📚 Solids, Liquids and Gases | 固体、液体和气体
Everything around us is made of matter, and matter normally exists in one of three states: solid, liquid or gas. In IGCSE Edexcel Science, understanding how these states behave – and how they can change from one to another – connects particle theory with measurable properties such as density, pressure, specific heat capacity and latent heat. This article covers the key ideas you need for your exams, with careful explanations and worked examples where appropriate.
我们周围的一切都是由物质构成的,而物质通常以固体、液体或气体这三种状态之一存在。在IGCSE Edexcel科学中,理解这些状态的行为以及它们如何互相转化,能将粒子理论与密度、压强、比热容和潜热等可测量的性质联系起来。本文涵盖考试所需的核心概念,并配有详细解释和适当的计算示例。
1. The Particle Model of Matter | 物质的粒子模型
The particle (kinetic) model describes how all matter consists of tiny particles that are constantly moving. In solids, particles are closely packed in a regular arrangement, held together by strong forces; they can only vibrate about fixed positions. In liquids, particles are still close but arranged randomly and can slide past one another, giving the liquid a fixed volume but no fixed shape. In gases, particles are far apart, move rapidly in all directions, and have negligible forces between them, so gases have no fixed shape or volume and are easily compressed.
粒子(运动)模型描述了所有物质都由不断运动的微小粒子组成。在固体中,粒子紧密有序排列,彼此间作用力强,只能围绕固定位置振动。在液体中,粒子仍然接近但排列无序,能够相互滑动,因此液体有固定的体积却没有固定的形状。在气体中,粒子相隔很远,向各个方向快速运动,粒子间作用力几乎为零,因此气体没有固定的形状和体积,且容易被压缩。
| Property | Solid | Liquid | Gas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Particle arrangement | Regular, close-packed | Random, close | Random, far apart |
| Particle motion | Vibrate about fixed points | Slide past each other | Fast, random, in all directions |
| Shape and volume | Fixed shape, fixed volume | Takes shape of container, fixed volume | Fills container, no fixed volume |
| Compressibility | Very difficult | Very difficult | Easy |
| Density | Usually high | Medium to high | Low |
The table above summarises the contrasting properties of solids, liquids and gases in terms of the particle model. Understanding these differences helps explain phenomena such as why a solid iron block keeps its shape while water takes the shape of a glass and air spreads to fill a room.
上表根据粒子模型总结了固体、液体和气体的性质对比。理解这些差异有助于解释各种现象,例如铁块能保持自身形状,而水随容器成形,空气则会扩散充满整个房间。
2. Density and the Equation | 密度与计算公式
Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance. It is a property that depends on both the mass of the particles and how closely packed they are. The equation used is:
密度是物质单位体积的质量,它取决于粒子的质量及其排列的紧密程度。所用公式为:
ρ = m / V
where ρ (rho) is density in kg/m³, m is mass in kg, and V is volume in m³. In the lab, you can determine the density of a regular solid by measuring its mass on a balance and its volume with a ruler and calculation; for an irregular solid, use a displacement method (Eureka can) to find volume. The density of a liquid can be found by measuring the mass of a fixed volume using a measuring cylinder.
其中 ρ 为密度(单位 kg/m³),m 为质量(kg),V 为体积(m³)。在实验室中,对于规则固体可以用天平测质量并用尺子计算体积;对于不规则固体则用排水法(溢流杯)测体积。液体的密度可通过量筒量取固定体积并称重来求得。
onvert units: 1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³. So the density of water (1.0 g/cm³) equals 1000 kg/m³.
IGCSE常见的考题要求进行单位换算:1 g/cm³ = 1000 kg/m³,因此水的密度(1.0 g/cm³)等于1000 kg/m³。
3. Pressure in Fluids | 流体中的压强
Pressure is the force acting per unit area. Liquids and gases are both fluids and can exert pressure on surfaces. The pressure at a point in a liquid is given by:
压强是单位面积上所受的力。液体和气体都是流体,都能对表面施加压强。液体中某一点的压强由下式给出:
p = hρg
where p is the pressure in pascals (Pa), h is the depth of liquid in metres, ρ is the density of the liquid, and g is the gravitational field strength (approximately 10 N/kg on Earth). This tells us that pressure increases with depth and with liquid density.
其中 p 为压强(单位帕斯卡 Pa),h 为液体深度(m),ρ 为液体密度,g 为重力场强度(地球上约 10 N/kg)。这表明压强随深度和液体密度的增大而增大。
In gases, pressure is caused by particles colliding with the walls of their container. Increasing the temperature or decreasing the volume increases the frequency and force of collisions, raising the pressure. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is about 101 000 Pa.
