📚 Electromagnetic Induction |
Electromagnetic induction is the process by which a changing magnetic field can generate an electromotive force (e.m.f.) in a conductor. Discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831, this principle is the foundation of most electrical power generation today, from massive power station alternators to the tiny sensors in our smartphones. Understanding induction is essential for IGCSE Edexcel Science because it connects the topics of magnetism and electricity, and explains how we convert kinetic energy into electrical energy on a large scale.
1. Introduction to Electromagnetic Induction |
When a magnet is moved into a coil of wire connected to a sensitive ammeter, the meter pointer deflects briefly. This shows that a current has been induced in the circuit. The current only flows as long as the magnet and coil are moving relative to each other; if the magnet stops, the current ceases. The effect is called electromagnetic induction, and the voltage produced is known as an induced e.m.f.
There are two ways to create the necessary changing magnetic field: either move a conductor through a fixed magnetic field, or keep the conductor still and change the magnetic field around it. In a generator, for example, a coil is spun inside a magnetic field. In a transformer, an alternating current in one coil creates a fluctuating magnetic field that cuts through a second coil, inducing a voltage.
2. Faraday's Law of Induction |
Faraday's law states that the magnitude of the induced e.m.f. in a circuit is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkage through the circuit. In simpler terms, the faster the magnetic field changes (or the faster the conductor moves through the field), the larger the induced voltage. Flux linkage depends on the magnetic flux density (B), the area of the coil (A), and the number of turns (N).
Δt, where ΔΦ/Δt is the rate of change of magnetic flux. The negative sign represents Lenz' enough to understand that a larger number of turns and a swifter change in flux both increase the induced voltage.
3. Lenz's Law and Conservation of Energy |
Lenz's law tells us the direction of the induced current: the induced current always flows in a direction that opposes the change that caused it. If you push a north pole into a coil, the end of the coil facing the magnet will become a north pole to repel it. This resistance is why you have to do work to push the magnet in—mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy. The law is a consequence of conservation of energy.
If the induced current aided the change, the magnet would be pulled in faster, creating even more current, and energy would appear from nowhere. This would violate the principle of conservation of energy. Lenz's law ensures that electrical energy is always produced at the expense of some other form of energy, usually kinetic.
4. Factors Affecting Induced e.m.f. |
The size of an induced e.m.f. can be increased in several practical ways. Moving the magnet or conductor faster increases the rate of change of flux. Using a stronger magnet increases the magnetic flux density. Coiling the wire into more turns (N) multiplies the flux linkage. For a rotating generator, spinning the coil faster and using a core of soft iron to concentrate the magnetic field both boost the output.
| Factor | 因素 | How it increases e.m.f.
|---|---|
| Speed of relative motion | 相对运动速度 | Faster cutting of flux lines → larger ΔΦ/Δt |
| Magnetic field strength | 磁场强度 | Higher flux density (B) → more flux changed per second |
| Number of turns (N) | 线圈匝数 | Each turn contributes to total flux linkage |
| Core material | 铁芯材料 | Soft iron concentrates field, increases flux through coil |
5. The Simple Alternator (AC Generator) |
An alternator converts mechanical energy into alternating current. It consists of a rectangular coil of wire that is rotated between the poles of a permanent magnet. As the coil turns, slip rings and brushes maintain electrical contact without tangling the wires. The induced e.m.f. varies sinusoidally, producing an alternating current that changes direction every half rotation.
When the coil plane is parallel to the magnetic field, the sides cut flux lines at the maximum rate, so the induced e.m.f. is greatest. When the plane is perpendicular to the field, the sides move momentarily along the field lines (no cutting takes place), and the e.m.f. is zero. The result is an alternating output that can be displayed as a sine wave on an oscilloscope.
6. The DC Dynamo |
A DC dynamo is similar to an alternator but uses a split-ring commutator instead of slip rings. The commutator reverses the coil's connection to the external circuit every half turn, so that the current flowing out of the generator always flows in the same direction. The output is a direct current, though it pulsates slightly.
