1. Introduction to Energy |
Energy is defined as the capacity to do work. The SI unit of energy is the joule (J). One joule is the work done when a force of one newton moves an object one metre in the direction of the force.
The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred, stored or dissipated. In any process, the total energy of a closed system remains constant.
2. Different Forms of Energy |
Energy exists in many forms. Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. Gravitational potential energy is energy stored in an object due to its height above the ground. Elastic potential energy is stored in stretched or compressed objects like springs.
Chemical energy is stored in fuels, food and batteries. Nuclear energy is stored in the nucleus of atoms. Thermal energy relates to the temperature of an object, and electrical energy is carried by moving charges. Light and sound are also forms of energy that can be transferred by radiation.
3. Energy Transfers and Transformations |
Energy can be transferred from one store to another by four main pathways: mechanically (by a force doing work), electrically (by an electric current), by heating (due to temperature difference) and by radiation (such as light or sound waves). In any process, no energy is lost; it is only converted into different forms.
For example, when a lamp is switched on, electrical energy is transferred to the lamp. This energy is then converted into light (useful) and thermal energy (waste). The total energy before and after remains the same.
4. Work, Force and Distance |
W = F × d
Work is done when a force causes an object to move. The amount of work done is calculated by multiplying the force (in newtons, N) by the distance moved (in metres, m) in the direction of the force. Work is measured in joules.
If the force and displacement are perpendicular, no work is done. For instance, carrying a bag horizontally at constant speed does no work against gravity, because there is no vertical displacement.
5. Power: Rate of Energy Transfer |
P = E / t
watts (W), where 1 W = 1 J/s. A higher power means more energy is transferred per second.
For example, a 60 W light bulb transfers 60 J of electrical energy into light and heat each second. A 2 kW kettle transfers 2000 J per second, so it heats water faster than the bulb.
6. Efficiency and Waste Energy |
Efficiency = (Useful output energy / Total input energy) × 100%
In any energy transfer, some energy is always transferred to less useful stores, typically as thermal energy. Efficiency indicates the proportion of input energy that is converted into useful output energy.
Efficiency has no unit; it is expressed as a percentage. An efficiency of 100% is impossible due to energy dissipation. Reducing friction, using lubrication, or insulating devices can increase efficiency.
7. Non-renewable Energy Resources |
Non-renewable energy resources are finite and will eventually run out. The main non-renewable sources used for electricity generation and transport are fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) and nuclear fuels (uranium, plutonium).
| Resource 资源 | How it works 工作原理 | Advantages 优点 | Disadvantages 缺点 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coal, oil, gas 煤、石油、天然气 | Burned to heat water → steam turns turbine → generator 燃烧加热水 → 蒸汽推动涡轮 → 发电机 | Reliable; high energy density; established infrastructure 可靠;能量密度高;基础设施完善 | Release CO₂ and SO₂; non-renewable; finite supply 释放CO₂和SO₂;不可再生;储量有限 |
| Nuclear 核能 | Nuclear fission → heat → steam → turbine 核裂变 → 热 → 蒸汽 → 涡轮 | No CO₂ emissions; very high energy output from small fuel mass 无CO₂排放;少量燃料提供极高能量 | Radioactive waste; risk of accident; high decommissioning cost 放射性废物;事故风险;退役成本高 |
Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide, contributing to the enhanced greenhouse effect. Sulphur dioxide causes acid rain. Nuclear power stations do not emit these gases, but produce radioactive waste that must be stored safely for thousands of years.
8. Renewable Energy Resources |
Renewable energy resources can be replenished naturally in a relatively short time. They generally produce much lower greenhouse gas emissions during operation. The table below summarises key renewable sources.
|---|---|---|---|
| Wind 风能 | Wind turns blades → turbine → generator 风驱动叶片 → 涡轮 → 发电机 | Renewable; no emissions during operation 可再生;运行中无排放 | Intermittent; visual/noise impact; hazard to birds 间歇性;视觉/噪音影响;对鸟类有危害 |
| Solar 太阳能 | Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight to electricity 光伏电池将阳光转化为电能 | Free energy; low running costs 免费能源;运行成本低 | Depends on weather and daylight; high installation cost 受天气和日照影响;安装成本高 |
| Hydroelectric 水力发电 | Water from reservoir flows through turbine 水库的水流经涡轮 | Reliable (if large reservoir); no fuel cost 可靠(若有大型水库);无燃料成本 | Habitat flooding; displacement of people; expensive to build 淹没栖息地;人口迁移;建设成本高 |
