📚 Valid Conclusions in AQA A-Level Physics: How to Judge and Write Them | AQA A-Level
In AQA A-level Physics, practical questions often ask whether a conclusion is valid, or ask you to write a conclusion from data. A valid conclusion is more than restating results: it must be supported by evidence, bounded by uncertainties, and linked to the original hypothesis or aim.
1. What "Valid" Means in AQA Practical Work | 在 AQA 实验工作中 "有效" 的含义
In AQA A-level Physics, a conclusion is valid if it follows logically from the collected data, is consistent with the uncertainty in those data, and is not overgeneralised beyond the range tested.
A valid conclusion is therefore not simply "the experiment worked". It must state the relationship found, the evidence for it, and the limitations of that evidence.
Do not confuse a conclusion with an evaluation. The conclusion states the relationship and whether it matches the aim; the evaluation comments on the quality of the method and suggests improvements.
2. Starting from the Aim and Hypothesis |
Most AQA practical questions provide an aim or a hypothesis, such as "the resistance of a wire increases with length". A valid conclusion must directly address that aim and say whether the data support, partially support, or contradict it.
For example, after plotting resistance R against wire length L, a straight line through the origin would support direct proportionality: R ∝ L.
R ∝ L
Be careful not to write "this proves the hypothesis". In experimental physics, we say "the data support the hypothesis within experimental uncertainty".
3. Using Evidence, Not Prediction |
A common AQA mark is lost when candidates write
