1. Physical vs Chemical Changes |
A physical change alters the form or state of a substance but does not produce a new substance. The particles themselves remain unchanged; only their arrangement or energy changes. Melting ice, boiling water, and dissolving sugar in water are typical examples. Physical changes are usually easy to reverse: you can freeze water back into ice. No change in mass occurs, and the chemical properties stay the same. In a chemical change, however, one or more new substances are formed. Bonds between atoms are broken and made, resulting in products with properties different from the reactants. Signs of a chemical change include a colour change, a gas given off, a precipitate forming, or an energy change (temperature rise or fall). Burning fuels, rusting iron, and cooking an egg are chemical changes. Most chemical changes are difficult or impossible to reverse by simple physical means. The total mass is conserved, but the composition is altered.
2. Elements, Compounds and Mixtures |
An element is a pure substance made of only one type of atom. It cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions. Examples include oxygen (O₂), iron (Fe), and sodium (Na). A compound is a pure substance composed of two or more different elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion by mass. The properties of a compound are entirely different from those of its constituent elements. Water (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and sodium chloride (NaCl) are compounds. Compounds can only be separated into elements by chemical reactions. A mixture consists of two or more substances (elements or compounds) that are not chemically combined and can be present in any proportion. Each substance in a mixture keeps its own properties. Air, seawater, and sand with iron filings are mixtures. Mixtures can be separated by physical techniques such as filtration, distillation, or chromatography.
3. Ionic vs Covalent Bonding |
Ionic bonding occurs between metals and non-metals. Metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions (cations), while non-metal atoms gain electrons to form negative ions (anions). The oppositely charged ions attract each other strongly, forming a giant ionic lattice. Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points because a lot of energy is needed to overcome the strong electrostatic forces. They conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in water, as the ions become free to move, but not when solid. Covalent bonding happens between non-metal atoms. The atoms share pairs of electrons to achieve a full outer shell. Simple molecular substances, such as water and carbon dioxide, have strong covalent bonds inside the molecules but weak intermolecular forces between molecules. This means they have low melting and boiling points and do not conduct electricity. Giant covalent structures, like diamond and silicon dioxide, have atoms linked by covalent bonds throughout the whole structure, giving them very high melting points and hardness.
4. Exothermic vs Endothermic Reactions |
nd alkalis, and the reaction of magnesium with acid are all exothermic. Hand warmers and self-heating cans use exothermic reactions. An endothermic reaction absorbs thermal energy from the surroundings, making the surroundings cooler. The products have more energy than the reactants, and ΔH is positive. Examples include the thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂) and photosynthesis. Some sports injury packs use endothermic reactions to produce a cooling effect. Bond breaking is endothermic; bond making is exothermic. The overall energy change of a reaction is the balance between the energy taken in to break bonds and the energy given out when new bonds form.
5. Acids vs Bases |
tals to give salt and hydrogen gas, with metal carbonates to give salt, water and carbon dioxide, and with bases to form salt and water only. A base is any substance that neutralises an acid to form a salt and water. An alkali is a soluble base that releases hydroxide ions, OH⁻, in water. Alkalis have a pH greater than 7 and feel soapy; they turn red litmus blue. Common alkalis include sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), and aqueous ammonia. The reaction between an acid and an alkali is called neutralisation: H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l).
6. Oxidation vs Reduction |
trons to become Mg²⁺; they are oxidised. Oxygen molecules gain electrons to form oxide ions, O²⁻; they are reduced. An oxidising agent accepts electrons and gets reduced; a reducing agent donates electrons and gets oxidised. Oxidation can also be described as the gain of oxygen or the loss of hydrogen. Reduction can be described as the loss of oxygen or the gain of hydrogen. In terms of oxidation numbers, oxidation is an increase in oxidation number, while reduction is a decrease in oxidation number. Redox reactions always involve both processes happening together.
7. Diamond vs Graphite |
Both diamond and graphite are giant covalent structures made only of carbon atoms, but their arrangements give them vastly different properties. In diamond, each carbon atom forms four strong covalent bonds in a tetrahedral arrangement, creating a rigid three-dimensional network. This makes diamond extremely hard, with a very high melting point, and it does not conduct electricity because all outer-shell electrons are localised in bonds. Diamond is used in cutting tools and jewellery. In graphite, each carbon atom bonds to only three others, forming flat layers of hexagonal rings. The fourth outer-shell electron of each atom is delocalised and can move freely between the layers, allowing graphite to conduct electricity. The layers are held together by weak forces, so they can slide over each other, making graphite soft and slippery. Graphite is used as an electrode, as a lubricant, and in pencil 'lead'. Both allotropes have high melting points due to the strong covalent bonds within the structures.
8. Complete vs Incomplete Combustion |
mbustion happens when the oxygen supply is limited. The fuel is not fully oxidised, so the products may include carbon monoxide (CO) and/or carbon (soot) alongside water. Carbon monoxide is a toxic, colourless, odourless gas that reduces the blood' nes must be well ventilated to ensure complete combustion, both for efficiency and safety.
9. Metallic vs Non-metallic Properties |
Metals, found on the left and centre of the Periodic Table, are good conductors of heat and electricity, have high melting and boiling points (except mercury), and are malleable and ductile. They tend to lose electrons to form positive ions in reactions. Metal oxides are typically basic, reacting with acids to form salts and water. Non-metals, located on the right of the Table, are generally poor conductors (graphite is a notable exception), have lower melting and boiling points, and are brittle when solid. They tend to gain electrons to form negative ions or share electrons in covalent compounds. Non-metal oxides are often acidic, reacting with alkalis to form salts and water, or they can be neutral. The metallic character decreases across a period and increases down a group, leading to the typical 'staircase' dividing line between metals and non-metals. Elements near this line, such as silicon, often show properties of both and are called metalloids.
10. Soluble vs Insoluble Salts |
When preparing salts, knowing which salts dissolve in water is essential. All sodium, potassium and ammonium salts are soluble. All nitrates are soluble. Most chlorides are soluble — silver chloride and lead(II) chloride are the key insoluble exceptions. Most sulfates are soluble, but barium sulfate, lead(II) sulfate and calcium sulfate (slightly soluble) are insoluble. Carbonates are generally insoluble except those of sodium, potassium and ammonium. Hydroxides of sodium, potassium and ammonium are soluble, but most other metal hydroxides are insoluble. Soluble salts can be prepared by titration (e.g., reacting an acid with an alkali) or by reacting an acid with a soluble metal carbonate. Insoluble salts are prepared by precipitation: two aqueous solutions containing the appropriate ions are mixed, and the insoluble salt forms as a precipitate, which can be filtered, washed and dried. The choice of preparation method depends entirely on the solubility of the target salt.
