This article covers the key concepts required for the Edexcel IGCSE Science syllabus.
1. Introduction to Energy Resources |
An energy resource is anything that can be used to produce useful energy, such as heat, light or electricity. Most of the energy we use on Earth comes directly or indirectly from the Sun, except for nuclear, geothermal and tidal sources. Resources are split into two main groups: non‑renewable (finite) and renewable (can be replenished). Choosing the right mix of energy sources involves balancing cost, reliability, environmental effects and future availability.
2. Non‑renewable Energy Resources |
Non‑renewable resources exist in fixed amounts and will eventually run out. They include fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and nuclear fuels (uranium and plutonium). These resources are used extensively because they are energy‑dense and provide a reliable, continuous supply of electricity. However, burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide and other pollutants, while nuclear power produces radioactive waste that must be stored safely for thousands of years.
3. Fossil Fuels: Coal, Oil and Natural Gas |
Fossil fuels were formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals over millions of years. Coal is burned in thermal power stations to heat water, producing steam that drives a turbine connected to a generator. Oil and natural gas are also burned, though natural gas is often used in gas‑fired power stations and for domestic heating. Combustion of fossil fuels generates large amounts of carbon dioxide, contributing to the enhanced greenhouse effect and climate change. In addition, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides cause acid rain, and particulate matter affects respiratory health.
4. Nuclear Power | 核能
Nuclear power stations use the heat released from nuclear fission to generate electricity. In fission, large unstable atomic nuclei (such as uranium‑235) split into smaller nuclei, releasing a vast amount of energy. The heat is used to create steam that spins a turbine and generator. Unlike fossil fuel plants, nuclear stations do not emit carbon dioxide during operation. However, the radioactive waste they produce remains hazardous for thousands of years, and accidents such as those at Chernobyl and Fukushima have raised serious safety concerns. Decommissioning old reactors is also very expensive.
5. Renewable Energy Resources |
Renewable energy resources are those that can be replenished at a rate comparable to or faster than they are used. They include solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, wave, geothermal and biomass. These sources are increasingly important for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and moving towards a sustainable energy future. However, many renewables are intermittent – they depend on weather conditions or seasonal changes – and may require large areas of land or coast. Energy storage systems such as batteries or pumped storage are often needed to match supply with demand.
6. Solar Energy |
Solar energy is captured using photovoltaic (PV) cells or solar thermal systems. PV cells convert sunlight directly into electricity, while solar thermal systems use mirrors to concentrate sunlight, heating a fluid that can drive a turbine. The Sun provides a virtually unlimited supply of energy, and small‑scale solar panels can be installed on homes in remote areas. However, solar power is only available during daylight hours, and output varies with cloud cover and latitude. Manufacturing PV cells also requires energy and involves some toxic materials.
7. Wind Energy | 风能
Wind turbines convert the kinetic energy of moving air into electricity. The wind turns the blades, which spin a generator inside the nacelle. Wind farms can be located onshore or offshore, with offshore winds generally being stronger and more consistent. Wind power produces no air pollution or carbon dioxide during operation. On the downside, wind speed is unpredictable, so turbines do not always generate at full capacity. Some people object to wind farms because of their visual impact on landscapes and the noise they produce. There are also concerns about birds and bats colliding with blades.
8. Hydroelectric Power |
Hydroelectric power stations use the gravitational potential energy of water stored in reservoirs. Water is released through turbines, converting potential energy into kinetic energy and then into electricity via a generator. Large‑scale hydroelectric dams can provide a reliable and rapidly adjustable supply of electricity, which is valuable for meeting peak demand. Pumped storage systems even allow water to be pumped back to the upper reservoir during off‑peak times. However, building dams floods large areas, destroying habitats and displacing communities. The decay of submerged vegetation can also release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
9. Tidal and Wave Energy |
Tidal power harnesses the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun. Tidal barrages trap water at high tide and release it through turbines at low tide, while tidal stream generators work like underwater wind turbines. Wave energy devices capture the movement of surface waves, often using oscillating floats or columns of air. These resources are predictable because tides follow astronomical cycles, and waves are driven by prevailing winds. The major challenges are high construction costs, potential harm to marine ecosystems, and the corrosive nature of seawater.
10. Geothermal Energy | 地热能
Geothermal energy taps into the heat stored beneath the Earth's surface. In regions with volcanic activity or hot rocks, water is pumped down to absorb heat and returns as steam, which can directly drive turbines. Even in less active areas, ground‑source heat pumps can be used for domestic heating. Geothermal power stations provide a constant, reliable base‑load supply and release very few greenhouse gases. The main limitations are that suitable sites are geographically restricted, and drilling deep wells is costly. There is also a small risk of triggering minor earthquakes.
11. Biomass Energy |
Biomass is organic material from plants and animals, such as wood, crop residues and animal dung. It can be burned directly to produce heat or fermented to produce biofuels like ethanol and biogas. Biomass is often considered renewable because plants can be regrown, and it is carbon‑neutral over its life cycle – the CO₂ released when it is burned is roughly equal to the CO₂ absorbed during plant growth. Nevertheless, burning biomass still emits particulates and other pollutants. Large‑scale biofuel production can also compete with food crops for land and water resources, leading to deforestation and rising food prices.
12. Electricity Generation and the National Grid |
In a thermal power station (fossil fuel, nuclear or biomass), heat boils water to produce high‑pressure steam, which spins a turbine connected to an electrical generator. Renewable sources such as wind, hydroelectric and tidal use the direct motion of air or water to turn the turbine. The electricity generated is then stepped up to high voltages by a step‑up transformer for efficient transmission over long distances via the National Grid. Before reaching consumers, step‑down transformers reduce the voltage to safer levels. The National Grid ensures a stable supply by balancing demand with output from many different power stations.
