📚 Precision in A-Level Physics: Measurements, Uncertainty and Error Analysis |
In AQA A-level Physics, precision is a core practical skill. Every measurement you take carries an uncertainty, and exam questions regularly ask you to distinguish precision from accuracy, combine uncertainties and comment on experimental quality. This revision guide explains the key ideas with AQA-style examples.
1. What is Precision? |
Precision describes how closely repeated measurements agree with one another. If you measure the length of a wire five times and obtain 1.02 m, 1.03 m, 1.02 m, 1.03 m and 1.02 m, your readings are precise because the spread is small.
Precision does not mean the measurement is close to the true value. It only tells you about the consistency or spread of the results. A precise set of readings can still be wrong if every reading is shifted by the same systematic error.
2. Precision vs Accuracy |
Accuracy describes how close a single measurement is to the true or accepted value. Precision describes the spread of repeated results. The classic dartboard picture summarises this: precise but inaccurate darts land tightly grouped away from the bullseye; accurate but imprecise darts are centred on the bullseye but widely scattered.
In an experiment, you can improve precision by using better technique or a higher-resolution instrument, and improve accuracy by removing systematic errors such as zero error or calibration drift.
3. Repeatability and Reproducibility |
Repeatability means that the same observer using the same equipment under the same conditions gets close agreement between repeated measurements. Reproducibility means that different observers, different instruments or different laboratories also obtain close agreement.
AQA practical questions may give you two sets of results from different groups. If both sets have small internal spread but the mean values differ, the results are repeatable but not reproducible, suggesting a systematic difference between the groups.
4. Resolution and Reading Uncertainty |
Resolution is the smallest change in the measured quantity that an instrument can detect. For a metre ruler, the resolution is 1 mm; for a digital voltmeter, it is the value of the last displayed digit.
ually ± the last displayed digit, unless the manufacturer gives a different specification.
Analogue reading uncertainty = ± ½ × smallest scale division
Digital reading uncertainty = ± 1 × last displayed digit
5. Random and Systematic Errors |
Random errors cause readings to scatter unpredictably about the true value. They arise from human judgement, environmental changes or fluctuations in the instrument. Repeating a measurement and calculating the mean reduces the effect of random error.
Systematic errors shift all readings in the same direction. Examples include a micrometer zero error, a digital balance that reads high because it is not tared, or a stopwatch that runs slow. Averaging many readings does not remove a systematic error.
6. Absolute, Fractional and Percentage Uncertainty |
measurement. For example, a length of 12.0 ± 0.5 cm has an absolute uncertainty of 0.5 cm.
Fractional uncertainty is the absolute uncertainty divided by the measured value. Percentage uncertainty is the fractional uncertainty multiplied by 100%. These are useful when comparing the quality of different measurements or when combining uncertainties.
Fractional uncertainty = absolute uncertainty ÷ measured value
Percentage uncertainty = (absolute uncertainty ÷ measured value) × 100%
7. Combining Uncertainties in Calculations |
When two measured values are added or subtracted, the absolute uncertainties add. When values are multiplied or divided, the percentage uncertainties add. When a value is raised to a power, the percentage uncertainty is multiplied by that power.
If Q = a + b or Q = a − b: ΔQ = Δa + Δb
If Q = a × b or Q = a ÷ b: %ΔQ = %Δa + %Δb
If Q = aⁿ: %ΔQ = n × %Δa
These rules are important for AQA practical analysis, for example calculating the uncertainty in density from measurements of mass and volume, or the uncertainty in resistance from V/I.
