📚 Energetics | 能量学

Energy changes control whether a reaction releases heat to its surroundings or takes heat in from them. In AQA A-Level Chemistry 1.4 Energetics, you study how to measure, define and calculate enthalpy changes using calorimetry, Hess's law and bond enthalpies.

1. Enthalpy and Enthalpy Change |

ange, written as ΔH = H(products) − H(reactants). The unit of enthalpy change is kJ mol⁻¹.

Enthalpy is a state function: ΔH depends only on the initial and final states of the reaction, not on the route taken. This idea is the foundation of Hess's law later in this topic.

If ΔH is negative, the products have less enthalpy than the reactants and energy is released to the surroundings. If ΔH is positive, the products have more enthalpy than the reactants and energy is absorbed from the surroundings.

2. Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions |

An exothermic reaction transfers energy from the chemical system to the surroundings, so the temperature of the surroundings increases and ΔH is negative. Common examples include combustion, neutralisation and respiration.

An endothermic reaction absorbs energy from the surroundings into the chemical system, so the temperature of the surroundings decreases and ΔH is positive. Typical examples include thermal decomposition and photosynthesis.

It is important to describe the direction of energy transfer clearly. For an exothermic reaction, energy is released to the surroundings; for an endothermic reaction, energy is taken in from the surroundings.

3. Reaction Profile Diagrams |

A reaction profile diagram plots enthalpy on the y-axis against reaction progress on the x-axis. Reactants and products are shown at their relative enthalpy levels, and the activation energy Eₐ is shown as the energy barrier from reactants to the transition state.

For an exothermic reaction, the products line is lower than the reactants line, so the arrow for ΔH points downwards and ΔH is negative. For an endothermic reaction, the products line is higher than the reactants line, so the arrow for ΔH points upwards and ΔH is positive.

The activation energy Eₐ is always positive because bonds must be broken or weakened before new bonds can form. A catalyst lowers Eₐ but does not change the values of H(reactants), H(products) or ΔH.

4. Standard Enthalpy Changes |

Standard enthalpy changes are measured under standard conditions: a pressure of 100 kPa, a temperature of 298 K, and solution concentrations of 1 mol dm⁻³. The standard state of a substance is its most stable physical state under these conditions.

Definitions must state the molar quantity and the standard states of all species. The table below summarises the key standard enthalpy changes used in AQA examinations.

NameSymbolDefinition
Standard enthalpy of reactionΔHᵣ⦵The enthalpy change when a reaction occurs in the molar quantities shown in the equation under standard conditions.
Standard enthalpy of formationΔHf⦵The enthalpy change when one mole of a compound is formed from its elements in their standard states under standard conditions.
Standard enthalpy of combustionΔHc⦵The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is completely burned in oxygen under standard conditions.
Standard enthalpy of neutralisationΔHneut⦵The enthalpy change when one mole of water is formed from an acid and an alkali under standard conditions.

e standard enthalpy of combustion of methane refers to CH₄(g) + 2O₂(g) → CO₂(g) + 2H₂O(l).

5. Calorimetry | 量热法

Calorimetry is an experimental technique used to measure the heat change during a reaction. A simple calorimeter is usually a polystyrene cup or glass beaker containing water or an aqueous solution, with a thermometer to record the temperature change.

. For dilute aqueous solutions, chemists assume c = 4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹ and density = 1 g cm⁻³.

The calorimeter itself also absorbs some heat, and heat can be lost to the air. In simple experiments these effects are ignored, but they are important sources of error.

6. Calculating Enthalpy Change from Experiments |

culate the heat change in joules, then convert to kilojoules. To find the molar enthalpy change, divide q by the number of moles of the limiting reactant and add a negative sign if the temperature increased.

2717 J = 2.717 kJ. Moles of HCl = 0.050 mol, so ΔHneut = −2.717 ÷ 0.050 = −54.3 kJ mol⁻¹.

Always give the final answer to the correct number of significant figures and include the sign and units. A negative sign shows an exothermic reaction.

7. Hess's Law |

Hess's law states that the total enthalpy change for a reaction is independent of the route taken, provided the initial and final conditions are the same. This follows directly from the fact that enthalpy is a state function.

