📚 Repeatable Measurements in A-Level Physics | A-Level
In AQA A-level Physics, practical skills are assessed through written questions that ask you to evaluate data, procedures and errors. One key term is 'repeatable'. Understanding what makes a set of measurements repeatable, and how repeatability differs from similar words like 'reproducible', is essential for the practical-based questions in Papers 3 and 5, and in the required practical endorsement.
1. What 'Repeatable' Means in AQA Physics | AQA
In AQA physics, a measurement is repeatable if the same experimenter, using the same equipment and the same method, gets the same results when the experiment is repeated over a short time interval. For example, if you measure the time for a pendulum to complete ten swings five times, and the five values are 12.4 s, 12.5 s, 12.4 s, 12.6 s and 12.5 s, the results are repeatable because the spread is small.
Repeatability is about consistency, not necessarily correctness. A result can be repeatable even if it is far from the true value because of a systematic error. For instance, a voltmeter with a zero error may give 0.52 V every time for a true 0.50 V. The readings are repeatable but inaccurate.
2. Repeatable vs Reproducible |
AQA expects you to distinguish 'repeatable' from 'reproducible'. A result is reproducible if a different experimenter, using a different technique or different equipment, obtains the same result. Repeatable refers to the same person and same equipment; reproducible refers to different people and often different apparatus or methods.
| Repeatable | Reproducible |
| Same experimenter, same equipment, short time | Different experimenter, different equipment or method |
| Tests consistency of one person's method | Tests reliability across independent teams |
The table above summarises the key contrast. In an exam answer, always check whether the question describes the same student repeating the experiment or a different student using different apparatus.
3. Random Errors and Repeatability |
Random errors cause readings to scatter unpredictably above and below the true value. They are the main limiting factor for repeatability. Sources include human reaction time when starting and stopping a stopwatch, small fluctuations in room temperature, noise in electrical signals, and parallax when reading a scale. If random errors are large, repeated readings show a wide spread, so the results are not repeatable.
Repeating a measurement and taking the mean reduces the effect of random errors, making the result more reliable. This is why AQA required practicals often ask you to repeat readings and calculate a mean. The mean is the best estimate of the true value when only random errors are present.
4. Resolution, Precision and Repeatability |
Repeatability is closely related to precision. Precision describes how closely repeated measurements agree with each other. A set of results with a small range is precise, and therefore repeatable. Resolution is the smallest change an instrument can detect, such as 0.01 s on a digital stopwatch or 1 mm on a metre ruler. A finer resolution does not automatically make results repeatable, but it can reveal small variations that a coarser instrument would hide.
An instrument with poor resolution may make results appear artificially repeatable because all readings are rounded to the same coarse scale division. For example, a thermometer with 1 °C divisions may give 22 °C, 22 °C, 22 °C, but a 0.1 °C thermometer may show 22.1 °C, 22.3 °C, 22.0 °C. The first set looks repeatable but lacks information.
5. How to Assess Repeatability from Data |
bility. You can also quote the uncertainty as half the range, often written as ±(range/2).
tainty from repeatability is ±0.01 mm, which is small, so the measurements are repeatable.
