📚 Mastering Intervals in AQA A-Level Physics | AQA A-Level
In AQA A-Level Physics, the word 'interval' appears again and again: in practical work, in data analysis, in wave mechanics and in kinematics. It usually means a range or a difference between two values, and it almost always carries a unit such as seconds, metres or volts. Because the word is used in several different ways, many students lose marks not because the physics is hard, but because they misread which kind of interval a question is asking for. This guide separates the three main meanings of 'interval' in the AQA specification, shows you the standard equations and units, and works through the calculation habits that examiners reward.
1. What Does 'Interval' Mean in AQA A-Level Physics? | AQA A-Level
An interval can be read directly from a scale, calculated from two clock readings, or quoted as an uncertainty around a mean value. Whatever the source, the interval always has the same unit as the quantity being measured: an interval of time is measured in seconds, an interval of length in metres, and an interval of potential difference in volts.
In practice, AQA questions use 'interval' , as a reading interval, which is set by the resolution of the instrument you are using. Third, as an uncertainty interval, which is a range within which the true value is expected to lie. Recognising which one a question wants is the single most useful exam skill in this topic.
human reaction time. A reading interval of ±0.5 mm on a metre rule produces a percentage uncertainty when it is compared with the length being measured. In an exam, you are usually asked to move from the raw interval to its uncertainty, so it pays to keep all three ideas in mind at once.
2. Time Intervals and the Equation Δt = t₂ − t₁ | 时间间隔与公式 Δt = t₂ − t₁
The most familiar interval in A-Level Physics is the time interval between two events. If an event starts at time t₁ and finishes at time t₂, the duration is found by simple subtraction, and the result is always positive when t₂ is later than t₁.
Δt = t₂ − t₁
ation: the unit is carried through the whole calculation, and the answer is given to the same number of decimal places as the readings, because both readings were recorded to two decimal places.
Timing intervals measured by hand are limited by reaction time, which is typically 0.2 s to 0.3 s for a human operating a stopwatch. AQA examiners expect you to mention this as a source of uncertainty, and to suggest improvements such as timing over many oscillations and dividing by the number of oscillations, or replacing the stopwatch with light gates and a data logger. Repeating a single slow measurement does not remove reaction-time error, because the error is systematic in direction rather than random.
3. Reading Intervals, Resolution and Instrument Precision |
e the true value could lie anywhere within half of that smallest division on either side of the mark, the reading interval is usually quoted as ±0.5 mm, or ±0.05 cm.
reading interval = ±½ × resolution
fter year. Digital instruments behave slightly differently: their uncertainty is conventionally taken as ±1 in the last displayed digit, and the true value is not assumed to be evenly distributed across the whole display interval.
| Digital voltmeter | 数字电压表 | 0.01 V | ±0.01 V (last digit) |
| Stopwatch | 秒表 | 0.01 s | ±0.2 s to ±0.3 s (reaction time) |
The table makes an important point: an instrument's resolution gives the smallest possible reading interval, but it is not always the dominant uncertainty. A stopwatch displays hundredths of a second, yet the real limitation is the person pressing the button. Always ask which contribution to the interval is largest before quoting a final uncertainty.
4. Measurement Interval and Absolute Uncertainty |
val is ±0.05 cm, so the true value lies between 12.35 cm and 12.45 cm. This range is called the absolute uncertainty interval, and it is quoted in the same units as the measurement itself.
measurement interval: 12.40 cm ± 0.05 cm, i.e. 12.35 cm to 12.45 cm
uld never overstate precision. Writing 12.4000 cm when the interval is ±0.05 cm is a contradiction in terms and is penalised in the practical endorsement and in written papers alike.
When measurements are combined, the way uncertainties add depends on the operation. For addition and subtraction of quantities, the absolute uncertainties add directly. For multiplication and division, it is the percentage uncertainties that add. Getting this rule the right way round decides whether a final quoted interval is sensible or wildly wrong.
5. Percentage Uncertainty and the Width of the Interval |
An absolute uncertainty interval becomes much more informative when it is turned into a percentage. The percentage uncertainty tells you how large the interval is compared with the value you have measured, and it is the currency of AQA practical questions.
% uncertainty = (absolute uncertainty ÷ measured value) × 100%
to millimetres gives 124.0 mm ± 0.5 mm. The percentage uncertainty is (0.5 ÷ 124.0) × 100% ≈ 0.40% e uncertainty is still 0.05 cm, but the percentage uncertainty becomes (0.05 ÷ 2.40) × 100% ≈ 2.1%, more than five times larger.
