📚 Optical Isomerism |
Optical isomerism is a type of stereoisomerism that occurs when molecules have the same structural formula but differ in the way their atoms are arranged in three-dimensional space. Unlike geometric isomers, optical isomers have identical physical and chemical properties in most environments, but they differ in their interaction with plane-polarised light and with other chiral systems. This topic is central to AQA A-level Chemistry and underpins important ideas in organic synthesis and pharmaceutical chemistry.
1. What is Optical Isomerism? |
Optical isomerism is a form of stereoisomerism. Stereoisomers have the same molecular formula and the same structural formula, but a different spatial arrangement of atoms.
In optical isomerism, the two isomers are mirror images of each other but cannot be superimposed. This is similar to the relationship between your left and right hands.
The key feature is that the molecule and its mirror image are not identical; they are described as non-superimposable mirror images.
2. Chirality and Chiral Centres |
A molecule that has a non-superimposable mirror image is said to be chiral. The word chiral comes from the Greek word for hand, reflecting the handedness of these molecules.
In organic chemistry, chirality usually arises when a carbon atom is bonded to four different atoms or groups. This carbon atom is called a chiral centre, an asymmetric carbon, or a stereocentre.
For example, in 2-hydroxypropanoic acid, CH₃CH(OH)COOH, the second carbon atom is bonded to H, CH₃, OH and COOH, so it is a chiral centre.
A molecule is not chiral simply because it contains a chiral centre; but for AQA, if a molecule has one chiral centre and no internal plane of symmetry, it will exist as a pair of optical isomers.
3. Identifying Chiral Centres |
To identify a chiral centre, look for a carbon atom with four single bonds to four different groups. Double or triple bonds cannot make a carbon chiral in the same way because they do not provide four separate groups.
It is helpful to draw the displayed formula and circle the candidate carbon. Then compare the four groups directly attached to it, not groups further along the chain.
Example: in butan-2-ol, CH₃CH(OH)CH₂CH₃, the second carbon is attached to CH₃, H, OH and CH₂CH₃. These four groups are different, so C2 is a chiral centre.
In butan-1-ol, CH₃CH₂CH₂CH₂OH, the carbon attached to the OH group is bonded to two H atoms, so it is not a chiral centre.
4. Enantiomers: Non-superimposable Mirror Images |
The two optical isomers of a chiral molecule are called enantiomers. They are mirror images of each
