📚 Using the Reactivity Series: Extracting Metals from Their Ores |
Metals are essential materials, but most do not appear in the ground as shiny, pure elements. Instead, they are chemically locked inside rocks called ores. To obtain iron, aluminium, copper and other useful metals, we must choose an extraction method. The reactivity series is the key tool that tells us which method to use and why.
1. Metals from the Ground |
Most metals in Earth's crust exist as compounds, not as free elements. Only very unreactive metals such as gold are sometimes found as pure metal.
A metal compound found naturally in rock is usually an oxide or a sulfide. We call a rock an ore if it contains enough metal compound to make mining and extraction profitable.
2. What Is an Ore? |
An ore is a naturally occurring rock that contains a useful amount of a metal compound. For example, haematite is an iron ore containing iron(III) oxide, Fe₂O₃.
Ores are non-renewable resources. Removing the metal usually involves chemical change, not just physical separation.
3. The Reactivity Series |
The reactivity series ranks metals from most reactive to least reactive. A common KS3 order is: potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, lead, copper, silver, gold.
More reactive metals form more stable compounds. This means their compounds are harder to break apart during extraction.
4. Why Reactivity Controls Extraction |
The more reactive a metal is, the more strongly it holds on to oxygen or other elements. Therefore, extracting a very reactive metal requires a more powerful method.
Less reactive metals need less energy or no chemical reaction at all. This pattern explains the three main extraction routes used at KS3.
5. Native Metals: No Extraction Needed |
Gold and sometimes silver and copper occur as native metals. They are so unreactive that they do not readily form compounds in nature.
Native metals can be separated from rock by physical methods such as panning for gold. No chemical reaction is needed.
6. Heating Alone: Decomposition of Unstable Oxides |
Some metal compounds near the bottom of the reactivity series are unstable when heated. Silver oxide, for example, breaks down into silver and oxygen simply by heating.
2Ag₂O → 4Ag + O₂
This works only for very unreactive metals. More reactive metals have oxides that are too stable to decompose by heat alone.
7. Reduction with Carbon |
For metals in the middle of the reactivity series, such as zinc, iron, lead and copper, we can extract them by heating their oxides with carbon. Carbon is more reactive than these metals, so it takes the oxygen away.
This reaction is called reduction because the metal oxide loses oxygen. The carbon is oxidised to carbon dioxide.
2CuO + C → 2Cu + CO₂
8. Carbon's Position in the Series |
Carbon is not a metal, but it is placed in the reactivity series between aluminium and zinc. This helps us predict which metal oxides carbon can reduce.
Carbon can reduce oxides of zinc, iron, lead and copper because they are less reactive than carbon. It cannot reduce oxides of aluminium, magnesium, sodium, calcium or potassium.
This rule is a key exam idea: carbon is the reducing agent only for metals below it in the series.
9. Electrolysis of Molten Compounds |
Very reactive metals, such as aluminium, magnesium, sodium, calcium and potassium, form extremely stable compounds. Carbon cannot remove oxygen from their oxides.
These metals are extracted by electrolysis. The metal compound is melted, and an electric current passes through it. The metal ions are reduced to metal atoms at the negative electrode.
Electrolysis is powerful but expensive because it uses large amounts of electricity. This is why extracting aluminium costs more than extracting iron.
2Al₂O₃ → 4Al + 3O₂