This law allows you to calculate an unknown enthalpy change by combining known enthalpy changes in a cycle. The most common cycles use standard enthalpies of formation or standard enthalpies of combustion.

Using formation data, the enthalpy change of reaction is given by: ΔHᵣ⦵ = ΣΔHf⦵(products) − ΣΔHf⦵(reactants). Each value is multiplied by the coefficient in the balanced equation.

Using combustion data, the equation is reversed: ΔHᵣ⦵ = ΣΔHc⦵(reactants) − ΣΔHc⦵(products), because combustion burns both reactants and products down to oxides.

8. Enthalpy of Formation and Combustion in Cycles |

In a formation cycle, elements are placed at the bottom, the reactants and products above them, and arrows point upwards from elements to the compounds. The sum of the upward arrow for the product side equals the sum of the upward arrow for the reactant side plus ΔHᵣ⦵.

d arrows point downwards to common combustion products such as CO₂ and H₂O. This gives ΔHᵣ⦵ = ΣΔHc⦵(reactants) − ΣΔHc⦵(products).

Keep state symbols and balancing numbers the same in every species when building these cycles. A missing state symbol or an unbalanced equation is a very common source of mistakes.

9. Bond Enthalpies | 键焓

Bond enthalpy is the energy required to break one mole of a covalent bond in gaseous molecules to form gaseous atoms. Breaking bonds is an endothermic process, so bond breaking has a positive enthalpy value.

nge of a reaction can therefore be estimated using ΔH = Σ(bonds broken) − Σ(bonds formed).

Mean bond enthalpy is the average energy needed to break a particular bond in a range of gaseous compounds. It is an average value, not the exact value found in any one molecule.

10. Mean Bond Enthalpy Calculations |

To estimate an enthalpy change, write the balanced equation and identify every bond broken in the reactants and every bond formed in the products. Multiply each mean bond enthalpy by the number of that bond type.

=O = 2 × 803 = 1606 kJ mol⁻¹, and 4 × O−H = 4 × 463 = 1852 kJ mol⁻¹, giving 3458 kJ mol⁻¹.

示例:CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O。断裂的键:4 × C−H = 4 × 412 = 1648 kJ mol⁻¹,2 × O=O = 2 × 496 = 992 kJ mol⁻¹,总计 2640 kJ mol⁻¹。形成的键:2 × C=O = 2 × 803 = 1606 kJ mol⁻¹,4 × O−H = 4 × 463 = 1852 kJ mol⁻¹,总计 3458 kJ mol⁻¹。

slightly less exothermic than the experimental value of −890 kJ mol⁻¹ because mean bond enthalpies are averaged over many compounds, not measured for methane alone.

ΔH = 2640 − 3458 = −818 kJ mol⁻¹。

11. Errors and Improvements in Calorimetry |

The main experimental errors in calorimetry include heat loss to the surroundings, incomplete combustion, evaporation of water or fuel, and the heat capacity of the calorimeter being ignored. Each of these makes the measured ΔT smaller or less reliable.

Improvements include using a lid and draught shield, insulating the cup, stirring continuously, using a digital thermometer or data logger, and recording temperature at regular time intervals to extrapolate the maximum temperature rise.

For combustion experiments, burning the fuel in a spirit burner beneath a copper calorimeter leads to large heat losses. A bomb calorimeter reduces these losses by burning the fuel in a sealed, pressurised oxygen atmosphere.

12. Exam Technique and Common Pitfalls |

Definitions must be precise: state one mole, state standard conditions where required, and include state symbols in equations. For standard enthalpy of formation, the product must be one mole of a compound formed from its elements.

Always include the sign of ΔH. A negative sign is lost when students only write the magnitude of q. Also remember that experimental ΔH values are often less negative than data book values because of heat loss.

In bond enthalpy questions, ensure all species are in the gaseous state. If liquid water is a product, you would also need the enthalpy of vaporisation to make the calculation strictly correct.

Finally, check units throughout: q is often calculated in joules but ΔH is required in kJ mol⁻¹, so convert by dividing by 1000 before dividing by moles.