That comparison carries a practical lesson. If a quantity is small, the interval around it is proportionally large, and the experiment becomes unreliable. This is exactly why AQA mark schemes reward suggestions such as measuring the thickness of many sheets of paper and dividing, or measuring many oscillations of a pendulum and dividing by the count.
form Z = A × B ÷ C, the percentage uncertainties of A, B and C simply add to give the percentage uncertainty in Z. For Z = A + B, the absolute uncertainties add. Always convert back to an absolute interval at the end, so that the final answer can be quoted with the correct unit and a sensible number of significant figures.
对于形如 Z = A × B ÷ C 的量,A、B、C 的百分比不确定度直接相加即为 Z 的百分比不确定度;对于 Z = A + B,则绝对不确定度相加。
6. Uncertainty Intervals from Repeat Readings |
An uncertainty interval is a range within which the true value is expected to lie. When a quantity is measured several times, the spread of the repeat readings gives a direct estimate of that range, without any assumption about the instrument.
uncertainty ≈ (maximum − minimum) ÷ 2
.06 s, so the uncertainty interval is ±0.03 s, and the result is quoted as 2.15 s ± 0.03 s. Because the repeat readings already capture reaction time and other random effects, you do not add the stopwatch reaction time on top.
Two warnings are worth remembering. First, the half-range method is an estimate, not a rigorous statistical quantity, and it will always underestimate the true spread if only two or three readings are taken. Second, an outlying reading caused by a clear mistake should be identified and repeated rather than being left in the data to inflate the range artificially. In AQA practical questions, unexplained anomalies weaken the conclusion even when the arithmetic is correct.
7. Intervals on Graphs: Error Bars and Worst Acceptable Lines |
rizontally at that point. When a point is quoted as 4.8 V ± 0.1 V, the error bar extends from 4.7 V to 4.9 V on the voltage axis.
The line of best fit should pass through as many error bars as possible and leave roughly equal numbers of points above and below it. The steepest and shallowest lines that still pass through all the error bars are the worst acceptable lines, and they define the interval within which the true gradient lies.
gradient interval = (gradient of best line ± half the difference between worst lines)
difference is (5.2 − 4.4) ÷ 2 = 0.4 Ω, so the resistance is quoted as 4.8 Ω ± 0.4 Ω, a percentage uncertainty of (0.4 ÷ 4.8) × 100% ≈ 8.3% the interval is expressed around the best-fit value, not around one of the extreme lines.
8. Intervals in Wave Mechanics: Wavelength, Period and Path Difference |
cessive points in phase, and the frequency f is the number of oscillations per unit time, related by f = 1 ÷ T.
c = f λ f = 1 ÷ T
Interference questions are essentially interval questions. In a stationary wave, the distance between adjacent nodes is λ ÷ 2, and the distance between a node and the next antinode is λ ÷ 4. In a two-source interference pattern, the path difference determines whether a point is a maximum or a minimum: a path difference of nλ gives constructive interference, while a path difference of (n + ½)λ gives destructive interference, where n is an integer.
nks the slit spacing d, the diffraction angle θ and the order n, and the interval between successive orders in the pattern gives a way of measuring λ to high precision. Because the angle interval is measured across a long distance on the screen, the percentage uncertainty in θ is small, which is why gratings outperform a simple two-slit arrangement in the required practical work.
9. Intervals in Kinematics and Motion Graphs |
Kinematics is built on intervals. Average velocity is the displacement interval divided by the time interval, and average acceleration is the velocity interval divided by the time interval over which it occurs.
v̄ = Δs ÷ Δt ā = Δv ÷ Δt
On a velocity-time graph, the gradient between two chosen times gives the acceleration over that interval, and the area under the curve between those same two times gives the displacement covered during the interval. Choosing the interval carefully is part of the physics: acceleration during a collision may last only milliseconds, while acceleration during a rocket launch persists for minutes.
placement s during the time interval t, starting with initial velocity u. Always define the start and end of the interval before substituting values, and check the sign convention: if upward is positive, then a displacement interval that ends below the start point must be quoted as negative.
10. Intervals in Electricity: Potential Difference and Time Constants |
In electricity the word interval has a subtle meaning. The potential difference between two points is the difference in electrical potential between them, that is, an interval measured in volts rather than a single absolute value.
V = W ÷ Q ε = I (R + r)
volt is one joule per coulomb, so the potential difference interval represents the energy transferred per unit charge between the two points. The electromotive force ε of a source is the total energy per unit charge supplied, part of which is lost across the internal resistance r, leaving the terminal potential difference interval across the external circuit.