在气体中,压强是由粒子撞击容器壁产生的。升高温度或减小体积会增加碰撞频率和强度,从而使压强升高。海平面的大气压强约为 101 000 Pa。
4. Changes of State: Melting and Boiling | 状态变化:熔化和沸腾
Matter can change state when energy is transferred to or from it. Melting is the change from solid to liquid at the melting point, and boiling (or vaporisation) is the change from liquid to gas at the boiling point. During these processes, the temperature of the substance stays constant even though heating continues: the energy is used to overcome the attractive forces between particles rather than to raise the kinetic energy. This constant-temperature region is seen as a horizontal line on a heating graph.
物质吸收或释放能量时可以改变状态。熔化是在熔点时由固态变为液态,沸腾(即汽化)是在沸点时由液态变为气态。在这些过程中,尽管持续加热,但物质的温度保持不变:能量被用来克服粒子间的吸引力,而不是增加动能。这一恒温阶段在加热曲线上表现为水平线段。
The reverse processes – freezing (or solidification) and condensation – release energy to the surroundings. The melting point and boiling point are physical properties that can be used to identify pure substances. Impurities lower the melting point and raise the boiling point.
相反的过程——凝固(结冰)和冷凝——会向周围环境释放能量。熔点和沸点是可用于鉴别纯物质的物理性质。杂质会降低熔点并升高沸点。
5. Evaporation and Condensation | 蒸发与冷凝
Evaporation is different from boiling: it occurs at any temperature, only at the surface of a liquid, and causes cooling. Particles with the highest kinetic energy escape from the surface, so the average kinetic energy of the remaining particles drops – hence the liquid cools down. Factors that increase the rate of evaporation include higher temperature, larger surface area, and draught (moving air).
蒸发不同于沸腾:它可在任何温度下发生,仅限于液体表面,并导致冷却。动能最高的粒子从表面逃逸,因此剩余粒子的平均动能下降,液体温度随之降低。使蒸发速度加快的因素包括较高温度、较大表面积和通风(空气流动)。
Condensation occurs when gas particles lose kinetic energy, usually by contact with a cold surface, and come together to form a liquid. An increase in pressure also encourages condensation by bringing particles closer together. Cloud formation and morning dew are everyday examples of condensation.
当气体粒子失去动能(通常因接触冷表面)并聚集形成液体时,就会发生冷凝。增加压强使粒子更靠近,也会促进冷凝。云的形成和清晨的露水就是冷凝在日常生活中的实例。
6. The Gas Laws: Boyle's Law | 气体定律:玻意耳定律
For a fixed mass of gas at constant temperature, the pressure p is inversely proportional to the volume V. This is Boyle’s Law, and it can be written as:
对于一定质量气体,在温度不变的条件下,压强 p 与体积 V 成反比。这就是玻意耳定律,可表示为:
pV = constant
or
p₁V₁ = p₂V₂
If you plot p against 1/V or pV against p, you get a straight line, confirming the relationship. This law explains why a sealed syringe becomes harder to push the more you compress the gas: decreasing volume increases the rate of collisions with the walls, raising pressure.
如果绘制 p 与 1/V 的关系图,或 pV 与 p 的关系图,会得到一条直线,由此验证该关系。该定律解释了为什么推动密封注射器时,压缩得越厉害就越难推动:体积减小,气体粒子撞击壁面的频率增加,压强升高。
n kelvin for any gas law involving temperature. The kelvin scale starts at absolute zero (–273°C), and to convert: T(K) = θ(°C) + 273.
要记住,在涉及温度的气体定律中,温度必须使用开尔文温标。开尔文温标以绝对零度(–273°C)为起点,换算关系为:T(K) = θ(°C) + 273。
7. Pressure–Temperature Relationship (Gay-Lussac's Law) | 压强–温度关系(盖–吕萨克定律)
For a fixed mass of gas at constant volume, the pressure p is directly proportional to the absolute temperature T (in kelvin). This is often summarised as:
对于一定质量气体,在体积不变的条件下,压强 p 与绝对温度 T(单位开尔文)成正比。通常概括为:
p / T = constant
That means if you heat a sealed aerosol can, the pressure inside rises, which could be dangerous. A graph of pressure against temperature in kelvin is a straight line through the origin.
这意味着如果加热密封的气雾罐,内部压强会上升,可能造成危险。压强对开尔文温度的关系图是一条通过原点的直线。
The pressure law and Boyle' cel Science you only need to handle the separate laws qualitatively and with simple calculations.
