📚 Measurement Error and Uncertainty |

In experimental physics, no measurement can ever be perfectly exact. Measurement error describes the unavoidable difference between a recorded value and the true value of the quantity, while uncertainty quantifies the range within which the true value is likely to lie.

AQA A-level Physics examines measurement error through practical work, data analysis and written questions on uncertainty. Mastering this topic is essential for both Paper 3 practical skills and the required practical endorsement.

1. Why Measurement Error Matters |

Every instrument has a finite resolution and every observer has a reaction time, so a measured value is never identical to the accepted true value. The difference between a measurement and the true value is called the measurement error, but since the true value is unknowable, we usually work with an uncertainty range.

Understanding error allows a physicist to judge whether a result is consistent with a theoretical prediction, compare two independent measurements, and design better experiments. Examiners reward answers that use uncertainty to support a conclusion rather than simply stating that 'errors were made'.

A key distinction in AQA Physics is that an error is not the same as a mistake. A mistake, such as misreading a scale or recording the wrong unit, should be corrected; an error is a natural limitation of the measuring process that can be reduced but never eliminated entirely.

2. Accuracy and Precision |

Accuracy describes how close a measured value is to the true or accepted value. A measurement is accurate if systematic errors are small, so the mean of many readings lies near the true value.

Precision describes how closely repeated measurements agree with one another. A set of readings is precise if random errors are small, giving a small spread of values even if the mean is far from the accepted value.

It is possible to have precise but inaccurate data when a systematic error shifts every reading by the same amount. The classic target diagram illustrates this: precise shots are clustered tightly, while accurate shots are centred on the bullseye.

3. Random and Systematic Errors |

Random errors cause readings to fluctuate unpredictably above and below the true value. They arise from factors such as reaction time, background noise, vibration, or small variations in the quantity being measured.

Repeating a measurement and calculating the mean reduces the effect of random errors because positive and negative deviations tend to cancel. Random errors therefore affect precision but can be minimised by taking more readings.

Systematic errors produce a consistent offset in the same direction for every reading. Examples include a zero error on a balance, a wrongly calibrated voltmeter, or measuring a length from the 1 mm mark rather than the zero mark of a ruler.

Repeating measurements cannot reduce a systematic error because the same bias affects every result. Systematic errors affect accuracy and can only be reduced by correcting the instrument or changing the experimental method.

SystematicConsistent offset from true value | 偏离真实值的固定偏移Calibration and method correction | 校准和方法修正

4. Resolution and Instrument Uncertainty |

Resolution is the smallest change in the quantity being measured that gives a detectable change in the instrument reading. A millimetre ruler has a resolution of 1 mm, while a digital voltmeter that displays 0.01 V has a resolution of 0.01 V.

r with 1 mm divisions therefore gives a length uncertainty of ±0.5 mm in a single reading.

.01 A because the true value could be anywhere between 0.335 A and 0.345 A after rounding.

analogue uncertainty = ± ½ × smallest scale division

digital uncertainty = ± smallest displayed digit

5. Absolute, Fractional and Percentage Uncertainty |

urement. If a current is recorded as I = 2.4 A ± 0.1 A, the absolute uncertainty is 0.1 A.

如果电流记录为 I = 2.4 A ± 0.1 A,则绝对不确定度为 0.1 A。

Fractional uncertainty is the absolute uncertainty divided by the measured value. Percentage uncertainty is the fractional uncertainty multiplied by 100%, which makes uncertainties of different quantities easier to compare.

percentage uncertainty = (absolute uncertainty ÷ measured value) × 100%

length measurement of 25.0 cm ± 0.1 cm has a percentage uncertainty of (0.1 ÷ 25.0) × 100% = 0.4%. A length of 5.0 cm ± 0.1 cm has a percentage uncertainty of 2.0%, showing that the same absolute uncertainty matters more for smaller quantities.

6. Combining Uncertainties: Sums and Differences |

When two measured quantities are added or subtracted, their absolute uncertainties are added. This rule applies whether the result is a sum or a difference, so a difference can sometimes carry a large uncertainty even if the final value is small.

if c = a + b or c = a − b, then Δc = Δa + Δb

1.0 cm ± 0.4 cm. The percentage uncertainty in the extension is therefore very large at 40%.

This rule explains why experiments that measure a small difference between two large readings can be unreliable. It is often better to measure the difference directly using a zeroed instrument such as a vernier calliper.

7. Combining Uncertainties: Products, Quotients and Powers |

When measured quantities are multiplied or divided, percentage uncertainties are added. This is because each quantity contributes a relative uncertainty to the final calculated result.

if Z = A × B or Z = A ÷ B, then %Z = %A + %B

For electrical power calculated as P = IV, if the current has a 2% uncertainty and the voltage has a 3% uncertainty, the percentage uncertainty in power is 5% e absolute uncertainty in power can then be found by multiplying the calculated power by 5%.

percentage uncertainty in volume is three times the percentage uncertainty in the radius.

if Z = Aⁿ, then %Z = n × %A

8. Repeats and Reducing Uncertainty |

Random uncertainty can be reduced by taking repeat readings and calculating the mean. With n independent readings, the spread of the data gives a simple estimate of the uncertainty using the half-range method.

uncertainty from repeats = ½ × (maximum value − minimum value)

range of 0.06 s. The half-range is 0.03 s, so the time can be reported as 1.21 s ± 0.03 s.

Taking more readings narrows the standard error of the mean, but the half-range method remains a straightforward AQA-approved approach for estimating uncertainty from repeated measurements. Systematic errors, however, are not reduced by averaging and must be identified separately.

9. Error Bars and Graphical Analysis |

On a graph, each data point can be shown with vertical and horizontal error bars. The length of each error bar represents the absolute uncertainty in that measurement, usually one uncertainty above and one below the plotted point.

A line of best fit should pass through the error bars. If one point lies far outside the general trend and its error bars do not overlap the best-fit line, it may be an anomalous point and should be investigated or excluded from the analysis.

To estimate the uncertainty in a gradient, draw the steepest and shallowest acceptable worst-fit lines that still pass through most error bars. The uncertainty in the gradient is found from half the difference between the maximum and minimum gradients.

Δgradient = ½ × (maximum gradient − minimum gradient)

10. Significant Figures and Reporting |

Uncertainties should usually be quoted to one significant figure, and the measured value must be rounded to the same number of decimal places as the absolute uncertainty. This avoids giving a false impression of precision beyond what the experiment can support.

reading becomes 1.85 V ± 0.04 V. The final result is therefore written as (1.85 ± 0.04) V.

When quoting a percentage uncertainty, one or two significant figures may be given. In AQA A-level Physics, examiners accept one significant figure in the uncertainty, but two significant figures are sometimes used when the first digit is a 1 to avoid excessive rounding.

Final calculated values should never be quoted with more significant figures than the raw data justify. For example, quoting a resistance as 4.56789 Ω from a meter that resolves only 0.01 Ω is physically meaningless and loses marks in practical assessments.
