📚 Food Chains, Food Webs and Energy Pyramids |

In every ecosystem, energy flows from one organism to another through feeding relationships. Understanding how this energy is transferred and why it diminishes at each step is fundamental to IGCSE Edexcel Science. This article explores the structures that ecologists use to describe these transfers: food chains, food webs, and the three types of ecological pyramids.

1. Introduction to Ecosystems |

An ecosystem consists of all the living organisms (the community) interacting with each other and with the non‑living (abiotic) components of their environment. Sunlight is the primary source of energy for nearly all ecosystems on Earth. Plants and other photosynthetic organisms capture a small fraction of this solar energy and convert it into chemical energy stored in organic molecules.

2. Producers, Consumers and Decomposers |

Producers (autotrophs) are organisms that make their own food using energy from sunlight or chemical reactions. On land, green plants are the dominant producers; in aquatic ecosystems, algae and phytoplankton fulfil this role. Consumers (heterotrophs) cannot make their own food and must eat other organisms. Primary consumers feed directly on producers, secondary consumers eat primary consumers, and tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers. Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down dead organic matter and waste, returning vital nutrients to the soil for producers to use again.

3. Food Chains: Linear Energy Transfer |

rection of energy transfer with arrows. For example: grass → rabbit → fox. The arrow means 'is eaten by' nstruct a food chain from a list of organisms or to identify the trophic levels within it.

4. Food Webs: Interconnected Chains |

A food web is a network of many interconnected food chains. Most organisms eat more than one type of food and are eaten by more than one predator. This makes the feeding relationships in an ecosystem complex and more stable, because if one species declines, predators can switch to alternative prey. When drawing or interpreting a food web, you should be able to identify all possible food chains, predators, prey, and the trophic level of each organism.

5. Trophic Levels | 营养级

A trophic level is the position an organism occupies in a food chain. Trophic level 1 is always occupied by producers. Primary consumers occupy trophic level 2, secondary consumers level 3, tertiary consumers level 4, and so on. Decomposers are sometimes considered separately because they obtain energy from dead matter at all trophic levels. The number of trophic levels in a chain is usually limited to four or five because of the energy losses between levels.

6. Pyramids of Numbers |

A pyramid of numbers shows the number of organisms at each trophic level in a food chain. The width of each bar is proportional to the count of individuals. Often, the pyramid is broad at the base (many producers) and narrows towards the top (few top predators). However, pyramids of numbers can be distorted. A single oak tree (producer) may support thousands of insects (primary consumers), resulting in a pyramid that appears inverted. Therefore, pyramids of numbers do not always give a reliable picture of energy flow.

7. Pyramids of Biomass |

Pyramids of biomass represent the total dry mass of living material at each trophic level, usually measured in grams per square metre (g/m²). Because mass is a more direct measure of the chemical energy stored in organisms, biomass pyramids almost always have a traditional pyramid shape, with a broad producer base and progressively smaller higher levels. An exception occurs in some aquatic ecosystems where phytoplankton reproduce rapidly and have a small standing biomass at any one moment, yet support a larger biomass of zooplankton. However, if averaged over a year, the pyramid still takes the expected shape.

8. Pyramids of Energy |

Pyramids of energy show the total energy transferred to each trophic level over a period, usually expressed in kilojoules per square metre per year (kJ/m²/yr). Because energy transfer is always accompanied by losses (as heat, respiration, movement and uneaten material), the pyramid of energy is always upright and each level is smaller than the one below. Energy pyramids provide the most accurate representation of energy flow and are never inverted.

9. Efficiency of Energy Transfer |

Not all the energy taken in by a consumer is converted into new body tissue. A large proportion is lost through respiration, movement, heat and excretion. The efficiency of energy transfer between two trophic levels can be calculated using the formula:

Efficiency (% rporated into biomass of next level ÷ Energy available in biomass of previous level) × 100

In most food chains, efficiency ranges from about 5% to 20%. This low efficiency explains why food chains rarely have more than five trophic levels and why top predators are relatively rare.

10. Energy Losses and the 10% Rule |

A rule of thumb in ecology states that only about 10% of the energy at one trophic level is transferred to the next. The remainder is lost in several ways:

This 10% approximation helps explain the shape of energy pyramids and the limited length of food chains. When you encounter data in an IGCSE exam, you may be asked to calculate the percentage of energy transferred and account for the losses.

11. Impact on Ecosystem Structure |

Because energy decreases sharply at successive trophic levels, there is a corresponding decrease in the biomass and number of organisms that can be supported. This influences the structure of ecological communities: producers are typically abundant and form the broad base; herbivores are less numerous; carnivores are even fewer. The loss of energy at each step also means that farming animals for meat is less efficient in terms of energy than growing crops directly for human consumption. In IGCSE Edexcel Science, you should be able to interpret this in relation to food security and sustainable food production.

12. Human Impact and Sustainability |

Human activities such as deforestation, overfishing and pollution can disrupt food chains and webs, reducing biodiversity and altering energy flow. Understanding pyramids of energy and biomass helps us make informed decisions about conservation and resource management. For example, sustainable fishing policies set quotas to prevent the collapse of marine food webs, and encouraging plant‑based diets can increase the efficiency of energy transfer from producers to humans, feeding more people with less environmental impact.
