1. Organisation and Cell Specialisation |

Cells are the basic building blocks of all living organisms. In multicellular organisms, cells differentiate to become specialised, gaining features that allow them to perform specific functions. A group of similar cells working together forms a tissue, several tissues make an organ, and organs work together in organ systems.

For example, muscle cells contain many mitochondria to provide energy for contraction. Ciliated epithelial cells have tiny hair-like structures called cilia that move mucus. Red blood cells lack a nucleus to maximise space for haemoglobin, so they can carry more oxygen.

2. Digestive System and Enzymes |

The digestive system breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the blood. Mechanical digestion occurs in the mouth (chewing) and stomach (churning), while chemical digestion uses enzymes.

Key enzymes: amylase breaks down starch into maltose (produced in salivary glands and pancreas); proteases break down proteins into amino acids (pepsin in stomach, trypsin from pancreas); lipases break down lipids into fatty acids and glycerol (pancreas). Bile, produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, emulsifies fats to increase surface area for lipase action and neutralises stomach acid.

Absorption occurs mainly in the small intestine: the inner wall is covered with villi (and microvilli) that provide a large surface area. Villi have a dense capillary network and a lacteal for absorbing digested fats. Food molecules pass into the blood by diffusion and active transport.

3. Circulatory System: Heart and Blood Vessels |

The human circulatory system is a double system: the right side pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs (pulmonary circulation), while the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body (systemic circulation). This separation maintains high pressure for efficient delivery of oxygen and nutrients.

The heart has four chambers: right atrium and ventricle, left atrium and ventricle. Valves prevent backflow of blood. The pacemaker (sinoatrial node) in the right atrium controls the heartbeat rhythm by sending electrical signals.

Three main types of blood vessels: arteries carry blood away from the heart at high pressure – they have thick, muscular and elastic walls; veins return blood to the heart at lower pressure – they have thinner walls and valves; capillaries are tiny, thin-walled vessels (one cell thick) that allow exchange of substances with tissues.

4. Blood Composition and Functions |

Blood is a tissue composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Plasma (about 55% of blood volume) transports dissolved substances such as glucose, amino acids, carbon dioxide, urea, hormones, and heat.

Red blood cells (erythrocytes) contain haemoglobin, which binds oxygen in the lungs and releases it in tissues. Their biconcave disc shape increases surface area for gas exchange, and the absence of a nucleus allows more haemoglobin to be packed in. White blood cells (leukocytes) are part of the immune system: lymphocytes produce antibodies, and phagocytes engulf pathogens. Platelets are cell fragments involved in blood clotting.

5. Respiratory System and Gas Exchange |

The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide. Air enters through the nose or mouth, passes through the trachea (windpipe), bronchi, bronchioles, and finally reaches the alveoli – tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs.

Adaptations of the alveoli for efficient gas exchange: very large total surface area, thin walls (one cell thick), surrounded by a dense network of capillaries, and a moist lining for dissolving gases. Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the blood, and carbon dioxide diffuses from the blood into the alveoli, following concentration gradients.

Ventilation involves the intercostal muscles and diaphragm. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens, and the external intercostal muscles contract, lifting the ribcage up and out. This increases the volume of the thorax and decreases pressure, drawing air in. Exhalation is largely passive when at rest, but during exercise the internal intercostal muscles and abdominal muscles help force air out.

6. Nervous System and Reflexes |

The nervous system detects changes (stimuli) and coordinates responses. The central nervous system (CNS) consists of the brain and spinal cord. Sensory neurones carry impulses from receptors to the CNS, and motor neurones carry impulses from the CNS to effectors (muscles or glands).

Neurones are adapted to carry electrical impulses quickly: they have long axons, insulating myelin sheaths (in many neurones), and dendrites to connect with other neurones. The junction between two neurones is a synapse; impulses are transmitted across it by chemical neurotransmitters that diffuse across the gap.

ector. This protects the body from harm, e.g., quickly withdrawing the hand from a hot object.

7. Hormonal Coordination |

Hormones are chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands, transported in the blood to target organs. Compared with nerve impulses, hormonal effects are slower but longer-lasting. The pituitary gland is often called the 'master gland' because it controls many other glands.

Key endocrine glands and hormones: pancreas releases insulin and glucagon to control blood glucose; adrenal glands release adrenaline in 'fight or flight' situations, increasing heart rate and preparing the body for action; thyroid gland releases thyroxine, which regulates metabolism; ovaries release oestrogen and progesterone; testes release testosterone.

8. Blood Glucose Regulation and Diabetes |

Blood glucose concentration is maintained within narrow limits by the hormones insulin and glucagon. When blood glucose rises (e.g., after a meal), the pancreas releases insulin, which stimulates liver and muscle cells to take up glucose and convert it into glycogen for storage. When blood glucose falls, the pancreas releases glucagon, which stimulates the liver to break glycogen back into glucose and release it into the blood.

Diabetes is a disease where blood glucose control fails. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the pancreas produces little or no insulin; it is treated with insulin injections and careful diet. Type 2 diabetes is lifestyle related, where body cells become resistant to insulin; it is managed by dietary changes, exercise, and medication.

9. Homeostasis and Thermoregulation |

Homeostasis is the maintenance of a stable internal environment, including temperature, water balance, and blood glucose. The skin plays a major role in temperature regulation. When body temperature rises, blood vessels near the skin surface dilate (vasodilation) to increase heat loss by radiation, and sweat glands produce more sweat – evaporation cools the skin. When body temperature falls, vasoconstriction reduces blood flow to the skin to conserve heat, and shivering generates heat through muscle contraction. Body hairs may also stand up (goosebumps) to trap an insulating layer of air, though this has limited effect in humans.

The hypothalamus in the brain monitors blood temperature and coordinates these responses. The removal of urea and excess water by the kidneys also contributes to homeostasis, but thermoregulation is one of the most frequently examined areas.

10. Human Reproduction |

Human reproduction involves the fusion of male and female gametes (sperm and egg) during fertilisation. The male reproductive system produces sperm in the testes; sperm travels through the sperm duct and is mixed with fluids from the prostate gland and seminal vesicles to form semen. The female reproductive system releases an egg from an ovary about every 28 days (ovulation); the egg passes along the fallopian tube where fertilisation can occur, and then implants in the thickened lining of the uterus.

The menstrual cycle is coordinated by hormones: FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinising hormone) from the pituitary gland, and oestrogen and progesterone from the ovaries. These hormones control the maturation and release of an egg and the preparation and maintenance of the uterus lining. The placenta, formed during pregnancy, allows exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste between mother and foetus without mixing their blood.
