📚 Energy Resources and Energy Transfers |
Energy is a fundamental concept in science that allows us to describe changes, do work and power our daily lives. In IGCSE Edexcel Science, understanding how energy is stored, transferred and conserved helps you analyse everything from a bouncing ball to global electricity generation. This article explores forms of energy, heat transfer mechanisms, efficiency calculations and both renewable and non‑renewable resources.
1. Forms of Energy |
Energy exists in many different forms, all measured in joules (J). The main forms include kinetic energy (movement), gravitational potential energy (height in a gravitational field), thermal energy (heat), chemical energy (stored in bonds of fuels and food), electrical energy (flow of charge), light energy (visible radiation), sound energy (vibrations) and nuclear energy (stored in atomic nuclei). In an IGCSE exam you are expected to identify which forms are present at different stages of a process.
For example, a lifted brick stores gravitational potential energy. When it falls, this transfers to kinetic energy. On impact, the kinetic energy changes mostly into thermal and sound energy. Recognising energy changes like this is a core skill for the Energy transfers topic.
2. Energy Transfers and Transformations |
Energy can be transferred from one store to another or transformed from one form to another. The IGCSE Edexcel specification often uses the idea of energy stores and pathways. The main stores are kinetic, thermal, chemical, gravitational potential, elastic potential, electrostatic, magnetic and nuclear. Energy moves between these stores via four pathways: mechanical work, electrical work, heating and radiation. When you lift a book, you do mechanical work, transferring energy from your chemical store to the book's gravitational potential store.
In all transfers, energy is neither created nor destroyed – the total energy remains constant. This is the law of conservation of energy. However, some energy always ends up in less useful thermal stores, which is why we talk about efficiency and energy dissipation.
3. Conservation of Energy |
The principle of conservation of energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred from one store to another or transformed within a system. For a closed system (no external forces or energy inputs), the total energy before an event equals the total energy after. This allows scientists and engineers to predict outcomes, such as the speed of a roller coaster at the bottom of a slope.
no air resistance. You may be asked to use these equations in exam calculations; always check whether friction or drag is considered negligible.
4. Efficiency | 效率
Efficiency describes how much of the total energy input is converted into useful output. In any practical device, some energy is always dissipated to the thermal store of the surroundings. Efficiency is calculated as:
Efficiency = (Useful energy output ÷ Total energy input) × 100%
rical energy into 720 J of thermal energy in the room has an efficiency of (720/800) × 100% = 90%. The remaining 10% can also be expressed as a decimal (0.9) but the percentage form is most common in IGCSE.
No device can be 100% efficient. Even LED lighting, which is much more efficient than filament bulbs, still produces some heat. Sankey diagrams are often used to represent energy transfers and show clearly the useful and wasted portions.
5. Thermal Energy Transfer: Conduction |
Heat always flows from regions of higher temperature to regions of lower temperature. Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a material without any visible movement of the material itself. It occurs mainly in solids, where vibrating particles pass energy to neighbouring particles. Metals are excellent conductors because they have free electrons that can diffuse rapidly through the lattice, carrying kinetic energy. Materials such as wood, plastic and glass are poor conductors (insulators) because they lack these free electrons and their particles are less able to transfer vibration energy.
In an experiment to compare conduction, rods of different materials can be coated with wax, heated at one end and observed for how quickly the wax melts along the rod. The rate of conduction depends on the material, the cross‑sectional area and the temperature difference.
6. Convection | 对流
Convection is the transfer of heat through fluids (liquids and gases) by the movement of the fluid itself. When a fluid is heated, it expands, becomes less dense and rises. Cooler, denser fluid sinks to take its place, creating a convection current. This process is responsible for many natural phenomena, such as sea breezes, and for heating systems like radiators in a room.
Convection cannot occur in solids because particles are fixed in place. In IGCSE questions, you may need to explain why a heater at floor level warms a whole room – hot air rises from the heater, spreads across the ceiling, cools, sinks at the far side and returns to the heater.
7. Radiation | 辐射
All objects emit and absorb infrared radiation, a type of electromagnetic wave. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium; it can travel through a vacuum. This is how the Sun's energy reaches the Earth across space. The amount of radiation emitted depends on the temperature of the surface – hotter objects emit more radiation. Dark, matt surfaces are better emitters and absorbers of infrared radiation than light, shiny surfaces. Shiny, light‑coloured surfaces are good reflectors and poor absorbers.
Practical applications include using shiny foil behind radiators to reflect heat back into the room, painting outdoor storage tanks white to minimise absorption of solar radiation, and wearing light‑coloured clothing in hot weather to stay cooler.
8. Energy Resources: Non‑renewable |
Non‑renewable energy resources exist in limited amounts and will eventual run out. They include fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and nuclear fuels (uranium and plutonium). Fossil fuels are burned in power stations to release chemical energy, which heats water to produce steam that drives a turbine connected to a generator. Nuclear fuels undergo fission, releasing huge amounts of thermal energy to drive the same process. Both types can generate electricity reliably, but they have significant environmental costs.
Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) and sulfur dioxide (which causes acid rain). Nuclear power does not produce CO₂ during operation, but it creates radioactive waste that must be stored safely for many years. Evaluation of energy resources in the exam often asks you to weigh availability, environmental impact, cost and reliability.
9. Energy Resources: Renewable |
Renewable energy resources are replenished on a human timescale and will not run out if used sustainably. Examples include solar, wind, tidal, wave, hydroelectric, geothermal and biomass energy. These resources typically have lower operational carbon emissions, but they depend on natural conditions; some are intermittent (wind, solar) and can have high initial construction costs. However, they are increasingly important in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and achieving energy security.
Hydroelectric power relies on water stored behind a dam flowing through turbines. Geothermal power uses heat from deep underground. Wind turbines convert kinetic energy of moving air into electricity. Solar cells convert light energy directly into electrical energy. In your IGCSE exam, you may need to describe the energy transfers for each scheme and discuss advantages and disadvantages.
10. Sankey Diagrams and Energy Analysis |
Sankey diagrams are visual tools that represent energy transfers using arrows of varying widths. The width of each arrow is proportional to the amount of energy. A typical diagram shows the total input energy branching into useful output and wasted energy. Sankey diagrams make it easy to compare efficiency and see where the major losses occur, usually as heat transferred to the surroundings.
Constructing and interpreting Sankey diagrams is a common IGCSE task. You might be given data and asked to draw arrows to scale or to calculate the efficiency from the widths. For example, in a filament lamp, only about 10% of electrical energy is converted into light; the remainder becomes infrared and thermal energy, shown as a wide downward‑angled arrow.
11. Work and Power |
ured in joules (J) when force is in newtons (N) and distance in metres (m). If you lift a 20 N weight through 2 m, you do 40 J of work. Doing work always involves an energy transfer from one store to another.
00 J of electrical energy in 5 s has a power of 20 W. These equations are essential for linking energy, work and time in numerical problems.
12. Practical Skills for Energy Investigations |
In IGCSE Edexcel Science, you are expected to carry out investigations and analyse data related to energy. Typical experiments include measuring the efficiency of a solar cell, investigating the cooling rate of a liquid under different surface colours, comparing the insulating properties of materials or determining the energy content of a food sample by burning it and measuring the temperature rise of water. In all these activities, controlling variables (e.g. initial temperature, volume of water, distance from heat source) is vital to produce valid results.
m is mass (kg), c is specific heat capacity (J/(kg °C)) and Δθ is temperature change. This equation links thermal energy to measurable quantities and is often assessed in the context of improving accuracy, repeats, and identifying anomalies.