压强定律和玻意耳定律可结合为理想气体状态方程 pV = nRT,不过在IGCSE Edexcel科学中,只需定性地掌握并会用各定律做简单计算即可。
8. Specific Heat Capacity | 比热容
When you heat a substance, its temperature rise depends on its mass, the energy supplied, and its specific heat capacity (c). Specific heat capacity is the energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 kg of the material by 1°C. The equation is:
加热物质时,其温升取决于质量、提供的能量以及物质的比热容(c)。比热容是指使 1 kg 材料温度升高 1°C 所需的能量。公式为:
E = m c Δθ
where E is energy in joules (J), m is mass in kg, c is specific heat capacity in J/(kg °C), and Δθ is the temperature change in °C.
其中 E 为能量(J),m 为质量(kg),c 为比热容(J/(kg °C)),Δθ 为温度变化量(°C)。
For example, water has a high specific heat capacity (4200 J/(kg °C)), meaning it takes a lot of energy to warm up and it cools down slowly. This is why water is used in car radiators and why the sea moderates coastal climates.
例如,水的比热容很高(4200 J/(kg °C)),意味着需要大量能量才能使其升温,且凉得也慢。这就是汽车水箱用水冷却、海洋调节沿海气候的原因。
9. Specific Latent Heat | 比潜热
When a substance changes state, energy is transferred without a change in temperature. The energy required for a change of state per kilogram is called specific latent heat (L). There are two types:
物质发生状态变化时,会传递能量而温度保持不变。每千克物质发生状态变化所需的能量称为比潜热(L)。有两种类型:
- Specific latent heat of fusion – energy to change 1 kg from solid to liquid at melting point.
- 熔化比潜热 – 在熔点使 1 kg 物质由固变液所需的能量。
- Specific latent heat of vaporisation – energy to change 1 kg from liquid to gas at boiling point.
- 汽化比潜热 – 在沸点使 1 kg 物质由液变气所需的能量。
The equation is:
公式为:
E = m L
where E is the energy transferred, m is the mass, and L is the specific latent heat in J/kg. Latent heat values are usually much larger than specific heat capacities, which explains why boiling a pan of dry water away takes far longer than simply heating the water to 100°C.
其中 E 为传递的能量,m 为质量,L 为比潜热(J/kg)。潜热值通常远大于比热容,这也解释了为何把一壶水烧干所需的时间远大于单纯将水加热到 100°C 的时间。
10. Brownian Motion and Evidence for Kinetic Theory | 布朗运动与分子运动论的证据
Brownian motion is the random, erratic movement of microscopic particles (such as pollen grains or smoke particles) when suspended in a fluid. This movement is caused by collisions with invisible, fast-moving molecules of the fluid. Observing Brownian motion provides evidence that fluids consist of tiny particles in constant, random motion – the central assumption of kinetic theory.
布朗运动是指悬浮在流体中的微观粒子(如花粉粒或烟雾颗粒)所作的无规则运动。这种运动来自于与不可见的、快速运动的流体分子之间的碰撞。观察布朗运动为流体由不断做无规则运动的大量微小粒子组成这一假设提供了证据,这正是分子运动论的核心。
Diffusion – the spreading of particles from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration – also supports kinetic theory. Diffusion occurs fastest in gases, slower in liquids, and is negligible in solids because of the restricted particle movement.
扩散——粒子从高浓度区域向低浓度区域的散布——同样支持分子运动论。气体中扩散最快,液体中较慢,固体中因粒子运动受限而几乎不发生。
11. Applications and Context | 应用与相关情境
Knowing how solids, liquids and gases behave helps explain many real-life phenomena and technologies. For instance, the expansion joints in bridges allow solid materials to expand on hot days without causing structural damage. The fact that gases expand significantly when heated is used in hot-air balloons: the heated air inside becomes less dense, creating an upthrust. In refrigeration, the evaporation of a coolant inside the freezer compartment absorbs latent heat, keeping the interior cold.
了解固体、液体和气体的行为有助于解释许多现实生活中的现象和技术。例如,桥梁的伸缩缝允许固体材料在热天膨胀而不损坏结构;气体受热显著膨胀的原理被用在热气球中——热气球内部被加热的空气密度减小,产生上升浮力。在制冷过程中,冷冻室内冷却液蒸发吸收潜热,维持内部低温。
Furthermore, the pressure–temperature law explains why aerosol cans carry a warning not to expose them to high temperatures, and the understanding of latent heat is essential in designing efficient heating and cooling systems, including the steam engines studied historically.
此外,压强–温度定律解释了为何气雾罐上会警示勿置于高温环境;而理解潜热对设计高效加热和冷却系统(包括历史上研究的蒸汽机)至关重要。
