1. Introduction to Acids and Bases |
Acids are substances that release hydrogen ions (H⁺) when dissolved in water. Common examples include hydrochloric acid (HCl), sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) and nitric acid (HNO₃). Bases are substances that can neutralise acids to form salts and water. Metal oxides and metal hydroxides are typical bases. An alkali is a soluble base that releases hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
2. The pH Scale | pH值等级
The pH scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. It ranges from 0 to 14. A pH less than 7 indicates an acidic solution (lower pH means higher H⁺ concentration). A pH of 7 is neutral (pure water). A pH greater than 7 indicates an alkaline solution. Universal indicator or pH meters can be used to measure pH.
3. Reactions of Acids |
r + carbon dioxide. These reactions are characteristic and allow identification of acids and production of salts.
SO₄(aq) → ZnSO₄(aq) + H₂(g). The hydrogen gas can be tested with a lit splint, producing a 'pop' sound.
4. Neutralisation and Salt Formation |
lkali to form water: H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l). The remaining ions form the salt. The salt' drochloric acid gives chlorides, sulfuric acid gives sulfates, nitric acid gives nitrates.
5. Making Soluble Salts |
Soluble salts can be prepared by reacting an acid with a suitable insoluble base, metal or carbonate. A common method is to add excess solid (e.g. copper(II) oxide) to warm dilute acid until no more reacts, filter off the excess, and then crystallise the salt by evaporating the water. This produces pure dry crystals of the soluble salt.
SO₄(aq) + H₂O(l). The blue copper(II) sulfate solution is filtered and evaporated to obtain blue crystals.
反应式为:CuO(s) + H₂SO₄(aq) → CuSO₄(aq) + H₂O(l)。
6. Making Insoluble Salts |
and sodium sulfate: BaCl₂(aq) + Na₂SO₄(aq) → BaSO₄(s) + 2NaCl(aq). The white precipitate is barium sulfate.
To choose the correct reagents, one must know the solubility rules. All sodium, potassium and ammonium salts are soluble, all nitrates are soluble, most chlorides are soluble (except silver and lead chlorides), most sulfates are soluble (except barium, lead and calcium sulfates), and most carbonates and hydroxides are insoluble unless they are from Group 1 or ammonium.
7. Bases and Alkalis |
Bases are substances that neutralise acids. All metal oxides and metal hydroxides are bases. Copper(II) oxide, iron(III) oxide and magnesium hydroxide are bases. Alkalis are a subset of bases that dissolve in water to produce OH⁻ ions. Common alkalis include sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂), although calcium hydroxide is only slightly soluble. Alkalis feel soapy and turn red litmus blue.
8. Indicators |
Indicators are substances that change colour depending on the pH of the solution. Litmus is red in acidic solutions and blue in alkaline solutions. Universal indicator gives a range of colours from red (strong acid) to green (neutral) to purple (strong alkali). Methyl orange turns red in acid and yellow in alkali. Phenolphthalein is colourless in acid and pink in alkali. Choosing the correct indicator is essential for titrations.
9. Acid-Base Titrations |
Titration is a quantitative technique used to determine the concentration of an acid or an alkali. A known volume of one solution is measured with a pipette, and the other solution is added from a burette until the end-point is reached, shown by an indicator colour change. The volume used is recorded to calculate the concentration using the mole concept and the balanced equation.
For a strong acid – ion calculation often uses the formula: moles of solute = concentration × volume (in dm³).
10. Everyday Examples and Uses |
Acids and alkalis are widely used. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach aids digestion. Citric acid is found in citrus fruits. Vinegar contains ethanoic acid. Alkalis like sodium hydroxide are used in soap making and drain cleaners. Calcium hydroxide is used in agriculture to neutralise acidic soils. Ammonium salts are used as fertilisers, produced by reacting ammonia with acids.
11. Strong and Weak Acids |
A strong acid completely ionises in water, giving a high concentration of H⁺ ions. Examples: HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃. A weak acid partially ionises, so at the same concentration it has a lower concentration of H⁺ ions and a higher pH than a strong acid. Examples: ethanoic acid (CH₃COOH), carbonic acid (H₂CO₃). This concept explains differences in reactivity and electrical conductivity.
例子:HCl,H₂SO₄,HNO₃。
12. Summary and Key Points |
To excel in this topic, students must memorise the general equations, solubility rules, and the preparation methods for salts. Practical skills such as filtration, crystallisation, and titration are also assessed. Regular practice of balancing and writing ionic equations is recommended.
