perfectly, experimental technique can reduce both random and systematic errors so that measurements approach it more closely.
To reduce random errors, scientists take repeat readings, use instruments with higher resolution, and control conditions carefully. To reduce systematic errors, they calibrate instruments against known standards, check zero readings before use, and compare results with accepted values.
In AQA practical assessments, you may be asked to suggest improvements. A good answer identifies the type of error and proposes a specific action that would move the mean result closer to the true value.
9. True Value in AQA Practical Work | AQA
e for the acceleration of free fall g = 9.81 m s⁻² or the specific heat capacity of water.
A reference value is an accepted or standard value used as the best available estimate of the true value. If your measured value agrees with the reference value within experimental uncertainty, your measurement may be considered accurate.
ample, a student measures g as 9.7 ± 0.2 m s⁻². Since 9.81 m s⁻² lies within the range 9.5–9.9 m s⁻², the result is consistent with the reference value, though not identical to it.
10. Representing True Value with Uncertainty |
true value is expected to lie with a certain confidence, often ± the absolute uncertainty.
For a single measurement, the uncertainty may be the instrument resolution. For repeated readings, the uncertainty can be estimated from the range, often using half the range, or from the standard deviation.
2 °C, the true value is expected to lie between 24.3 °C and 24.7 °C. The smaller the uncertainty, the narrower the interval and the more precisely the true value is located.