Unlike a smooth DC supply from a battery, the dynamo output rises and falls as the coil rotates, giving a rectified sine wave when viewed on an oscilloscope. Dynamos are used in applications where a steady DC is not essential, such as bicycle generators (dynamos) that light the headlamp.
7. Using an Oscilloscope to Display Output |
An oscilloscope (or CRO) is an instrument that shows how voltage varies with time. For an alternator, the trace is a smooth sine wave, with a peak voltage (amplitude) and a period. Increasing the speed of rotation makes the wave more frequent (shorter period) and also increases the amplitude because the flux is cut faster.
Reversing the direction of rotation simply inverts the wave (it starts going negative instead of positive). Using a stronger magnet or adding more turns both increase the amplitude without changing the frequency. These observations provide experimental evidence for Faraday's and Lenz's laws.
8. Transformers: Structure and Principle |
A transformer is a device that changes the voltage of an alternating current. It consists of two separate coils, the primary and the secondary, wound on a common laminated soft-iron core. An AC in the primary coil produces a changing magnetic field in the core, which links with the secondary coil and induces an alternating e.m.f. across it. There is no electrical connection between the two coils; the energy is transferred by the magnetic field.
The core is laminated—made of thin sheets of iron insulated from each other—to reduce eddy currents. Eddy currents are tiny circulating flows induced in the core itself, and they would cause energy loss as heat. The soft iron is easily magnetised and demagnetised, making the energy transfer efficient.
9. Transformer Equation and Calculations |
For an ideal transformer (100% efficiency), the voltage ratio equals the turns ratio:
Vₚ / Vₛ = Nₚ / Nₛ
Where Vₚ and Vₛ are the primary and secondary voltages, and Nₚ and Nₛ are the number of turns on the primary and secondary coils. A step-up transformer has more turns on the secondary (Nₛ > Nₚ), so Vₛ > Vₚ. A step-down transformer has fewer secondary turns.
Because power input is almost equal to power output, we also have:
Vₚ Iₚ = Vₛ Iₛ (assuming 100% efficiency)
So if the voltage is stepped up, the current is stepped down by the same factor, and vice versa. In real transformers, a small amount of power is lost as heat in the coils and core, so efficiency is usually between 95% and 99%.
10. Power Transmission and Efficiency |
ost as heat in the transmission cables (P = I²R). Near the end user, step-down transformers reduce the voltage to safe levels such as 230 V for homes.
Every time the voltage is transformed, a small percentage of power is lost. This is why the electricity grid uses AC rather than DC: AC voltages can be easily and efficiently changed using transformers. Direct current cannot be transformed directly, which is one reason why AC won the 'war of currents' in the late 19th century.
11. Applications of Electromagnetic Induction |
Beyond power generation and transformers, electromagnetic induction is used in a wide range of everyday devices. Induction cooktops use a coil to produce a high-frequency magnetic field that induces eddy currents directly in the base of a pan, heating it rapidly. Wireless charging pads for smartphones and electric toothbrushes work on the same principle—an alternating magnetic field in the pad induces a current in a coil inside the device.
Metal detectors use a transmitter coil to generate a changing magnetic field; when a metal object is brought nearby, it alters the field, which is detected by a receiver coil. Microphones and loudspeakers also rely on electromagnetic induction to convert sound into electrical signals and vice versa. In hospitals, magnetic induction is used in functional MRI scanners to map brain activity.
12. Summary and Exam Tips |
Electromagnetic induction occurs whenever there is relative motion between a conductor and a magnetic field, or when the magnetic field around a fixed conductor is changing. Faraday's law quantifies the effect, and Lenz's law gives the direction. AC generators (alternators) use slip rings; DC dynamos use split-ring commutators. Transformers rely on mutual induction to change voltages.
Exam tips: Always link the magnitude of induced e.m.f. to rate of flux cutting, not just movement. When explaining transformer operation, emphasise that an AC supply is essential. In energy and power questions, remember the inverse relationship between voltage and current in an ideal transformer, and show your working step by step. Drawing a labelled diagram of an alternator or transformer can help gain full marks.
